The Big Fix by Brett Forrest tells the story about the efforts of Chris Eaton, the head of security for FIFA, in capturing Wilson Raj Perumal, a soccer match-fixer. In the beginning, the reader is brought to a stadium in Jordan where the Jordan vs. Kuwait game is being held. The narrator describes to the reader swhat match-fixing is. Match-fixing is when a person pays a soccer player to affect the score in a certain way. The person then bets on the score and they win money. Sometimes even referees or coaches are paid off to affect the score. Next, the reader is introduced the Wilson Perumal, who is a fixer born in singapore. Then, the reader is taken to Australia where they meet Chris Eaton, a police officer that will soon be promoted to interpol and then the head of security at FIFA. Then the scene shifts to China where Perumal fixes matches in the Asian leagues. For a while, fixing was earning Perumal a lot of money, but they he found himself in and out of jail. His usual punishment of 5 years. At the end of the book, Chris Eaton was getting closer and closer to catching Perumal in the act of fixing and at the end of the …show more content…
One aspect that I found very annoying was how often he started a new chapter. On average, a chapter would be about 6-8 pages, so it made the book harder to follow because the scene changed so often. The book did not flow well because one minute I would be reader about Perumal and the next I would be learning about a lower level soccer team that has nothing to do with the plot of the story. The author’s plot development was very poor and confusing. Another aspect of Forrest’s writing that I found aggravating was how he added unneeded stories and characters that did not aid the story in moving forward. By doing this, the author made the book less enjoyable so I did not want to keep reading like I do with other books. Reading this book became more of a task rather than a
It allowed me to connect with the author’s thoughts and thoroughly understand the story or novel. Because of this, it caused me to enjoy reading, which I was not particularly fond of before.
The organization and transitions take away from his actual writing. He jumps from one idea to another and it is not clear what the point is at that specific moment. One example of this is when he jumps from masculinity, to a short paragraph about femininity, then abruptly back to the problems with being a male.
Moneyball, the story of a dynamic change agent who rallied a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives to overturn convention and rethink how Major League Baseball (“MLB”) was managed and played. Its really a book about hustlers. Moneyball consecrated the notion that its noble to win inexpensively, but believe its good to stay a cheap baseball club, because of their fat annual revenue-sharing check they get at the end of the year. Michael Lewis wrote an un-organizational confusion, his misunderstanding of baseball, to his constant interruption of financial and statistical talk, that turned interest in the book away from many.
Throughout our country’s history there have been many examples of fraud and scandal. One of the most well-known scandals of our century is the 1919 Chicago White Sox Scandal. The movie “Eight Men Out” shows us what really happened throughout the 1919 baseball season with the Chicago White Sox. The Chicago White Sox were a Major League Baseball organization who was run by their penny-pinching owner, Charles Comiskey. He has been under -paying his players, despite the fact that they were the clear favorite to win the 1919 World Series. As a result, the players decide to come up with a plan to get back at their cheap owner.
The author decided to write the book this way because he wanted to foreshadow you in ways. The way he did this was to make the chapters blend with each other or to mix and make good chapters and a good book. Also the reason why he makes it all blend is because when you write or make a story or book, it doesn't just jump to one event to the next. But the author does the exact opposite.
To start off, some of the chapters were not as interesting to me. When you read an interesting book it tends to move faster, but “Touching Spirit Bear” it moved very slow in my opinion. Another reason that ties onto the first,is when a book moves slower it’s harder to follow along or keep track of what has happened. My last reason is when the chapters ended the left you on the end of your seat and you really wanted to read on.
The Baseball World Series of 1919 involved the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds (Linder, 2010). The Series was an exciting exchange that boiled down to the last game, which was taken by the victorious Cincinnati Reds (Linder, 2010). However, a year later, news broke that the game was rigged by the Chicago White Sox (Linder, 2010). They threw the game in order to receive a large payout, which was never given (Linder, 2010). The eight players involved disgraced the sport and the American public (Linder, 2010). In today’s world of sports, scandals continue to happen. A recent example is the doping scandal of the United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team and, their captain, Lance Armstrong. While the US Postal Service team’s doping does not seem to be connected to the White Sox’s gambling problem, they share many similarities.
The first time I looked at the story I did so only because it was assigned to me as homework. I ultimately found myself reading quickly, and not actively reading in the slightest way. Eventually
Many famous individuals in sports have tried to cheat their way out huge contracts with the help of substances that enhance their abilities. When fans’ trust is being played because of this act of insult to the culture of sports, it should bring shame to the individuals who took part in the accident. Many athletes have been caught and have received punishment, minor punishments, but there shall be more that are willing to try to take the risk. A solution to this matter is to end the individual’s contract ,or just distribute the money to many charities that need the money or to help the community. Have a bingo game with the money that the team is giving to the player. Each time increasing the winning
Money seems to run the world. People need money to buy food, buy shelter, and support families. There are many ways to make money in order to survive, which most commonly involve working a full time job, but also include illegal means and gambling. Gambling seems to be an easy way to make money, but also a high risk… but not if the game is fixed. Despite the lack of prevalent hard evidence proving they fixed the game, the eight White Sox players involved in the 1919 World Series bribery scandal were rightfully banned.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, there were some aspects of it that I did not especially care for. The first of these aspects are the sections that are devoted to showing the reader what errors are commonly made in writing a piece of fiction. Although I do see the value in showing a student such things as the dangers of using excessive
I plan to use this in my research paper to make readers aware of deceitful contracts. This will show why it is important for athletes to be knowledgeable while managing their currency and contracts. I will show
Suddenly the ethics of all baseball players came into question. The scandal led fans to doubt the validity of any baseball game outcome Hugh Fullerton; a prominent sports writer reported, “The most severe blow to the sport was not that these skillful athletes sold their loyal supporters, and accepted bribes from gamblers, but that baseball can be made crooked without detection by outsider” (Berkow).
Players have certain responsibilities and patriotism as well when they are doing these sorts of stuffs. Why some players do that eventually is still a mystery to them. To understand this complex motivation we can look up to the sayings of the former South African captain and late Hansie Cronje who has a life time ban punishment for match fixing. Cronje said, “Sometimes you have to pinch yourself to realize what the position is at the moment. I don't know why I did it. I've asked myself the question so many times over and over again. And it's obviously a mistake that I've made. I cannot find one answer that will give me an answer to that one question.” (Page of shame series: Match fixing and spot fixing taints cricket, October 27, 2012)
Rising corrupt practices among officials responsible for the pooling and drafting of players have been linked to poor selection strategies of players in the draft mechanism. The picks from the first rounds do not necessarily stand for the best players to transform the previously low performed clubs. Infiltration of corrupt arrangements ends up making of erroneous drafts that end up drafting players in the wrong round through player’s statistics that are suspicious and unfair. These players may not meet the levels of the productivity expected by the clubs and dropped from the team in a short time. Some players are caught up in their issues due to their fast rise to fame and fail to balance their career and celebrity. A good number of players picked first in the first rounds have displayed to struggle with prejudice as revealed to exist in the industry and
