The thought of Death being capable of emotion and speech is not something people normally think about but Zusak made this idea come to life. In Mark Zusak's book, The Book Thief, Zusak tells the story of the protagonist Liesel through the narration of Death. Although Death is a concept most people fear, Zusak made the narrator have more human qualities that makes them seem more empathetic, relatable and sympathetic. The character of Death has human like empathy rather than just being the supernatural being readers would expect. The narrator tries to give their work more positive meaning by collecting stories and the emotions that come from the people he sees within his work. Such as Liesel, the protagonist from this novel. The way that Death communicates with the reader helps them to see many sides of the narrator. Such as their remarks in the beginning of the book, “A small fact: You are going to die....does this worry you?”. They are trying to tell the reader this, so that they aren't frightened later in the novel. Their emotions fluctuate as humans emotions do causing the reader to feel a relation to Death. The sympathetic actions of Death are what make the readers relate and feel as if Death is human more than anything else in the novel. Throughout the book Death feels sorrow for the loved ones of and the people themselves that are taken by him. They see so many people die in such terrible ways and how it effects the people that were around that person. “She was saying goodbye and she didn't even know it.”, is one of the times Death feels sorrow because of the cause and effect of his work. “Even death has a heart.” Death is represented through empathy, relatability and sympathy throughout the novel, making the reader feel as if they are human. Using dialogue and emotion Zusak creates a character out of a feared idea.
