The Australian rock group, AC/DC, discovered its name from its guitar player's sister's sewing machine that could be powered by either alternating currents or direct currents. These forms of power were developed by two inventors Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla in the late 1880's. During this time, the Chicago Fair needed a power source, so there was a bid to see which source could power the Fair while spending the least amount of money. This bid sparked the War of the Currents in which Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla conflicted over which source would power the Exposition. Shortly after, the promotion of power grids swept larger cities, in order to be able to use the light bulb, Edison needed support from large grids spanning over the entire country. But Edison’s design was flawed, he was using DC, or direct connect as his main source of power, which only provided electricity over short distances. Where in Europe, people began using a different way of transferring electricity, AC, or alternate connect routes. George Westinghouse, Edison’s rival, adopted and improved on this new technique, eventually setting up his own electric network. This new network would eventually beat Edison, and by the early 1890s, AC became the most used method of transferring electricity.
People such as Benjamin Franklin, Eli Whitney, and Samuel F.B. Morse have made life changing moments in history. Franklin introduce the idea of electricity, with his more commonly known experiment the key and kite. Though Franklin only established a connection with lightning and electricity, it lead to greater discoveries. Such as the controversy, Tesla versus Edison, and alternating currents(AC) versus direct currents(DC). With all invention there is the common theme of aiding civilization; to make diffucult tasks simpler, but we can't always predict the outcomes.
With his inventions and ideas, Nikola Tesla was able to change both the United States and the World. Through hard work and many sleepless nights, Tesla was able to create a cheaper yet efficient electricity supply system, which relied on Alternating Current (AC), that would become the main supply system in America over rival Thomas Edison’s then popular supply system, which relied on Direct Current energy (DC), in the 1890’s. Some of his inventions and ideas, such as the Tesla Coil, and the idea of wireless communication, gave way to the invention of many other modern inventions, such as the radio, X-ray, and the cell phone. Around the same time another inventor, George Westinghouse was trying to introduce his alternating current system to the world. Soon after, Tesla was contacted by Westinghouse to purchase all of his patents. Tesla then began working alongside by Westinghouse. However, they ultimately came out victorious with their AC system, Edison was able to bring his system to the market and made his inventions accessible to the world, which Tesla didn’t really do that.
The success done by Thomas Edison lined up the competitor, who were shocked by the great invention of Thomas Edison. The biggest competitor to Thomas Edison Company was George Westinghouse and his company which patented a new technique to deliver electrical power through long distances. George Westinghouse noticed that Edison low voltage DC motors were not able to transmit the electrical power effectively for more than half a mile [1]. The efficiency of DC generators was not effective to transmit the electric power to long distances because of the high impedance and the resistivity of the wires. The Railroad and the Pony Express has been the only way to communicate remotely and send correspondence. Joseph Henry and Samuel F.B. Morse would sculpture the future of communication with the invention of the electromagnet and telegraph. Joseph was a graduate of Princeton (Then called the College of New Jersey) as a physicist. The fascination with electricity and magnetism in which he had read reports on from Europe fascinated his desire to research and develop an electromagnet. This shaped our future of electricity as we see it today. With the ability to distinguish between high amperage circuits and high voltage circuits, this laid the baseline for what we know today as “Inductance”. Electrical conductor produces energy by the changing of current or the changing of voltage to produce a strong magnetic force while only using a small battery. Tesla and Edison did not get along; they had different concepts of how to transmit energy. Edison used direct current, but Howard 2 it was inferior to Tesla’s alternating current. Direct current could not be transmitted very far and needed more power stations, while alternating current could go further, was stronger and able to power electronics more efficiently. They soon were involved in what became known as “The War of the Currents”. They fought to get funding for their inventions and for their energy source to be used nationwide.

The first type of current that was being used was alternating current. This was developed by Tesla, and the idea is that the direction of the current is changing directions periodically. AC is used to supply energy to houses, office buildings, and many more structures. An alternator is what is used to produce AC, this occurs when a piece of wire is spun inside of a magnetic field which results in a current running along the wire. There are many things that influence the rotation of the wire including flowing water, a wind turbine, and a steam turbine.
Nikola Tesla is regarded as one of the most brilliant inventors in history. His work provided the basis for the modern alternating current power system, as well as having developed both radio and the fluorescent light bulb. He worked with Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, among others. He was also widely misunderstood by his peers and the public at large.
