In the 1940s, Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson were built. This was a huge part in the Anchorage/Alaska economy for many years. In 2005, these two bases merged became one. Right before 1970, Oil was discovered at the most northern tip of Alaska. This was now the new driving force of the economy and it still plays a big role today. At this point, people in America began to agree that buying Alaska was a good thing (Department of Commerce, 2015). On March 27, 1964, Good Friday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 struck Anchorage killing 115 people. The damages were astronomical. Anchorage has a city manager, which handles the day-to-day issues of the city. They have an elected Mayor and an 11-member assembly board. None of these positions are filled by people who are affiliated with a political party, for they are non-partisan. That is the way all city and village governments are in Alaska. The current mayor of Anchorage is Dan Sullivan and he is a registered Democrat (Ballotpedia, 2015).
Sullivan was elected Mayor on May 5, 2015 and his term is two years. The assembly/city council holds elections on opposite years that the mayor is elected. The Mayor of Anchorage is a Strong Mayor, which means he has the power to make a budget and veto anything that is passed by the Assembly. The City Council/Assembly is the city’s primary legislative body. The mayor is the chief executive of the city. The City of Anchorage and the rest of the Greater Anchorage Borough make the city one of the largest in the United States when it comes to land and square mileage. They need to approve and adopt the budget. They can vote on changing, adding, and subtracting items from the budget. They are also responsible for creating taxes and amending the laws the city has. They create new ordinances and they listen to what their constituents one (Ballotpedia, 2015). The assembly board members are separated into sections, which are usually called districts in other states. There are six total sections and five of the six sections elect two members, while one section only elects one person and that section is located in downtown Anchorage. Over time, the section with one representative has changed over time, but since the 1970s it has stayed the same. It was usually the area north of Anchorage since it holds the least number of people out of all the other districts (Municipality of Anchorage, 2015). The entire city votes for the school board members and the mayor. Those are the only positions where no districts or sections are involved.
