It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with the single tug the boy gave it from behind. But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk, and his legs flew up. The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jeaned sitter. Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled. After that the woman said, “Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here.” She still held him. But she bent down enough to permit him to stoop and pick up her purse. Then she said, “Now ain’t you ashamed of yourself?” Firmly gripped by his shirt front, the boy said, “Yes’m.” The woman said, “What did you want to do it for?” The boy said, “I didn’t aim to.” She said, “You a lie!” By that time two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look, and some stood watching. “If I turn you loose, will you run?” asked the woman. “Yes’m,” said the boy. “Then I won’t turn you loose,” said the woman. Out in the night Roger waiting for his next victim Mrs. Jones walks past and there he goes as fast as his small, nimble body could carry him, he grabs the purse and with all the weight of her unintendedly heavy pocket book and her heavy self he fell fast. Roger starts to understand what just happens, but it was too late, he was already being held by his collar. Roger started to feel hot in the face in which he figured they could easily see, but all he wanted was to be let go. Mrs. Jones started ranting again about how his face was dirty, but that didn’t matter to him, he had even told her he wasn’t hungry that was a bad lie, he was starving, but no matter what he could not change Mrs. Jones mind he was going home with her to wash his face and eat some nice food he stared at the door as she turned him loose but he didn’t run so he washed his face. Roger sat where she could not see him and decided to move to show trust.
Another lady figured the kid’s mothers knew where they were so she didn’t feel the need to intrude. With no interference from anyone the boys continued on playing around and the train began to slow down and as it was slowing down the lady who was afraid of embarrassment, saw the boys jerk forward and backward and grab the swinging guard chains. For the past two years, I have been studying anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Although I had pursued anthropology, as I started taking courses and meeting people in this field of study, I felt I had made a wrong choice in major but tried to continue my studies anyway. I was not only depressed but also frightened by the fact that if I quit now, I would be behind everyone else in any field of study. However at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, I have found the perfect major for me and I am confident that FIDM will prepare me for not only a job, but a career.

In the short story "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes readers first think that the little boy Roger is a thief, but he most definitely does not stay one. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones changes little Roger for the better. To start, in the beginning of the story Roger has no money. He is broke and has no family what so ever. So the fact that Mrs. Jones is bringing him into her own home and feeding him, washing him, and giving him money should mean a lot for Roger. To start, in the beginning of the story Roger needs money. He is poor and has no family. So instead of asking Mrs. Jones, he attempts to rob her on the corner of the street at 11pm and tries to take her purse. In the end he does not succeed. By the end of the short story, Roger knows right from wrong since Mrs. Jones gave him a tough lesson on how to behave in life. He doesn't try to escape from her when he has the chance, he actually makes sure Mrs. Jones trust him. He is also very polite to the woman and could not stop saying thank you for the food, money, and for washing his face.
