Can you imagine in today’s society, being told who you had to buy a product or service from regardless of what you thought? We remember learning about the story of The Boston Tea Party in grade school. The Boston Tea Party, was this the act of an angry mob, or was it the action of people defending their rights against Britain’s unfair tea tax? The colonists were told (by the Great Britain Government) they could only buy tea from a particular company that had high taxes. The tea that was loaded on three British ships (Beaver, Eleanor, and Dartmouth) were attacked and emptied of it’s tea cargo into the ocean. The reason for the high tax was to cut the amount of tea surplus the East India Trading Company had (Anderson, Dale., 2006). Tariffs are taxes enforced on the importing of goods and services (McEachern, W. A., 2015). If there is a tax increase on imported goods or services, then producers could increase the price of the good to make up the difference. The Tariff Act of 1789 was signed by President George Washington. This was the first significant Act passed in the United States. The purpose of the Act was meant to protect trade and raise the federal governments revenue and to regulate Commerce with foreign nations (Malloy, M.P., 2004) The disadvantages of having tariffs is that they can increase prices of imported goods, reduces the quality of that particular good or service, and can minimize competition in that particular industry. The advantages of having
You might think that the Boston Tea Party was just some irregular people dumping tea in the sea. But, actually it was a protest about the awful taxes that were put on the British tea. So, a group of patriots called the Sons of Liberty decided to dump the tea into the Boston Harbor. The Sons of Liberty and colonists wanted to prove a point that the taxes were atrocious and the British’s taxes on the tea were stealing their business. They indeed dumped tea into the sea, but the whole point was to protest the British and their taxes. The Sons of Liberty were the people who did the tea dumping process and the tea
The Tea Act was an excellent example of how the British treatment was extremely aggressive. For instance, Britain banned all sale on non-britain tea, which then lead to the colonists getting extremely aggravated. By doing this, the colonists of Boston, Massachusetts rebled by dressings as mohawks, and dumping all tea into the Boston Harbor, which soon would be called, “The Boston Tea Party”.
This made the Colonists look at the Tea Act as another taxation without representation situation. It meant they could not buy tea from anyone else and so their tea would lose
American Tempest: How the Boston Tea Party Sparked A Revolution written by Harlow Giles Unger offers an in-depth analysis of the Boston Tea Party. Unger organizes the events in chronological order starting 30 years before the Boston Tea Party occurred. In the end he touches upon the aftermath of the journey towards self-government. The book presents many engaging details and provides the reader with more of a storytelling feel. He describes the colonists hard times and anger towards being taxed by British Parliament. Unger adds insights and conclusions about various topics and the people surrounding the rebellion, which was one of his goals in his writing. He wanted to tell of the untold Tea Party 's impact on American history politically, socially, and economically. The book was intended for the general public, because he wrote “ironically, few, if any Americans today… know the true and entire story of the Tea Party and the Patriots who staged it” (4).
The history and foundation of America was forged through the blood, sweat, and the tenacity of the colonists in the mid- 1700s. During this time of new hope and perspective, the colonists felt stifled by Britain’s tight hold on their country. They insisted on independence for their colonies and were enraged by their original land’s refusal to acknowledge their rights. Britain ignores the colonists’ natural rights and took advantage of America’s reliance on their finances and support. Britain’s government terrorized the colonists by denying their natural rights and abusing their power, leading to revolutions that would further shape the history of America.
The Boston Tea Party was a tremendous moment in history that was caused by many factors and had many lasting effects that led to the war that shaped our country into what it is today, The Revolutionary War. The Boston Tea Party occurred due to the creation of The Tea Act in 1773. The colonists retaliated by taking tea off of a British boat and throwing it into the harbor. This led to the creation of The Intolerable Acts, and the beginning of The Revolutionary War.
One of the most important events in America's history is the Boston Tea Party. The East India Company had lost a lot of tea that the company couldn’t sell into England, so the British decided to pass the Tea Act of 1773. The act allowed the East India company to sell their tea to the American colonists without any taxes. The American colonists were angry because the act would give the East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies, so the American colonists retaliated by dumping tea into the Boston Harbor. The group of American colonists who dumped the tea were the Sons of Liberty. In 2001, after September 11th, the US Congress passed the Patriot Act to fight off the threat of terrorist attacks in America. According to the
In current day America, citizens either take their freedom lightly or believe they have no freedom at all. However, our ancestors thought differently in the past. The English colonist came to the New World for a number of reasons. Many came to the New World to escape bad marriages, jail terms, but many historian believe that many came to either get out of poverty or the fear of them falling into poverty. According to Brands, “Religion was a big reason for the English to come across the Atlantic”. The first colony was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, which was not successful. After the first colony was established many more were established like New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and etc..
Merriam-Webster defines rebellion as, "open opposition toward a person or group in authority” or “refusal to obey rules or accept normal standards of behavior, dress, etc” (“Rebellion”). Have you ever thought of the numerous accounts of rebellious acts that have been expressed throughout time? Many of these uprisings have been successful and have brought great change in society. There are many examples of this throughout history. The Boston Tea Party painting would most likely spark a feeling of rebellion inside any American who views it. While the main focus is the painting, one cannot fully grasp the extent of powerful emotions that it encases without having prior knowledge about the defiance and its purpose, the details within the
The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that took place on December 16, 1773 in Boston Harbor in Boston, Massachusetts. The Sons of Liberty led by Samuel Adams, dressed as Mohawk Indians destroyed an entire shipment of tea sent from the East India Company by throwing chests full of tea into the Boston Harbor. George Hewe’s, an eyewitness of the event writes in his journal, “In about three hours from the time we went on board, we had thus broken and thrown overboard every tea chest to be found in the ship, while those in the other ships were disposing of the tea in the same way, at the same time.” (Hewes). The Sons of Liberty, a secret group formed by the 13 colonies to protect the rights of the colonists, protested in opposition of the Tea Act implemented on May 10, 1773. The Tea Act was an act placed by the British Parliament in order to raise revenue for Great Britain that required tax on
American history is full of battles and freedom fighters. From the Boston tea party to voting rights. America fought against a king who was unfair and unjust. They may have had a civil war but it was also for the idea that rights were being taken away. The country has many amazing historical characters that made it the country it is today. This paper will discuss the Boston Tea Party, George Washington’s inaugural address, his warnings upon leaving office as well as the Boston Massacre, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and John Adams on voting rights.
When the Boston Tea Party occurred on the evening of December 16,1773, it was the culmination of many years of bad feeling between the British government and her American colonies. The controversy between the two always seemed to hinge on the taxes, which Great Britain required for the upkeep of the American colonies. Starting in 1765, the Stamp Act was intended by Parliament to provide the funds necessary to keep peace between the American settlers and the Native American population. The Stamp Act was loathed by the American colonists and later repealed by parliament.
Although tariffs usually cause domestic prices to increase they can have a positive effect on our economy and specifically our domestic producers of steel and their employees. The US trade policy has historically been protectionist in nature, and congress, the principle body of power for import policy, heavily favored domestic firms over their foreign competitors (Irwin 146). As a result, domestic steel producers have had tariffs and quotas in place for many years. An effective tariff raises revenue for our US government and can help to subsidize domestic production at the expense of foreign producers. This is good because the American government receives money from foreign exporters that it would not have otherwise had access to. This money can then be used in domestic government policies and could
In modern economic policy of nations and states, the tariffs a tool to tax goods and services being imported. The principal desired outcome for this tool is to create security for the domestic industry from the imported product, which may be cheaper for consumers to purchase. (McEachern, 2015)
Of the many causes of the revolutionary war, Seven Years War, Boston Tea Party, and the Olive Branch Petition were the most important. The seven years which was also known as the French and Indian war, began in 1756 when the fighting between the French and colonists joined into a European conflict involving France, Austria, and Russia against Prussia and Britain. The war left with great Britain having territory from North America, but they had a disagreement over a policy and paying the of a war that was led to a colonial discontent, and also to the American revolution. The Boston tea party was an important event for the revolutionary war which made the colonists started the violence in the revolutionary war. For the colonist, it was there the first time to try violence against their own government which led to war by acts which were a series of laws passed by the British in 1770. The British initiated acts after the Boston tea party which caused more anger and leading more to the start of the American revolution in 1775. Now with The Olive Branch, John Dickinson drafted the olive branch petition, which was adopted by the second continental congress on July 5 and submitted to King George on July 8, 1775. It was an attempt to declare the rights of the colonists while maintaining their loyalty to the British crown. The war, it started on July 5, 1775, it was by a letter that was sent by the Second continental congress to King George, which was something showing that it would
