The question presented, concerning the South African apartheid and the music that was involved with the movements, debates whether the music came from the people’s desire to over come apartheid or if the music was a catalyst to the movement. As explained in the movie, the people used music for different aspects of the music, fundamentally a different song for every part of the movement. The music was a way in which the people could express themselves in a way that was noticed by their over rulers and which included all people taking part in the revolution.

The music that came from the apartheid movements showed many similarities to sub-Saharan African music. As we covered in discussion, a majority of sub-Saharan music focused on giving all members equal parts in every song, in example not having a specific lead singer but having every singer sing the same part of the song. The songs also focused on giving people individual freedom in singing parts of the song. This freedom of singing either the chorus, backup pieces, or yodeling, etc. reflected the views of those in the revolution, they wanted their individual freedom and respected others’. This equal distribution of musical parts in sub-Saharan culture took away any socio-economic differences between individuals, which is what the apartheid movement aimed at removing.
One movement that comes to mind when thinking of similar movements to that of the South African revolution and music is the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which took place in New York, USA in mid August 1969 (3). Shortened to Woodstock, this movement aimed at the American involvement in the Vietnam war. Famous musical artists, such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead, led a peaceful musical concert along with 400,000 attendees (3) aimed at spreading awareness of the harm of the war and corruption in the government in
Throughout the film Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony, black South Africans began converting their historical roots in music into a fight for freedom. As these oppressed individuals struggled for racial equality during the twentieth century, music classified as freedom songs emerged as the fight against the inhumane Apartheid intensified. These freedom songs, which are performed and played throughout the film, protest white supremacy and segregation using a combination of inspiring and punishing lyrics to ignite a flame in the hearts of the persecuted. Black South Africans found a way to rally together, fight, and survive the National Party’s attempt at complete segregation through music.
Apartheid is an Afrikaans word for apartness and also the title of an infamous system of racial segregation that governed South Africa for almost 50 years. The paper discusses how Marley’s music changed society by mainstreaming the ideas of black resistance, social justice, racial equality, and anti-colonialism to the baby-boom generation and generations endlessly onward. The paper will outline the historical background of reggae as well as the social cause to which it became attached by the work of Marley. The paper submits that reggae, ultimately, became the chief means of expressing the angst and dislocation felt by many within the African Diaspora. Finally, the paper will offer a critical analysis of one of Marley’s works, “I Shot the Sheriff”, and will explain why this signature work is a classic instance of reggae speaking out against injustice and the prevailing power structure.

I have always thought that Nelson Mandela has been one of the most important people in history. I find it very fascinating that one man could end the Apartheid and that is why I want to find out more about this. South Africa is a country with a past of enforced racism and separation of its multi-racial community. The White Europeans invaded South Africa and started a political system known as 'Apartheid' (meaning 'apartness'). This system severely restricted the rights and lifestyle of the non-White inhabitants of the country forcing them to live separately from the White Europeans. I have chosen to investigate how the Apartheid affected people’s lives, and also how and why the Apartheid system rose and fell in South Africa.

Although in many cases, this music was used for entertainment by the masses or majority, contrary to popular belief, black music served a greater purpose than just recreation. Dating all the way back to the beginning of slavery in the U.S. during the 17th century, music has been used to make a statement and send a message. As African American music progressed over the years, there were common themes expressed as the genres evolved. It has been an open letter to the world, documenting and protesting the ongoing oppression faced by blacks in the United States, as well as an outlet for frustration. For many African Americans, the music gave them the only voice that couldn’t be silenced by their oppressors.
When Afrika Bambaataa built Universal Zulu Nation, DJ’s, B-Boys, B-Girls, graffiti artists, and MC’s all had a place to express themselves with guns and violence set aside. On June 19, 1890 South Africans came into contact with African American music for the first time. This contact came when Orpheus McAdoo’s Virginia Jubilee Singers. Orpheus McAdoo, a graduate of Hampton Institute, now known as Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia joined five members of the original Fisk Jubilee Singers, an African American a capella group from Fisk University and began to tour places such as Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. When he returned to the U.S., he added four members to the minstrel troupe and in 1890 they found themselves in Cape Town, South Africa. Their tour in Cape Town was extremely successful and they forever left an impact on South African culture in the form of a Carnival that takes place each year. Kaapse Klopse, formerly known as the Coon Carnival takes place on January 2nd each year. Minstrel troupes gather in District 6 and take part in a parade and various competions. Various genres of music are represented in the Kaapse Klopse but one genre has been apart of the festivsal since its early beginnings, South African Jazz.
Scholars have attempted to define music, and to be quite honest, it will be a huge challenge to try to weave a definition around the art that is music, because it is beyond definition. However, for the purposes of this work, we shall adopt the definition by Aluede & Eregare (2009), not because the definition is, in itself, complete, but because it captures the very essence of what we look for in the definition of music. Music, according to Aluede & Aregare (2009), is not only an organization of sound but also a symbolic expression of a social and cultural organization, which reflects the values, past and present ways of life of human beings. Also, Jones (1975), cited in Amana and Onogu (2015), defines music as “a language which encodes emotions, aspirations and people’s goals in autonomous and self-expressive arts forms.” These definitions are important in understanding music, because they highlight the fact that music does not only appeal to the feel-good emotion, it is not only used for entertainment; it is a valid form of social expression and this underscores the centrality of music in African socio-cultural life.
Beginning early in the 1970s and extending into the ‘80s, students, laborers and ordinary citizens became more involved in the struggle against Apartheid. High school students began protesting the segregated system more vigorously, and many ended up dead at the hands of National Party police forces in the June uprising of 1976.
