The Association of American Painters and Sculptors (AAPS) conceived an exhibition entitled the Armory Show to introduce to introduce European and America Modern Art. Thus the Armory Show opened in New York City in 1913 displaying the arts representing Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism. These initial displays of modern art began to influence a new generation of American Artists and by the 1930 these influences fermented forming a new avant-garde organization that named their group the American Abstract Artist.
In early 19th century, the French government controlled the academies and salons of paintings. The impressionism took place in second half of 19th century, which was results of French artists rejecting the traditional government sanctioned academic painting that was dominating their arts at the time. The first independent art exhibition was held in 1874 for one month. Few of the famous artists’ who participated and help organize this exhibition was Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renior, Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro along with 25 other artists. They displayed approximately 165 paintings during this exhibit. This group of artists referred themselves as
The National Convention adopted a revolutionary calendar to replace the Gregorian Calendar on November 24, 1793. Despite people not wanting the calendar to change, the National Convention felt it needed to be changed because a new era had begun and they wanted to break away from the Roman Catholic Church. The responses of the people were not all good, some were bad given they did not want anything to
The place I chose for the field trip proposal is Epcot theme park. I chose this place because of its diverse culture exhibits. Some reasons I picked this place are, they have many culture experience's, you can explore different culture in one day, and it a good place to taste the different foods and music across the world. It ties into humanity because it explores different countries that have impacted our society from the food to the music, to even our architecture. It also shows us the diverse countries and some of its history.

1. “The White City had drawn men and protected them; the Black City now welcomed them back, on the eye of winter, with filth, starvation, and violence” (pg 323). During the World’s Fair, Chicago was a truly wonderful place. At first, all the people were distracted by the actual fair, but after everyone had dispersed, the White City returned to the Black City it normally was. All of the success that the head architects and Chicago’s people believed the fair had achieved didn’t leave a lasting imprint on the city. The fair ended, the magic faded, and The Black City swallowed the White City whole.
You may have heard that “everything is bigger in Texas.” and if you really want to experience how everything is bigger, you go to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR). The HLSR, or “Houston Rodeo” as it is referred to by Houstonians, is the largest event of its kind in the world and has been in session since 1932. In 2013, The HLSR had more people in attendance (approx 2.6 million) at the Rodeo than the entire population of the city of Houston (approx 2.1 million), which happens to be the 4th largest city in the United States as well as the most populated city in the state of Texas. The HLSR is held at Reliant Park for three weeks during March, and since parking is always a hassle, Reliant Park also happens to have one of the largest parking lots available as well.
The Chicago World Fair was an extraordinary attraction during the contrasting Gilded Age as innovations were constantly forming and shifting the world into a new age of technology. Celebrating Columbus's discovery of America, millions of people and many familiar faces such as Helen Keller, Jane Addams, Thomas Edison and etc., came together in the “White City” to witness a dream-like fantasy. Furthermore, the fair was an impactful influence that was formed by the architect, Daniel Burnham, and created a proud unification within the country. However, the fair was also the making of one of the first serial killers in America, H.H Holmes. Holmes trapped people inside his “hotel” and committed murder to an estimated count of 200 people. The unimaginable
When art was modernized, it was no longer a certain style. New artist were looking for new materials to use for paintings and sculptures. Artist were also wanting to free themselves from the depiction of external reality, and focus on art that could provide feeling or ideas. Modernists educated each other to embrace the “primitive” style of African and Pacific art. Cubism Style opened a path for artist to learn about pure abstraction or non- objective art. New wave of artistic experiment incarnation was called the avant-garde. Avant-garde were artists from the New York School who
Halloween is a widely celebrated holiday in America where kids dress up in costumes and go door to door around their neighborhood asking for candy. People tell stories about supernatural creatures, watch horror movies, and adorn their houses with jack-o-lanterns and skeletons. But Halloween was not always celebrated how it is today, and it has seen many changes in traditions throughout the years. Although many aspects of Halloween have changed from its origins to the celebrations today, the differences in the trick-or-treating process and its perseverance throughout the years show its relevance and importance to the holiday. To the Celtic people, Halloween was known as Samhain and was a festival to celebrate the end of summer, the coming of
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens. It opened on February 20, 1872 and was originally located at 681 on Fifth Avenue. Also known as “The Met”, the museum is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in New York City. It has a permanent collection containing more than two million works of art. The main building of the Met is one of the world’s largest art galleries. The museum permanent collection includes art from
I visited National Gallery of Art, Washington DC on Friday, March 29, 2013 to see the exhibition “Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Art and Design, 1848-1900”.
The artwork is one of the main ways to express the culture of a region or a country. Therefore, art has played a very important role throughout history. When talking about art, the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is probably that art is a painting or it is a sculpture. However, art has many forms of expression, and it closely connects to human’s daily life. Besides paintings and sculptures, art is everywhere around us. I am always interested in how people have linked art with daily life throughout history. For this reason, the two pieces of artwork I chose from my visit to the Museum of Fine Arts are both objects that can be used in everyday life: one is the mixing bowl and the other is an incense burner. Though they are from different cultures, have different making processes, and have a different purpose in usage, they both are good examples to show how artists tried to apply art using different techniques to human’s daily life.
world as did in the Paris to New York shift of the 1940's and 1950's.
The media is an important part of our daily lives. It shapes and molds the lens through which we see the world. It controls everything you see, read, and hear. Media also determines what is said, who said it, how it can be said, and who can hear it. The news for a lot of Americans calls them into action. Depending on what is being discussed it can really sway your emotions. The News can make you happy as well as make you sad or angry. Contrary to popular belief manipulation does not require a device or hypnotism; we are being brainwashed right before our eyes. Television is that most sophisticated media of worldwide communication and viewers are completely susceptible to the media molding their opinions and attitude; as well as influencing what is acceptable and what is not. There is an unconscious “groupthink” mentality that taints news coverage and allows only one side of a debate to receive a fair hearing. When that happens, the truth suffers. In this essay, I will discuss the types of bias and manipulation, how it affects us, and the ways to prevent it.
Geoffrey Chaucer, in his novel Canterbury Tales, characterizes twenty four pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury. Ranging from knights to aristocrats to the trade class , the descriptive passages depict his opinions on each traveller. These characters in turn reflect Chaucer’s criticism and attitude towards medieval society, an example of social commentary. One character specifically used to reflect Chaucer's views on Scottish culture, the lower class, and corrupt businessmen is the Miler. In the general prologue, Chaucer reveals an overall negative opinion towards the Miller’s appearance and actions, reflecting his disappoint with aspects of the Middle Ages.
