The short story, “The Necklace”, written by Guy de Maupassant, displays the the theme of
Everybody wants to be liked and accepted. Appearances are often adopted to please other people especially yourself. These unreliable appearances prove to be the misleading front that masks the reality of situations. Eventually, the falsehood of them leads to negative results. This reality is made clear in Guy de Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace”.
People who are driven by greed end up focusing on what they do not have instead of being grateful for what they do have. This is relevant in the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant because Mathilde Loisel ends up losing everything she owns just because she lets greed drive her decisions and get the best of her. When receiving an invitation to an extravagant ball, she declines because she says she does not have anything nice to wear. In the beginning of the short story she says, “There is nothing more humiliating than looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women.(Maupassant).” The reader sees how she puts value in possessions and what others think of her. After finding a dress and then borrowing a necklace that she thought
The lawyer was depicted by Chekhov as a dynamic character who once allowed greed to dominate his life, despite its obvious destructive tendency. He changed his ways as he experienced the repercussions of greed. “If you mean that seriously,” the lawyer replied, “then I bet I could stay locked up for fifteen years, not five” (960). This use of dialogue showed that the lawyer was willing to give up his youth for money because he thought it was more important. His greed resulted in the waste of his prime years in solitary confinement all for money. The author conveyed through the dialogue between the two characters that the lawyer was just as greedy as the banker; he showed this when the lawyer upped the ante as a response to the banker’s proposition. After years of being locked up all because of a wager the lawyer realized how idiotic he had been. “To show in actual practice how much I despise what you live by, I renounce the two million I once dreamed of, as though of paradise, but for which I feel only contempt now. To forfeit my right to them I shall leave this place five hours before the stipulated time and thus break the agreement” (964).Through the author’s use of characterization and through the thoughts of the lawyer the reader saw how the lawyer changed his entire
In Guy De Maupassant’s “The Necklace” a couple faces the struggles of materialistic envy. Mathilde’s desire for a more lavish and luxurious lifestyle and her husband’s attempt to give that to her bring out emotions that ultimately strengthen their relationship. Believing that she is deserving of a higher social rank, Mathilde refuses to embrace her lesser lifestyle that her husband provides. Her envy for materialism shows great threat to her marriage as well as to her pride. Maupassant’s story explains the desires beyond one’s control, while showing the immense dedication a couple must use to work hard and overcome any possible threat to their lifelong decision of marriage.
Around the world, values are expressed differently. Some people think that life is about the little things that make them happy. Others feel the opposite way and that expenses are the way to live. In Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace”, he develops a character, Madame Loisel, who illustrates her different style of assessments. Madame Loisel, a beautiful woman, lives in a wonderful home with all the necessary supplies needed to live. However, she is very unhappy with her life. She feels she deserves a much more expensive and materialistic life than what she has. After pitying herself for not being the richest of her friends, she goes out and borrows a beautiful necklace from an ally. But as she
Short stories are always very enjoyable to read. They are very concise but mostly have such a deep message resonating throughout the text that the reader is left pondering over an extension of the story to imagine the possible ending if they were novels instead. The works under consideration are meant to be compared because of their unique theme which reflects how two authors can write similar yet distinctive stories in different times. Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant are two such short stories whose themes center around role of gender and marriage with special focus on the female characters. Even though there are similarities, there are also
In "The Necklace" the authors choice of words, or diction, is very well articulated. I enjoyed this story because the narrator, Guy de Maupassant sets us so much suspense with the tone of the story. Madame Louisel essentailly loses a valuable item, or so she thought, and goes to major extents and even life-deminishing problems to just make it seem like she was not responsible enough to take care of a necklace for a night.
“The people had done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions” (Jackson). How will two authors contemplate two stories that include miserable sacrifices? The short stories “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson will provide response when exploring through the pages. Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850. At an early age his parents got divorced which lead him to grow a closer relationship with his mother and a family friend Gustave Flaubert.
We can see many themes in this short story. Examples are cleverness, competition, lies and dishonesty.
In The Necklace many events occurred. Many may have occurred because Madame Loisel attitude and honesty. Mathilde Loisel is the type of women who believes she deserves more and all the riches she could possibly get. What if her situation could have changed if she was honest? Honesty is one of the most important characteristics a person can, have and will change your whole life.
I jogged into my house gasping for air. Everyday i run, each day i run more than the day before or until my legs won't move anymore. As i pasted by the mirror i noticed how drenched my vibrant pink shirt is. Patches here and there that turned from a bright pink to a dull dark color. I look up and see my little silver necklace, i've had it since i was 7 years-old. The necklace has a really weird and odd shape but at least it isn't as weirdly shaped as the others that i've seen before. Here and there i'll see people with necklaces that are alike with one another, for example my parents. Multiple times i have asked my parents what it means. This is how the conversation basically goes, i'll start off with “Mum what does this necklace mean?”
At first glance, Chopin’s Story of an Hour (1894) and de Maupassant’s The Necklace (1884), appear to have very little in common. Chopin’s story, as displayed in its title is quite short; while in comparison, de Maupassant tells a much more detailed account of the beleaguered Loisel’s, who must learn from the self-centred Madam Loisel. With de Maupassant’s depiction of his female protagonist as selfish and ungrateful; it is difficult to fathom Chopin, known for her active role in describing woman's oppression in the nineteenth century. Interestingly, Chopin, a realist, did consider de Maupassant to
Have you ever seen a person who is pretty and charming, but is, as if a mistake of destiny, is born in a poor family? Well, this is a lot like the main character in the story called “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, where Mathilde, a daughter and wife of a clerk, cares about her social status and what people think of her. This is shown in many ways. She cares about her looks, how she is, compared to others of her rank, and lies/pretends about little things so she isn’t seen badly.
