“Martha, a student at the University of South Carolina was paralyzed when a gang member fired his gun as she and her friends were waiting for a taxi.” Martha was minding her business when she was shot. If there had been more strict gun laws the gun probably wouldn’t have been in the gang member’s possession and Martha wouldn’t have been shot. The laws for carrying guns are very lenient in the United States. There would be less deaths and shootings if guns were not sold illegally. Although guns are beneficial in some ways, there would be less mass shootings, murders, and other violence if there were stricter gun laws. Everyday innocent people are injured or even worse, they lose their lives because of gun violence. There needs to be a change made to ensure the safety of others. …show more content…
First, according to Atkins, five people were shot at Randallstown High School while attending a basketball game. Many people are getting hurt because of guns getting into the wrong hands. Also, two teens shot and killed twelve students and a teacher, and injured twenty-three others. Kids are not safe when it comes to them attending school. “Michell Johnson, thirteen, and Andrew Golden, eleven, fired at students and teachers at Westside Middle School. Four students” (56). Then, many people fear for their safety in school. When kids go to school, they should feel safe. Kids usually get their weapons either from a family member or because they are apart of a gang. They number of school shootings would go down tremendously if guns were kept away from
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads that: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” According to Nelson Lund, “Modern debates about the Second Amendment have focused on whether it protects a private right of individuals to keep and bear arms, or a right that can be exercised only through militia organizations like the National Guard,” however, this question did not come to people’s attention long after the Bill of Rights were adopted. Although there has been a lot of controversy over whether keeping the Second Amendment would be beneficial, many believe that getting rid of it would not be a massive step forward compared to where it stands now. Stricter gun control may slow down the likelihood of people obtaining guns, but it will not reduce the amount of gun violence that happens throughout the world. What outcomes do people believe will happen if they take away our gun rights? While the Second Amendment helps in preventing the number of crimes from increasing, it has been found that armed citizens are very helpful in reducing crime. For each additional year that a concealed handgun law is in effect, the homicide rate declines by 3 percent, rape by 2 percent, and robberies by over 2 percent, according to John Lott, author of “More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws.” However, having armed citizens walking out and about it makes it very difficult for policemen to identify the criminals from the responsible citizens with legal firearms.
School shootings have become a tragedy so common in America, that all of us has been affected in one way or another. Despite the fact that they happen once every few years, one time should be the enough and change should follow, this is not the case in most places. Some people think the solution to this problem can be solved by stricter gun laws, others believe the problem lies in Mental Health Awareness, both are uncertain but are the best option people can think of. Being a student and a member of the community, both of are well thought of solutions but they have their flaws. I believe the best way for schools to be safer is for the school system to be more in their community.
Statistical analysis about states in the U.S. proves the correlation between strict gun control policies and deaths related to firearms to the least extent. According to an article published by Richard Florida on CityLab, a research shows that states with stricter gun control have fewer gun-related fatalities. The study in the article was conducted by researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard School of Public Health. Researchers measured “legislative strength” of gun control policies in each state using data from Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Specifically, the elements that the researchers include when accounting for “legislative strength” are:
There have been several gun shootings in schools and students and teachers shouldn't be scared to go to school. Schools shouldn't have to have high security to keep things like this from happening. There needs to be stronger enforcement on this topic and there needs to be better punishments or ways to keep people from doing this.
Gun control should be implied more than it is now. More gun laws should be created in order to tame society. Americans own over 300 million guns. According to (Everitt,Ladd) the author of the article “Does the U.S. Need Tougher Gun-Control Laws?” There are 99 gun deaths a day and some who committed the crime were not eligible to obtain or carry a weapon. More teens are being killed with guns than any other crime. Teens are not eligible to obtain guns due to the age requirement that is 21 years of age with a background check. There are gun show loopholes were 18 year olds can go and buy a gun without a license and background check. “The major cities chiefs association endorses closing the gun show loophole” according to Richard Perez-Pena the
The reason is school shootings in schools have significantly increased within the past few years band now many are calling for action against this and two sides are being formed about this topic. On one side, people want to turn to gun right and want stricter gun laws on them and some want to ban the guns all together. On the other side people are recommending putting guns in the hands of teachers and school officers in the hopes of intimidating shooters as well as if a shooting does occur, having a chance to stop the criminal with and effective tool to do so.”Efforts to arm teachers and school staff were jump started in the wake of the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook elementary in Connecticut, in which 20 children and six teachers died. Facing a public outcry at the massacre, and renewed calls for gun control, the NRA pushed heavily in the opposite direction”(BBC). Schools need to find a way to fight back or prevent these situations from happening. “Shootings at K–12 schools shock us because schools are general safe havens from the gun violence that is so prevalent elsewhere”(giffords). There has been shooting at schools with guns across America . One problem is that theses kids that are entering
Since 2010 there have been thirty-one school shootings in the United States alone (Black). In this past year, the year of 2013, there have already been 8 school shootings in the USA (Black). Eight school shootings in one month. That number is outrageous and not healthy for our students to have the best learning experience. No student deserves to go to school fearing that they may fall victim to violence at their school. I believe that our schools can be made safer by a law being written that teachers should be allowed to carry concealed firearms in school. It is best for teachers to carry firearms to school because it will provide safety to
There also should be stricter gun laws in the country. In the book, “The Spiral Notebook” by Stephen and Joyce Singular, the authors refer to James Holmes, the theatre shooter in Aurora, Colorado and state that, “With just one of his guns, the AR-15, he’d fired thirty rounds in twenty-seven seconds” (Page 27). AR-15s should not be so easily available to any American. There should be stricter gun laws and background checks for these types of guns. Banning AR-15s would help with this problem. Also there should be a federal law requiring longer wait periods to purchase any firearms and conducting background checks for everyone in every state.
Why should school shootings be a concern in America? Other than the fact that 439 people have been shot or killed in brutal, gun involved school attacks in the last six years (Patel, 2018). The children hold the key to America's future, if they fear being shot in a school, how will the next generation of
In 2010, 860 people were murdered by firearms in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Gun violence is a violence committed with the use of a firearm. Criminal gun violence includes; murder, assault with a deadly weapon, suicide, or attempted suicide. Main reasons why people buy guns are because of self defense, hunting, target shooting, and just for fun. In the New York Metropolitan area mainly people want guns for self defense. Due to strict laws, the New York Metropolitan Area has some of the lowest gun violence in the entire United States of America.
Has this ever happen to you. You’re walking down the street and all of a sudden a stray gun jumps out of nowhere and fires at you.
Unfortunately, the notion of schools being a safe place is no longer a trend across American schools. Disturbing mass shootings in the U.S continue to shock the media. A school shooting is when someone attacks a school using a gun. The Secret Service says these shootings are "deliberately selected as the location for the attack". The reasons massacres occur in schools is because of poor security, violence in video games/media, and bullying. Shockingly the U.S. has the most school shootings than any other country in the world. According to the FBI, mass shootings occur, on average, every 2 weeks in the U.S. While the cause of school shootings are sometimes unpredictable, it is a growing issue and they need to be prevented. Most shooters don’t have mental issues, they have a plan to kill, so there is no singular cause that creates violent people. On April 16th, 2007, the most deadly school massacre occurred. Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two students at Virginia-Tech. As Americans, we no longer should turn on the news and witness these gruesome murders. We try to make sense of these murders, but it’s ineffectual. There are measures we can take as a society to help. The number one question in a school massacre is, "why would a person that has a capable sense of mind even do that?” It is our moral responsibility to fix these issues. In order to stop this problem, we need to find its roots.
Do you think that any USA’s citizen should be allowed to obtain a gun with no restrictions? Guns control is a controversial theme because everyone has a different opinion about having a gun. Many people use guns to feel protected to save their lives and the life of someone else. In this country, it is a benefit to have a gun, but it may be a problem if it arrives to the wrong person. The United States have been facing different situations with guns that have provoked the majority to obtain a gun to feel protected. It is very useful to have a gun because you can preserve your life, so it helps to save your life from crime or shooting, to be warned of delinquency and suicides, but people buy guns because it satisfies their
Many tragedies that involve guns on school campuses make people worry. Parents often ponder the question, “Is my child safe?” The answer is never a guaranteed which causes parents to fret. Parents should stop worrying. They need to trust school officials will protect their child or children. School officials should feel free to open-carry. There should be trained individuals, whether it is a teacher or an administrator that are trained for gun incidents. Schools, who believe that an outside person should protect them, should hire a resource officer. Resource officers should be placed in every Elementary, Middle and High School over the continental United States. Colleges should look into having an officer in every building on their campuses. Metal detectors come next; they would catch potential threats before they intentionally hurt anyone. Lastly, for all of this to happen the number one step towards gun safety would be teaching about gun safety. Teaching students and staff members about gun safety would possibly lower the rate of gun violence in school. Gun safety in the school system should be promoted.
Gun control is a good thing and beneficial for the society. Gun control law reduces the crime rate, reduces number of suicide deaths, reduces the number of less mass shootings, and reduces the accidental gun deaths. For example, “Both international and national multivariate analyses show that gun control legislation reduces overall fatalities related to firearms. This correlation is true for Canada and Australia, which adopted and maintained stricter gun control laws” (90). If you take away the guns, there is nothing that you need to defend yourself from gun violence and therefore without guns, it will be more peaceful. On the other hand, guns are essential for: formers who live near the forest (to protect themselves from wild animals) professional
