So it is important to realize the stakes in preventing teen suicide. Part of preventing teen suicide also includes recognizing the issues that can trigger feelings of teen depression leading to suicidal thoughts and feelings. The rate of suicide, the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally, increases each year. “More adolescents die each year from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined” (Preventing Teen Suicide, 2016, p.2). These facts show suicide is a serious problem among teens. Last year, teen suicide became the second leading cause of death in the United States confirming the significant increase in teen suicides.
According to Fowler, Crosby, Parks, and Ivey (2013), suicide and nonfatal suicidal ideations are significant public health concerns for adolescents and young adults. While the onset of suicidal behaviors is observed as young as six years of age, rates of death and nonfatal injury resulting from suicidal behavior are moderately low until 15 years of age (Fowler et al., 2013). According to Fowler et al (2013), the most current available statistics in the United States (U. S.) reported suicide as the third leading cause of death among youth aged 10-14 and 15-19 years, and it was the second leading cause of death among persons aged 20-24 years.
There have been countless cases of suicide. Suicide rates for those between the ages of 10-14 increased between 1981 and 2005. In just 2005 alone, 270 developing teenagers ranging from the age of 10 to 14 completed
Teen suicide is a major problem in our society today. The adolescent suicide rate has tripled since 1960, while being the largest cause of death between the ages of 15 and 24. This is the one single age group that has seen an increase in suicides over the past thirty years. There are about 10,000 reported suicides reported annually. It is estimated however, that the true number of teen suicides is actually three to four times that number when unreported deaths are factored in.
Teen suicide is one of the leading causes of death among teens and a significant problem in the United States. Consequently, suicide is a tragedy not only for that person, but also for their family and friends that are left behind (Bell). Many teens of all races are affected by this intentional, self-inflicted death. Thousands of teenagers commit suicide each year, but how many people actually take the time to find out why these teens would take their own lives? According to “About Teen Suicide” (2015), suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24 years old. Teen suicide is a serious problem for young people; it is not something we put aside and forget it ever happened. Many teenagers commit suicide to escape the unbearable pain of physical, emotional and substance abuse happening in their lives.
Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24. Approximately twenty percent of teens experience depression before they reach adulthood. I am apart of that twenty percent.
Suicide has become a major problem in the United States and it's become too big of an issue to ignore. It is the leading cause of death in teens. The yearly rate has increased to 42,773, and suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, while homicide ranks at number 17.
The symptoms and statistics of teen suicide should get the attention of all parents. According to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, over 38,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year. In 2010 (latest available data), there were 38,364 reported suicide deaths.
Teen suicide rates are getting out of control. Teen suicide has increased four-fold in the last few decades and is now the third leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15-24 (Current Health 2). Teen suicide is the more common reason for death in the 10-19 age group. Teens commit suicide to escape their troubles in school, family and social life. Antidepressants, therapy, and counseling help tend to teen depression and teen suicide. There are ways to prevent teen suicide and help people who are having suicidal thoughts. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in those ages 15-24, in the United States (CDC, 2017). The suicide rate in adolescents has steadily increased each year since 2009 (CDC, 2017). More than 90% of people who die from suicide have depression or other mental disorders (NIMH, 2017). In 2015, an estimated 3 million adolescents aged 12-17 in the US had at least one major depressive episode (NIMH, 2017).
Teen suicide is the third leading cause of death for high schools students (Health wise). Suicide is a voluntary self-inflicting injury or act of violence with the intent of dying (Teen Suicide). Suicide is such a depressing way to end your life, especially for young people. Young people have their whole life ahead of them, college, discovering themselves, making a family, and just living their life. Committing suicide throws these choices away and it can negatively impact the people around them.
Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one’s life. Many different factors can cause suicide such as, bullying, mental disorders, or other complicated situations. Over the years, teen suicide ratings have been steadily increasing. For young people in the United States, suicide is ranked the second in the leading cause of death. Society needs to bring more awareness to this issue. There should be more awareness on how to identify suicidal people, the risk factors, and ways to prevent suicide attempts.
With suicide being the 3rd leading cause of death among young teens, it is vital that we educate ourselves and others on the warning signs and risk facts because the more information obtained contributes to preventing suicidal thoughts and attempts.
