Darrell Mercer did it! He finally did it! He had beaten Tyray Hobbs, the meanest bully at Bluford High, but he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the eight keys of excellence. Specifically, Failure Leads to success, This is it and Commitment. Throughout the book, The Bully, by Paul Langan, Darrell transformed from the victim team, to the ownership team, and is now a total different person than when he first moved to California six weeks ago.

For instance, Darrell used the key, Failure Leads to success when he joined the wrestling team. At first he could not keep up with the team, but he didn’t give up, kept trying and eventually, could keep up with the rest of the team. He could climb the rope all the way to the top, he could run for twenty minutes without getting a cramp, and he could almost beat Craig and Luis in a mini match. He used this key when he decided to join the wrestling team, and even though it was hard he didn’t give up. He stuck with it and is now a pretty good wrestler. He also used this key when he told Nate that he would protect him from his older brother Travis, but after that Uncle Jason told Darrell not to get involved with his boys. A little while after that, Darrell overheard Travis yelling at Nate, and Darrell went over and saw that Travis had locked Nate inside a trunk! Even though Uncle Jason told Darrell not to get involved with his sons, he saves Nate anyway because he promised Nate he would protect him. When Uncle Jason finds out he is surprisingly not mad, instead he tells Darrell, “I know I told you not to get involved with them, but you did the right thing. A man’s got to stand up when someone else is in trouble even if means he might get himself into trouble.” (page 169 paragraph 2) These examples show the key commitment because he didn’t stop and not do anything, both in wrestling and in with his cousins.
