In the recent event of the Texas church shooting, the gunman was stopped by two ordinary citizens. These two men chased down the gunman until he shot himself and crashed his vehicle. Without the help of these two citizens, the gunman may have gotten away and killed more people. These two heroes briefly took the role of being a vigilante; taking the law into their own hands in order to protect other citizens. Some argue that the act of being a vigilante can be an illegal act in itself. By idolizing comic book heroes, the audience has a strong influence of justice related morals given to them. Although the act of being a vigilante may be illegal, it is necessary to help ensure the safety of all citizens.
We all do our best to protect what is ours, but how far will we go to do that and will it justify our reasons behind our actions? Whether it’s protecting our properties and possessions, or family or even ourselves, situations get out of hand and we are faced with making decisions that could change our lives and the lives of those around us. The tiniest detail can determine ones actions as justifiable or unjustifiable. For Don Luis Ceballos and Judy-Ann Laws Norman their actions of defense were unjustifiable according to a jury.
This paper will be covering the controversial case of the shooting of Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman. This was a polarizing trial for it pitted gun rights activists against gun-control activists and people who were generally against the new gun rhetoric that is in Florida. George Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch for the gated community and would always do his job diligently. However, one night he witnessed someone in a grey hoodie walking on the sidewalk wearing a hoodie. Zimmerman thought this person was suspicious and continued to follow him. After Zimmerman called in that he was following this individual, he was told not to leave his vehicle. Instead, he followed the person into who knows where and the rest of the story is up for debate. The defense team stated that Trayvon had jumped out of the bushes and begun to attack Zimmerman violently to the point where he felt that his life was in danger. The prosecution believed that Zimmerman had initiated a fight with Trayvon and he was at the mercy of Zimmerman at gunpoint for a significant amount of time.
You don’t need to carry a gun to be a vigilante. Sometimes, even a sizable club can suffice—such in the case of Buford Pusser, a former professional wrestler whose intolerance of crime led him to become sheriff and fearlessly tackle corruption in his hometown. Pusser’s life story served as an inspiration for the 1973 film Walking Tall that made him a hero across
The article from The Washington Post informs us that two police officers were shot while sitting in their squad cars in central Iowa Wednesday morning at 1:06am. They said it was an “ambush-style attack.” The man involved in the killings was waving a Confederate flag in front of a school. The police officers asked him to leave the school premises because he was showing offence to the African American’s in that school. He then showed up at a football game and performed the same actions. His actions were repugnant to the school and the people within the school. Sgt. Paul Parizek states that there were no interactions between the man and the officers in the car. He also states that, “the coward... that shot them while they sat in their car.” The man is afraid to face the officers and didn’t care who the officers were when he was shooting. At around 10:00am Wednesday morning they caught the shooter, Scott Michael Greene, and he is now in custody. Many people choose to do absurd acts to get revenge or to get back at someone for what has been done to them. The man that shot the two police officers was doing just that. He wanted power and to make fun of people who “weren’t like him.” Lord of the Flies explains that same exact thought
The study of Victorian prostitutes by historians came into its own in the 1970s and 1980s when there was the feminist revival in reclaiming the female body, femininity and female sexuality, historiographical trend reflecting social interest. Just as historians were eager to uncover the sexual underground of Victorian society, the Victorians were as equally fascinated as they were horrified and ashamed of the profession. In this case, we will be considering a ‘prostitute’ a profession, that is that the prostitute exchanged sexual acts for payment, be that monetarily or material goods. By constructing the “figure of the prostitute”, this essay will be considering the figure to be the image, portrayal and public perception of the prostitute. Thus,
Police Departments use appropriate force when dealing with the public?” argues that, “In 2006, NYPD fired 50 bullets at 23 year old Sean Bell and his friends” (“Police Brutality” 4). Also another example, “Police shot 41 rounds at Diallo, hitting him 19 times” (“Stop and Frisk” 3). The fact that NYPD fired 50 bullets at three minorities and Diallo getting shot 41 times and hit 19 times are both unnecessary and overkill. These facts prove that unnecessary force and overkill are still both relevant to modern day society because they both show how it is overkill to fire that many bullets at citizens and how other precautions could have been taken into consideration before the use of unnecessary force. Harper Lee demonstrates social injustice in “To Kill a Mockingbird” with the injustice of Tom Robinson’s case with no circumstantial evidence to convict Robinson in the 1930’s. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Atticus states,” The state has not produced one iota of medical evidence to the effect that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place” (Lee 271). The fact that the state did not have enough circumstantial evidence to directly show that Tom Robinson committed the crime points to racial discrimination because at the time, an African American would be convicted of their crime even if they committed no crime at
With as many as 100 million men and women that actively own and use firearms on a daily basis, and the use of those firearms to deter as many as 2 million physical attacks each year, the record of the previous statement regarding the extraordinary powers Bears out the Truths, each man is obligated to help protect and defend himself, his home, his family, his town or city, his state and his nation. One cannot rely on hired help to carry the spirit and concern for you and yours, as his own.
The idea of vigilante justice is popular in books, on television, and in movies, I don't think justice is achieved if the vigilant died afterwards. For example in, "And then there were none", the vigilante ends up also dying at the end. It's a lose lose situation. Instead of achieving justice and killing all the "murderers" he a became a murder himself. The three reasons i think he did not achieve justice are, first of all to achieve justice he wouldn't have died he would've wanted the attention for what he did "right". Second of all, I believe that most of the people he killed were innocent. Lastly, justice was not achieved because justice is another way of saying fair,, as in playing fair.. Which is the exact opposite of what justice
‘Stand Your Ground’ laws have been at the center of escalating deliberation, mainly after the law was applied in a number of exceedingly-broadcasted events (Auerbach, 2015, p.1). Stand Your Ground law is a term for a “type of self-protection in which an individual is legally allowed to defend his or herself against a threat or perceived threat against their life; law requires that individual be in a place he or she is lawfully allowed to be (Long, N.D.).” The debate concentrated on whether Stand Your Ground laws justifiably serve to protect the public. The laws are relevant to American society’s perception on self-defense.
It appears as though the repetitive and unfortunate tragedies of mass shootings have become incorporated into the everyday life of American culture. We are forced to live in a heightened degree of fear, skepticism, and hesitation concerning our public safety. This phenomenon could reasonably occur in response to the vast ineffectiveness of the country’s current gun laws. Time after time similar misfortunes arise, yet few major changes are implemented to prevent them from reoccurring in the future. We cannot let this trend continue any further. Though some claim that increased gun control is useless and infringes upon the Second Amendment, it limits civilians’ weapons grade, obstructs those deemed unfit to wield such lethal weapons, and insures a greater level of security, thus it should be executed.
In November of 2007, a man living in the Houston, Texas area pulled a shotgun out and killed two men he believed were robbing a neighbor’s home. The 61 year old man called 911 and asked the operator to dispatch police to capture the two men. The operator warned the man to stay inside, but he responded to the operator stating, “I have a right to protect myself too, sir. The laws have been changed in this country since September the first, and you know it.” In the previous months, Texas legislature had passed a version of the Stand Your Ground law that removed a
He illustrates that, “Gang violence has become more threatening to bystanders as gang members have started to arm themselves” (Wilson). This is used as a scare tactic to force the reader to fear for their safety with the current gun standards. He goes on to say that, “Guns often convert spontaneous outbursts of anger into fatal encounters. When some people carry them on the streets, others will want to carry them to protect themselves…” (Wilson). Both claims persuade the audience that they need to be able to protect themselves from dangerous criminals or acts of violence with the regulation of legal guns. Finally, James admits the imperfections of his plan
In this essay, the moral issue was questioning if the Secret Service was wrong to hire Albert Gonzalez. If the issue had been about Gonzalez’s actions, then I might reach a different ruling. However, because we are only looking at the Secret Service’s actions, I believe they did nothing wrong. The fact that this case is significant shows there are larger problems at hand than the Secret Service
The novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is an allegory portraying the evils and pitfalls of a totalitarian government. It attempts to illustrate a society where all live as equals has not existed, and cannot be obtained. Orwell, through the use of the character Squealer, demonstrates how propaganda can influence members of a communist community in a negative way. By drawing parallels to events in communist Russia, Orwell's Animal Farm shows how propaganda was used to dominate the Soviet people. By deceiving, threatening and order was maintained and the populace remained ignorant.. The story uses clear and easily understood language to explain and expose the downfall of communist Russia.
