Sherman Alexie's novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” tells the story of a high school student named “Arnold Spirit” (Junior). Junior lives on the Spokane Indian reservations. Early in the book Junior leaves his reservation to join a more academically improved “White School”. He was born with too much cerebral spinal fluid in his skull which he is teased for at school. Although the book is relatable, to a high school student, it should not be forcibly read at schools. Students at Arnold’s school treat him differently because of his race. Throughout the book it’s racist, it has bad influences on students, and it has inappropriate language.

There's a lot of bullying in this book. Also, in this story there is physical abuse. Another reason I think this book is a bad influence on students is because it talks about getting into fights. An example of bullying in this book would be “So, weak and poor and scared, I let them all call me names while I tried to figure out what to do.” If Students read this book they could get influence to try any of these bullying attempts. Also, in the beginning of the book one of the characters decides to take revenge on some people, and he ends up shaving off their eyebrows. Schools should not allow this Book because it may influence students to do mean and harmful actions in this book. Not only is this a bad influence on students, the book is also race is. For example, “ Did you know that Indians are living proof that nig**** f*** buffalo?” It is not only racism toward Indians, but also towards African people. They also treat Indians like they are from another galaxy. There are some parts of the book where they treat Arnold based on stereotypes.
