When comparing the lines in the Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night painting and Sol LeWitt’s the Wall Drawing No. 681, the lines are the opposite. In the Starry Night painting the lines of the sky are very curvy and flowing, but the lines of the buildings are very straight. The artist in this painting is showing you a vision he has had during the time he was in the asylum. The lines of the sky are erratic, and it shows how the artist was feeling very unstable during the time he painted the piece. You can feel how peaceful the buildings are, but the sky is not peaceful. The artist is fighting with himself, and it shows in the painting. The Wall Drawing No.681 shows very straight and precise lines.
I have chosen Romanticism/ Post Impressionism, Olive Trees with yellow sky and sun, by Vincent Van Gogh; The Oxbow, by Thomas Cole, comparing it to the “Spirit Rising, by Christophe Vacher”.
A person’s childhood could eventually lead them to either a success or failure. Two men, later to become widely known across the globe because of their success, have had situations that helped developed them during their childhoods. Two such men would be Frederick Douglass and Vincent Van Gogh. Both excerpts from Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass and Vincent Van Gogh: Portrait of an Artist by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan, the reader gets an insight into their childhoods. Frederick Douglass was born an American slave, and became an abolitionist. Vincent Van Gogh, lived a normal childhood in the Netherlands, and became a famous painter after death. The childhood of Frederick Douglass lead to his success while the childhood of Vincent Van Gogh did not lead to his success while he was still alive.

Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s most well-known artists. He was the son of a pastor and was brought up in a religious atmosphere. He thought his true calling was to preach the gospel like his father. He became a preacher in a small coal mining town. This is when he starting becoming very interested in the people and things that surrounded him. He became an artist at the age of 27.
Vincent Willem Van Gogh was a Dutchman born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. The Starry Night is one of Van Gogh’s famous paintings in the world. It was believed that his painting was the view from his bedroom window. After a petition was signed saying Vincent Van Gogh was dangerous, they moved him to an asylum. He lived in a hospital where he suffered occasional relapse into delusions. While he was there, he was able to read, paint and withdraw from his room. As he was going through depression, Van Gogh then began to have hallucinations and even have thoughts of suicide. His art helped him stay emotionally balanced. He then started to paint The Starry Night, and used dark colors. For example, in the painting he clearly paints all the buildings dark and black and paints the stars and the moon brighter to make it stand out more. In his painting, he included a cypress tree which is usually found in cemeteries and represent mourning. There were rumors about his death, saying he had died because his illness
One of the very first things that people notice when looking at Van Gogh’s artwork is the lines. The lines are so busy they catch the viewer’s eyes. The lines used in Van Gogh’s Night Café are expressive. These lines are mostly rounded and do not follow determines paths. The swirling direction that makes the viewer see the motion. The lines can make you almost feel the radiance of the lights in the café. You will also find cross contouring lines throughout the picture. Van Gogh used this to show depth and definition to objects. This form of shading gave the image 3D form. For instance, you can find an example of the cross contouring in the details of the pool table. The lines on the floor show the viewer perspective. It shows you were you are
There have been different art forms that have come and go over the course of time. Hence I will discuss, two significant movements like Post-impressionism and Pop art. Two important artists from these movements are, Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. There are many differences and very few similarities between these two movements and artists, although more differences. Van Gogh is one of the most captivating artists of post-impressionism. . Throughout his career Van Gogh has painted many works. One of those magnificent paintings is “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. In the other hand we will discuss one of the popular paintings “ Gold Marilyn” by Andy Warhol. Warhol is also the most famous of the Pop Artists and played a major role in making the art movement popular.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.
Imagine a life where reality is distorted and the only true companion to walk through life with are paints, brushes, and a blank canvas beckoning the artist to reveal his truth. This is the life and reality of famed artist Vincent van Gogh. The artist led a tragic and depressing existence from a young child, which continued throughout his adult years until his early departure at the young age of 37. Van Gogh left behind a legacy of beautiful and interpretive paintings, which express appealing landscapes, delicate flowers, and humanity in their surroundings. It begs the question, how could a gifted artist depict and interpret society so well in his paintings but have an inability to make personal connections
The overwhelming night sky takes up most of the background. Van Gogh painted the sky with overlapping, rapid, and curving strokes that created a great dynamic, swirling motion. It's the night sky that seems to function as the life force, providing joie de vivre (joy of life) to this masterpiece. Galaxies are in motion and the stars could very well plunge into this sleepy town at any moment. The celestial imagery possesses grandeur of emotional intensity portrayed thru a variety of strokes and colors, all merging together to form a "corkscrew" in the
After doing some research about "The Night Cafe", I found out that the painting was painted in September 1888 while Van Gogh was living in Arles. Van Gogh moved to a room at Cafe de la Gare, where he found his inspiration for this painting. Prior to painting "The Night Cafe", Van Gogh was planning to paint the room and the people who he called "the night prowlers." In the painting itself there are five men, four of which are siting and the other one (the one in the white suit) is standing by the green billiard table which Van Gogh depicted as the cafe owner, but if you look closely you'll notice that there is one woman there, sitting in the far back, making it a total of six figures in the painting. As said in the excerpt, there are clashes
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most recognized artists in the world. Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. Van Gogh was born into a family of six children in which his father was a pastor and his mother was an artist. He was named after his stillborn brother who died exactly one year before he was born.
This painting depicts a regular café at night, with the dimensions of 72.4 x 92.1 cm (28 1/2 x 36 1/4 and an accession number of 1961.18.34 this panting stands out amongst other paintings because of how the myriad of colors and hues mix that causes a clash in contrast. In the Yale Art Gallery, this oil painting was in the American room among other American crafts. The thing that quickly caught my eye on this painting was the way Van Gogh applied detail, creativity and the unorthodox use of colors. The painting seemed to be dark and gloomy which was quite a unique quality about the painting. Van Gogh is one of the most famous expressionist artists that people know and love today. This oil painting on a canvas has been called one of Van Gogh's
Van Gogh was really good at what he did I really liked the Starry Night over Rhone painting it looked really realistic. I liked the way he always painted the sky or painted things in nature. He used the same colors that he used in the Starry Night to paint the art piece Starry Night Over
