That was Then, This is Now by S.E. Hinton tells the story of two close friends, Bryon and Mark. As the book progresses Mark and Bryon begin to grow apart. Eventually Bryon turns Mark into the authorities for selling illegal substances. Bryon made the wrong decision by turning Mark in. Bryon’s decision to turn Mark in was wrong because they were like brothers, and family should never turn a cold shoulder to one another. Bryon and his mother took Mark in at an early age, due to the fact that neither of his parents were alive. Although Bryon’s mother has made major contributions in Mark’s life, Bryon is the only person that Mark seems to have a real emotional connection with. In the book Mark says “Bryon your moms been great to me and everything, but I don’t feel like she’s really my old lady. But I feel like you’re my brother. A real one” (Hinton 63). He never shows this type of emotion to anyone else in the story. Bryon’s decision came as a total blind side to Mark. There are many examples in the story where Mark takes care of Bryon during his wrong doing. For example, when Bryon gets drunk in the story Mark is there to take care of him. Mark takes his shoes off and gets him to bed (Hinton 114). Also when Bryon is preparing for his first date with Cathy, Mark gets Bryon a nice shirt …show more content…
If anyone could get through to Mark it would be Bryon. Although Mark does not show many examples of maturing or taking responsibility, he does seem to be responsive to Bryon. For example, when Bryon was beaten up by the Shepards Mark wanted to get back at the Shepards. However, Bryon said he was tired of fighting and getting even with people (Hinton 129). Bryon told Mark not to fight the Shepards and at first Mark listened (Hinton 131). Maybe if Bryon had just asked Mark to stop selling the pills, he would have, and the whole situation could have been
The book I am reading is That Was Then, This Is Now by S.E. Hinton. This book is in the first person point of view. In the beginning of the book it starts off by telling you about the two main characters of the story which are Mark and Bryon. The story is told by Bryon. Bryon and Mark consider each other to be brothers because Mark doesn’t really have a family. They live at home with Bryon’s mom. The two boys go to their friend Charlie’s bar all the time and the book introduces Charlie. Mark and Bryon are both under age and they are not supposed to be in the bar but Charlie lets them come in and buy some cokes. They owe Charlie money so they went to M&M. M&M is a friend of theirs.
The book is about a 15 year old named Maurice Anderson who lives in a bad part of New York, and gets sent to Juvie for stealing prescription pads, from a drug store and selling them to a local
He links M&M condition with Mark selling drugs, which also explains where he has been getting all the money. Bryon ends up calling the cops. When Mark gets home he try’s defend what he’s done, Bryon then realizes that Mark has no sense of right or wrong what so ever. The cops come and take Mark away while he’s asking Bryon why he’s doing this. The next morning Bryon in not sure if what he did was right. He realizes he no longer loves Cathy and grows away from her. Later he testifies against Mark in court. In which his dumbness gets him five years in the state reformatory. Bryon ends up devoting himself to work where he gets a promotion from sack boy to clerk. At the end of the summer Bryon decides to go and see Mark. There he tries to apologize and talks about the good times they had but Mark rejects it saying “that was then, this is now.” Later mark gets sent up the river to the state prison. Bryon says he has lost his ability to care anymore he thinks about the events of the previous year trying to figure out what happened to make these things happen. He wishes he was a kid again when he had all the answers.
In the novel, That Was Then, This Is Now, by S.E. Hinton, the protagonist, Bryon, is clearly a dynamic character. The book starts off with Bryon and his adopted brother, Mark, being almost identical. They do everything together and are not only brothers but best friends too. Only, Bryon does not stay this way. Throughout this coming-of-age novel, he matures and changes, growing away from Mark. This causes several difficulties between the two boys, as they both must learn to live with the change. This change is distinctly displayed throughout the novel. For one, Bryon’s dynamic character is shown on page 100, where he says, “in the past I thought in terms of ‘we,’ now I was thinking in terms of ‘me.’ ” This quote obviously shows how Bryon is
The book That was Then, This Is Now is about to really good friends Bryon and Mark starting to go their separate ways. Bryon was a 16 year old hustler who lived in a hood. His mother was poor and she had adopted his best friend Mark. Mark was an illegitimate who was adopted by new parents that got in a drunken fight and killed each other. Mark was a thief, and he always got away with everything that he possibly could do. Teen kids in there element who thought they could rule the world, everything was theirs and that nothing could possibly go wrong. They did everything bad together smoke, drink, jump kids for their money, steal, skip school, take drugs and get into gang brawls.
It is something necessary, and can be change quite easily by people and characters. There were many relationships and decisions impacted, and Bryon always wondered, “What if all this did not happen?” Before M&M ran away, Bryon and Cathy were a perfectly happy couple. But after he ran away, Cathy, being the closest sibling to M&M, was extremely worried about him and started becoming hysterical. Bryon became increasingly worried about Cathy and M&M as the days went on. After one crazy night of looking and finding M&M weak and sick from taking drugs, Bryon came back home, shook, when he found a bottle of pills under his best friend, Mark’s, bed. On impulse, he called the cops on his best friend. After seeing what had happened to M&M, Bryon was troubled at the fact that Mark was selling harmful drugs to innocent children. If Bryon hadn’t experienced M&M’s escape from home, he may have made a better and more realistic decision. Now, what if all this hadn’t happened? If M&M had not run away and just talked to his father instead, he would have never taken drugs, Cathy wouldn’t have gone hysterical, there would have been a smaller chance of Bryon calling the police on Mark, and Mr. Carlson would have still learned his lesson. In other words, things would have been much better. Overall, all because M&M decide to ran away from his problems, a lot change very quickly, and for the
I’m here to press charges against Doodle’s brother for Doodle Armstrong's death, your honor. I’m Madison Willie. I have strong evidence that proves he says things to Doodle that may discourage him, he treats Doodle with cruelty, and he can be selfish towards Doodle. He is guilty and should be charged with a felony.
The main character Paul knows that his older brother Erik is a murderer. Paul sees that Erik is bad when everyone else around him thinks that he is a star. On page 3 it states “I burst through the front door, crying hysterically. My goggles were twisted around my head. I spun around looking for Mom. Then Mom and Dad were both in front of me holding my shoulders, trying to calm me down, trying to understand the word I was saying over and over. It was “Erik.” I was saying “Erik.” Dad finally understood. He looked right in my eyes and asked. Erik? Erik what Paul? I stammered out Erik tried to kill me.” This shows that others, even his parents, are oblivious to Erik’s bad behavior.
However, they also have strong differences. Bryon is a big hustler. He tries to get money by playing pool at bars. Mark, on the other hand, is a thief. He sneaks around picking pockets and stealing money from people. Even though both boys have fun fighting and stealing, Bryon starts to see that fighting people for no reason is wrong. Mark still thinks stealing is enjoyable and amusing. Mark is very conceded and only care about himself and his feelings. Unlike Mark, Bryon cares about other people's emotions and thinks before he acts. For example, when Mike Chambers, a boy in the hospital, told his story of how he got beat up, Mark said he would hate that person for the rest of his life. Bryon understood why the person might have done such a terrible
In the book “They say. I say”, Michael Pollan and Mary Maxfield have different formulas for eating. Are the ideas that society has today differ or not? Michael Pollan believes that one should “Eat food. Not much. Mostly plants” (426). What he explains in his idea is that one should eat real food and not the processed. He also believes that the food industry is the one to blame for confusing people in what they are eating because all of the food is being processed and it is not real. By this he explains how America should “quit obsessing over this French paradox and start obsessing over the French fry” (442). In contrast, Mary Maxfield argues that one should “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs.” Maxfield built up the BMI, a tool to measure one’s body fat. Many people look into what is right and wrong to eat. Mary Maxfield explains that yes, we can eat healthy, but we can also eat whatever we’d like and still survive. Because many people have different formulas and rules to follow when it comes to eating, I believe that one has to set a goal for themselves. Be happy with achieving the goals one sets and portion out the food.
He is now serving a minimum of five years in jail, all due to the fact that he was doing what his parents were doing. Parents are role models for their kids, and if a kid's role models sell drugs, there is a good chance that the kid will as well. His whole family was torn apart. The allure of what and older sibling does was also a key theme in both The Pact and in my friend's life. In The Pact little kids would idolize their older brothers and sisters, wanting to do every thing in which their siblings did. This was also true in Paul's case. His brother Brian was only fifteen years old. Since his brother sold drugs, the person who he looked up to, he began selling drugs. He was arrested as well and is serving time in a juvenile detention center. Paul's life was ruined for following what his role models did, and his brother's life was ruined for following what his big brother did. These themes of following the actions of what someone's parents and/or older brother or sister do are
The quote "Character is what you are in the dark" - Dwight Lyman Moody has a few meanings. Mostly it means that you're different when you're alone. When you're around people they are influences of some sort. If you get into a situation when you're with people you might react differently than if you were alone, resulting in a different outcome. A lot of the time people aren't their true self around friends, or family, or whoever it may be for many reasons. A big reason is they don't want to be judged. Maybe they wanna look "cool" or get popular for something. Maybe they think they'll be looked at differently for being who they truly are. So basically fear of what others think keeps us from being who we really are. Fear can make us act different,
