Suicide in Teens Suicide is a serious problem in our high schools. Kids you wouldn't even think that would be contemplating suicide are. Suicide is the third most leading cause of death in teens. That is a large number of students. Why are teens deciding that suicide is the only way out or why suicide is the answer to life's struggle. The number of deaths is just too much and we really need to try to fix it. The article by Keith A.King “Preliminary Effectiveness of Surviving the Teens® Suicide Prevention and Depression Awareness Program on Adolescents' Suicidality and Self-Efficacy in Performing Help-Seeking Behaviors.” was a very interesting article about teen suicide. It showed a lot of the main points on suicide and also had some statistics. Suicide is the third most leading cause of death in kids from ages 10-24 (King 581). Dickstein, M.D., FAAP “Relationship between teen suicide and non-suicidal self-injury” was a very intriguing article on the relationship between suicidal and non-suicidal deaths in people aged 15-21 years of age. The differences were also there. The facts are really interesting like that 16% of all high school students have seriously contemplated suicide in the last year with around 13% writing a suicide plan as said in this quote from the article “with 16% of high school students having seriously contemplated suicide during the past year, 13% making a suicide plan, 8% making an SA, and 2.4% making an SA requiring medical treatment, according to the 2011 national Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance survey.” (Kerri L. Kim PD). This is a real large number considering. There has also been studies done at several hospitals that have showed more unseen percentages.
