The Academic Success Center: The Writing Center
The Academic Success Center, ASC, is a facility setting by college systems to assist students who want or need help to achieve their academic goals. The ASC at NOVA provides free tutoring services to all students for Math, Accounting, Information Systems Technology, Computer Science, Sciences, Languages, Psychology, Sociology, History, Music and so on and so forth.
The ASC offers walk-in sessions as well as appointment services, provided they are scheduled twenty-four hours in advance. These sessions are handled by peer tutors, students who have been successful in the selected course and have been recommended by faculty members.

Generally, students who make use of the WC and ASC perform really well in school.” This does not show to say that some students do not find visiting the WC as an inconvenience. Lema Sharifi said, “Some students get discouraged when they come for a walk-in to find that they have to wait for hours in line before a writing consultant can see them, due to a lack of sufficient staff.”
Besides the fact that the writing center is understaffed, there are some challenges faced every day by all writing centers, not just the writing center at NOVA Alexandria. Some of these challenges were mentioned in a paper by Rachel Cooke and Carol Blesdoe, “(1) guiding students through the sequence of the writing process; (2) assisting students who may be uncertain about assignment guidelines; (3) operating under time constraints; (4) empowering students to take charge of their learning; and (5)evaluation of sources for quality and preventing plagiarism.”
The NOVA Alexandria Writing Center, a place where students don’t just go because they need help; it is a place where students are taught to use their voices to tell a story and build the path they desire. A place where students are prepared for the real world. As Daniel Mahala stated, “… literacy has become more and more central and inescapable in the functioning of capitalist economies, and the consequences for workers not developing literate abilities

One aspect that has been suggested and criticized all at once is the notion of having a purposefully diverse cast of writing center tutors. Bethany Davila, a graduate student and writing center tutor at DePaul University, claims, “When writing centers fail to acknowledge or question the power structure within which
In the Center students will learn how to do many things that include meeting the general education requirements, exploring interests and goals related to choosing a major or career, and following the University’s policies and procedures. These are just some of the many things that students will learn at the Academic Center. To contact the office, you may call them at (580)-745-2370 or email at advising@se.edu. You may also visit the office which is located in the Center for Student Success room HM 217 and open Monday through Friday from 8:00 to
The Academic Success Center (ASC), located in room # is a collection of student services and programs that have been developed to help students reach their academic goals. The following services are available through the Academic Success Center:
One of these programs is the AIM Program. Within this program, the students selected receive academic, financial, and emotional support. First generation students can take advantage of this resource by talking to Peer Advising Coaches to relieve the stress that comes with a heavy academic workload. Alongside the Office of Academic Support, students have access to the Writing Studio formally known as the Writing Center. The Writing Studio is conveniently located on the main campus in Tigret Hall room 302. The services provide by the Writing studio include tutoring on Mondays-Thursdays from 10 o’clock in the morning to 4 o’clock in the afternoon and Fridays from 10 o’clock to 3 o’clock. For students who cannot make those times, the Writing Studio also has night hours offered inside of Library West on Mondays-Thursdays from approximately 5 to 8 o’clock in the evening. Tutors will work alongside students to help them expand their proofreading, editing, and overall writing skills so they can become competent writers. It is

I met with Linda from the writing center on 11/15/15 and here is the feedback that she provided.
It is the only way to receive help in some subjects. With this option, sessions must be both scheduled and cancelled 48 hours in advance.
This semester I was surprised by how much I actually learned and developed my writing skills. I was given the opportunity to learn the many steps that it is required to become a good writer. Writing requires a lot of work. It consists of various steps; prewriting, drafting, rewriting, proofreading and publishing. . All of these components are extremely important, and necessary, and will need to be follow to improve student’s writing.
The message of Jesus Christ and the Church is reflected though the eight Catholic Social Teaching principles. The purpose of the eight principles is to integrate faith and influence our relationship with God. The primary principle is the life and dignity of the human person. The first Catholic Social Teaching affirms that the children of God is sacred and valuable from the time of conception until death. For instance, unborn children, homeless people, and students are all equal in dignity. Additionally, the Catholic Church defends the dignity of each person, since God created people to love and serve him. Overall, the first Catholic Social Teaching principle can be applied to my four years at Maria Regina High School.
From the early beginning of the school year to the current day, my writing skills and knowledge have improved and broadened over time. If not drastic, the change is noticeable nevertheless. For almost an entirety of eighth grade, assignments of varying difficulty challenged me to a degree. To be frank, some seemed as though they were beyond my comprehension and ability. However, determination amalgamated with knowledge obtained in advance helped me to overcome my doubts, for I exceeded my expectations; surprisingly good grades and comments are a delight, owing to the fact of that I don’t tend to think of myself as being proficient at writing. Consequently, the assignments given to me this school year shaped me into who I am as a writer.
The University Writing Center (UWC) and the Academic Success Center (ASC) are two of the university initiatives that help students enrich their academic experience. While UWC assists students in improving their written and oral communication skills through one to one consulting sessions, online resources, and workshops, ASC works to enhance students’ intellectual performance through academic coaching, supplemental instruction, drop-in tutoring sessions, and peer mentoring. Both of the organizations take a collaborative learning approach to encourage students to develop necessary study skills for academic success and increase student retention. ASC offers various student development programs; however, our focus for this proposal will be on drop-in tutoring services offered by ASC.
Writing centers are peer run facilities where students can come to receive assistance with any writing assignment. At our school’s writing center, peer tutors revise papers in any stage of the writing process and “make better writers not just better papers”. Schools and universities alike have similar centers where people can come to advance their skill set. Similar to Berlin High School, universities use writing centers to help their students advance their writing. Colleges such as the University of Connecticut, the University of Rhode Island, and Michigan State University all have various techniques that could be applied to our writing center. Overall, from my research I have found that there are many different approaches to writing centers
In the aftermath of the 2008 economic recession, cash-strapped universities have tried to balance their books by slashing programs perceived as “non-essential”. As a result, university programs and departments have been forced to justify their existence in order to protect themselves against further cuts. In the midst of this fight for funding, humanities programs, including the writing department, tend to bear the brunt of cuts. The value of writing programs has never been so disputed in the entire history of American education. In light of this new trend, the question of what exactly the writing program is has never been more pertinent. More specifically, we can ask what writing tutoring programs have to offer at increasingly
Computers are indeed a necessary part of our lives day in and out. Some of us need to face them all day, others spend only a few hours or less. Nevertheless it is undeniable all of us get to a certain point in time where our eyes feel the strain of using it. How can we avoid computer eyestrain? Here are a few pointers to help our eyes stay healthy. Break up the time we spend on the computer. For those that need to spend hours at a time on the computer, the degree of eyestrain often correlates with the length of usage of the computer. Taking a very short break after 30 minutes e.g. even if only for 1 minute will help to reduce the fatigue. Use eye lubricants when necessary. When using the computer, most of us stare at the screens because we are concentrating on something, This reduces the blink rate and results in dry eyes. For some, just resting the eyes by closing it for a short period helps to get our eyes sufficiently moist again, however some people 's eyes are so dry that they need regular lubricants to alleviate the symptoms. Use eye lubricants that are recommended by your doctor. Do not get into the habit of using steroidal based eyes or eyedrops that cause vessel constriction (giving the false security of having white eyes) as these can cause future unwanted side effects such as glaucoma. When using lubricants, those with severe dry eyes should use it on a regular basis rather than waiting for their eyes to feel pain or discomfort first. Relax
