The story line set during the Yukon Klondike Gold Rush, at this people are searching for big and strong dogs like Buck. In the Call of Wild Buck goes through a lot of changes. He goes from being a domestic dog who is fed and taken care of to becoming a dog of the wild who has to adapt and learn how to survive.He was so used to being in charge where he was that he expect to be in charge at all time.He soon realizes when he gets to camp that all changes. It started off with Manuel taking Buck and him going willing because he trusted him, but when Manuel sold Buck that trust was lost. The first time Buck started a fight with Spitz he almost died. He had no idea what he was doing because he wasn't used to the wild ways of dog, but he knew if you went down it over. After Fran broke up the fight Buck knew he had to use his instinct and skills next time when fighting Spitz. Buck wanted lead dog, and to be lead dog he had to get rid Spitz. When the final fight between Buck and Spitz happened, Buck knew he had drag Spitz away from camp so it wouldn't get stopped by Fran. It started off with Spitz beating Buck but then that change; Buck knew if he faked going for the neck and took out the legs he could attack more easily, so that’s what he did. Buck lives in Judges Millers estate at the beginning of both the book and the movie. He is then kidnapped by Manuel, the gardener. He is sold to dog salesmen heading to Alaska. He is disciplined by the Law of Club and Fang. The man in the red sweater takes Buck out of the cage and repeatedly beats him. Buck continues to try to attack until he is to week to fight. He then learns the law of Club and Fang.
Buck was determined to kill Spitz. While pursuing that mission, though, he not only risked his life, but the teamwork of the other dogs. “It was to the death,” (London 31). This text shows how Buck risked his life because the fight between him and Spitz was “to the death”. “With the covert mutiny of Buck, a general insubordination sprang up and increased,” (London 28). This text shows how Buck risked his teamwork with the other dogs because Spitz and him were always fighting.
This part shows that Buck has a deep spiritual connection with his ancestor, making him a deeper character; he is not just some random dog who is getting lucky. When Buck met Thornton, he still had a strong connection to the wilderness, but his love and trust for Thornton overrides his primordial instincts so much that he would even die just by Thornton telling him to. In a bar, Thornton gets disrespected, then Buck rips out the rude man’s throat, showing his undying loyalty. As Buck rushed into the clearing, he saw the Yeehat Indians dancing around the chief who was about to kill John and his friends. Buck jumped on the chief and ripped open his throat. As the rest of the Indians scattered into the forest, Buck ran to John Thornton and licks his face. John is more than happy to see him and cries happy tears while hugging and petting Buck. “You are such a good dog. You saved my life! ” After that, they go back to the camp and stay there for a few days. On the fifth day of being at the camp, while john is sleeping, Buck goes off into the woods. He starts running and sees the wolf he was walking with once. They run together for a while, and while they' re running, Buck feels the call of the wild stronger than ever.
Buck watches how other dogs do things, then copies how they do it. He learns to steal food without getting caught, he also learns to dig holes in the snow to stay warm. He knows that once you get knocked off your feet in a fight that you can’t get back up.
He is the first person to teach Buck suffering and the ways of primitive life. In San Diego, Buck has never been ill-treated and is a rather proud dog. When his dignity is wounded by being roughly treated, he acts rashly towards the man in the red sweater, whom he later identifies as the lawgiver. After he tries a few times to launch himself at the man, he is always brought down by the man's club. His first beating helps him in not acting rashly later on when it counted and helps him bring Spitz down by using both his head and his instincts, not just his instincts.
The Call of the Wild, on the surface, is a story about Buck, a four- year old dog that is part Shepherd and part St. Bernard. More importantly, it is a naturalistic tale about the survival of the fittest in nature. Throughout the novel, Buck proves that he is fit and can endure the law of the club, the law of the fang, and the laws of nature.
The Call of The Wild by Jack London is a very naturalistic book based on a dog’s journey through Alaska. The book also follows Buck and his journey of slowly converting back to ativism. As Buck moves from owner to owner he gets pushed to the extremities of his own strength and knowledge. One gets to see how each one of Buck’s owners differ from each other and how Buck’s life differs with each owner. One also gets to see what Buck learns from each owner.

Buck finds out very quickly that life in the wild is not as many people make it out to be. Because of the rough situation in which Buck was placed, the dog has to adapt to the life around him very quickly. In order to survive he must be resourceful, greedy, selfish, confident... ect. Buck was almost forced to follow his call of the wild. It did not take him long to forget his old life with the judge, when he was seemingly happy and content.
After John Thornton dies and Buck’s only tie to humanity and civilization is severed, Buck proceeds to live out his days in a local wolf pack where he becomes the alpha. Here he becomes a legend to the locals and is forevermore known as the Ghost Dog because of ferocious actions presiding Thornton’s death. Throughout the novel, “The Call of the Wild” it is proven that adaptability is key to one’s survival in any harsh environment.
