What is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s view of the American Dream? Did The American Dream destroy people happiness? How? The American Dream is defined as a person that working hard to be successful and wealthy in life. A novel called, “The Great Gatsby,” show how the American Dream is destroyed in the 1920s, where there was a time of parties, drinking, and bootlegger. Fitzgerald creating the characters from the West Egg and the East Egg, who are failing in gaining happiness. The West Egg is described as the “less fashionable,” (Fitzgerald 3) who started with nothing, a dream to be famous and the upper class. The East Egg is a city of people that come from wealthy. The Valley of Ashes is between the two cities separated by the different classes of wealth. Gatsby, Daisy, and Myrtle have been destroyed by the American Dream. The American Dream changing people for who they are. Daisy’s American Dream is to have happiness. She did a terrible mistake, married the wrong man because he was rich but unfaithful and abusive. At the beginning of the novel, Daisy finds out that her husband, Tom is having an affair with another woman. Jordan says, “She might have the decency not to telephone him a dinner time. Don’t you think?” (Fitzgerald 10) Jordan tells Nick that Tom got some women in New York. Daisy and Tom's relationship is an unhappy marriage. Tom seems to be rude towards her and doesn’t seem to care about her either. Daisy thinks that choosing him would change her life in a good way, hoping for love and happiness which describe her American Dream. She discovers that she has nothing because she thought that she will have all she desired for if she married Tom. She has a daughter who is three years old. Daisy doesn’t care about her, nor seem to be important in her life. When her child was born, Daisy said “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful fool.” (Fitzgerald, 11) The way Daisy speaks about her daughter, show that she doesn’t want her daughter to be smart instead to be a fool or she’ll suffer like her. Daisy is not a fool, but she acts like one. She believes that her daughter has to be a beautiful fool in order to be happy and successful. Throughout
