The Battle of Matthew’s Mill Chase Stoddard Period 4 10/7/14 “FIRE!” the captain screamed. The battle was at a draw with both the British and Americans firing volley after volley of lead at each other. The air was filled with smoke, the screams of dying men, and rumble of artillery near by. Then, all of a sudden the British pulled back and headed to their camp. The Americans were also heading back to their camp. The battle had started 2 days ago and both sides couldn’t break each other’s hold on the other. Both generals didn’t know what to do, but both vowed to never surrender. The family at the millhouse was waiting for their father to come back from the battle. Galloping up to the farm was a uniformed man, in blue. It was their father Matthew. …show more content…
He quickly dressed, grabbed his sword, and ran outside ready for action. Then he finally heard what people were shouting about. The British captured his family. He immediately rushed to the general’s tent, burst in it, hollering, “We must save them!” He saw with shock that the general’s pistol was on him. “Oh, it’s you,” said the general setting down his gun. “Now what’s all this about saving who and doing what?” he said. “My wife! And children!” Matthew gasped trying to catch his breath. “Why? What has happened?” the general inquired. “The redcoats have taken my family captive and I need permission to lead a rescue mission,” stated Major Matthew. “Granted!” barked the general, “Matthew! Get them home.” Matthew smiled and sprinted out of the tent calling to his men to prepare for battle and on the double. Five minutes later his men were in a diamond formation awaiting orders. “Innocent people’s lives are at stake,” roared Matthew, ”As a matter of fact my family’s lives are stake and they are being held hostage by the vile lobster-backs. I would ask you to follow me to save them and I would be forever in any man’s debt if he comes and fights for me. Who is with me!” he shouted. Matthew was surprised that not only all of his men cheered, but that 300 more voices around him also bellowed out. Recovering from his shock he said, “ We
Many individual soldier’s stories also demonstrate the resilience of either side, showing how unwilling they were to give up, and stop fighting, until absolutely necessary. Even John Hay’s efforts to get Florida to join upcoming United States political gatherings, show the unwavering pursuit for unity from the Union’s side.
On the night of May 9th 200 Green Mountain Boys assembled under Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold to capture Fort Ticonderoga. However only a small portion of the men could cross the lake to capture the fort as there weren’t enough boats for all the men. Fearful of losing the element of surprise Allen and Arnold decided to attack with their small force. With only one sentry on duty the colonists stormed the fort waking the men at gunpoint and disarming them. The captain was roused from his chambers and surrendered his sword peacefully, with nobody dying during the assault.
The First Battle of Lexington, which is located in Missouri, surprisingly also known as the Battle of the Hemp Bales or the Siege of Lexington, was fought for eight tedious days in 1861. From September 12 to September 20 the Union army and the pro-Confederate Missouri state guard in Lexington furiously clashed with muskets canons, bayonets and hemp bales. The Missouri state guard was a militia of approximately 25000 Confederate soldiers, although not all of these soldiers were used in this battle. The
The Bonhomme Richard was a merchant ship converted for naval use. It was a privately owned merchant shipped equipped with weapons. This ship was the best he had ever commanded. The Serapis was a British warship that was better armed and stronger. In a battle with the Serapis, John Paul Jones was losing. John Paul Jones bravely fought the Serapis for many hours. During the fiercely fought battle Jones Paul Jones’ ship was heavily damaged.. John Paul Jones did not flinch, he did not quit, he was determined to continue the fight and win at any cost. He fought the battle boldly and courageously. The British Captain of the Serapis asked Jones if he would wish to surrender, John Paul Jones answered “I have not yet begun to fight.” These words will always be associated with John Paul Jones demonstrating his fearlessness. Of course, John Paul Jones would win the battle, and the Serapis’ Captain would eventually surrender. Sadly, the Bonhomme Richard
The American troopers and the Patriots needed to persevere through numerous hard battles and snags. They had one objective and that was an oppression and that isn't something given to you (Doc #7). The American officers were exceptionally enthusiastic and remembered their objective and battled from July to December. The Americans needed to battle to attempt to achieve triumph and they contended energetically. The Americans knew the British had an Army that needed to authorize their oppression to have the privilege to charge them as well as ¨to tie us in all cases whatsoever¨. It had just been legitimized by the British to impose the Americans with the assent of gathering.
The attack began. Soldiers fired huge guns at the walls of Vera Cruz. One of the men at the guns happened to be Robert's brother, Smith Lee. When he could, Lee went to stand by his brother's gun. "I could see his white teeth through all the smoke of the fire"1 Lee said, in a letter to Mary. The Mexicans soon gave up Vera Cruz. General Scott thanked Lee for his work. Now the Army could move on to the Mexican capital. The march to Mexico City wo!uld be hard. General Scott asked Lee to find the best way to go. And he asked him to see what Santa Anna, the Mexican general, was doing. To get news for Scott, Lee went behind the lines of enemy soldiers. This was dangerous work. Once when Lee was behind enemy lines he heard voices. Mexican soldiers were coming to drink at a spring. Lee jumped under a log. More Mexicans came. They sat on the log and talked. Lee had to hide there until dark. Lee found out many things for Scott. Once he even found a secret road for the army. He was extremely brave. At Cerro Gordo he led the first line of men into battle. The Americans won. Lee then wrote to his son, Custis, "You have no idea what a horrible sight a field of battle is."2 Then came the biggest battle of the war. The Americans attacked a fort outside Mexico City. Lee planned the attack. For days he worked without sleep. He found out where the Mexican soldiers were. He knew where to put the big guns. It was e!asy for the Army to take the fort. The
Yesterday, the Americans took on the red coats at Breed’s Hill and ended up with a shocking realization of confidence. The great colonel, William Prescott, led the colonial men in The Battle of Bunker Hill. After hearing of possible British invasion, the colonial militia fortified Bunker Hill to counter the attack, only to be forced to move to the smaller Breed’s Hill. Later, the British marched to the hill from the Charleston Peninsula. An estimated 2,000 troops from Britain were quickly forced to retreat from colonial fire. The Americans fortified Breed’s Hill so well, that the British were forced to retreat a second time! As a single force, America celebrated at the feat, but quickly realized one setback... all the ammo was used up on the
We are lined up about to attack Seminary Ridge. It is one of the hottest days of the year, and I am sweating and trying to stay cool. As we split up and I am directed to little round top. I do not have faith in capturing Little Round Top for the reason that the Union has higher ground. We make many charges and we are all pushed back each time. Our side is finally tired and we are pushed back by a bayonet charge by the angry Unions. This is where the fighting stopped on our side of the battle.
I need your word.” “Okay, I promise.” Wilson went inside the Commander's room. “Sir. You might want to take a look at these.” He said. “Saints alive! Your man must be one heck of a pilot!” The Commander said Fascinate Before we knew it we were back in the air. Our mission; to clear the way for the bombers so they could blow that fortress all to heck. We prepared for war, a Gruesome war. We flew and shot down the German planes and the look out the gunners. We heard the bullets hitting against our plane. One of our planes lost its wing. It began falling. “The bombers are here!” I said to Wilson. We got in formation. The bombers dropped their bombs and hit the fortress. Part of one of the buildings debris hit our tail. “We’re hit!” Wilson said screaming. Our plane was going down. That's when we
I knew I had to withstand the pressure, though, even if it meant I would look like a bum. Washington had commanded General Charles Lee to lead the troops ahead to attack the British. I will let you know now, it is definitely not the decision that I would choose to make if I had George’s command. He had never shown the capability to lead a military; He was always jumpy and anxious before battles. Still, instead of me, Washington selects Lee. I hadn’t realized it, but I had been prolonging my eye contact with the earth before me, unaware of the general grasping the reins of his horse with
On July 1st, the Battle of Gettysburg had brought a tragedy for the both the Union and Confederacy, with more than 50,000 casualties. On the first day, Confederate forces attacked the Union causing their own forces to fall. On the second day though, the Union was prepared and caught the Confederacy off guard. With 19,000 casualties, Confederacy lost this one. On the final day of the battle, the Confederacy failed to attack the Union in several ways. Their first attempt was to take down the front line. Their second was Stuart’s cavalry trying to attack the Union’s rear. But the Union’s heroic acts had caused them to gain yet another victory. On July 4th, the battle had come to an end with the retreat of the Confederacy. The conclusion of this
It was December. Fora and I were sitting on a small boat with some other men, making our way across the Delaware river. We had already lost the battle in New York. We didn’t even have half of the amount of soldiers that the British did. Our troops also didn’t have very good weapons or any knowledge of how to use them. Most of us had lost all of our hope, but here we were, traveling to Trenton for another battle.
th (15)A long while ago a great warrior faced a situation that made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful enemy, whose men out numbered his own. He loaded his men into boats, sailed to the enemy’s country, unloaded his soldiers and equipment, then gave an order to burn the ships that had carried them there. Addressing his men before the first battle he said ” You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win. We now have no choice..we win or..we perish.” They won.
The battle for America’s independence is finally over. Yorktown has been won. However, British troops are still stationed here in Charleston. I somehow managed to get into a dispute with them, which led to a fight. This fight killed around 100 soldiers. Many others lay dying. I regret to inform you that I happen to be one of those men. General Washington was right. I’ve always been too reckless for my own good, to the point it will be the death of me. One of my fellow comrades is writing this down as I speak, because I have lost too much blood to write to you myself. Now, let mel say my goodbyes. Send my regards to family, friends, and fellow soldiers. But the person I will miss most of all is you. If I have to die for our freedom, so be it.
The US ARMY field artillery begins in the colonial period when American patriots were fighting against the British for imposing the three intolerable acts that infringed on the rights of the Americans especially for the residents of Boston who were more affected by these laws. In retaliation, the Americans were forming a militia and had created a supply depot to support these militia organizations. The General at that time sent troops to destroy the supply stores and in anticipation of this, the American militia waited along the British routes and poured fire on the British. The General sent a troop with two pounds of explosives used to destruct and disperse the Americans. This was when the Americans realized that they needed Artillery as well ("RIGHT OF THE LINE", 1984).
