Students around America all use the new technology that the government has funded them. The government is putting more and more technology into schools hoping that it will help the students learn more. In fact, the new technology is not helping, but making things worse for the younger adolescence. It is destroying the minds of students, in which, teachers/parents do not realize. Computers and IPads are being use every day throughout the school system to “teach” children. “We live in a high-tech world-with high-tech classrooms,” states Pamela Deloatch. All schools embrace the ability to have electronics during class, but in the end, it can be astonishing how effective they can be. With online classes, it can be hard to get away from technology, so children can try to open a textbook—instead of looking up their answers. Although technology has become an important part in the school system, it will continue to destroy the minds of younger adolescence, and there are many reasons for this. According to a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study, which involved elementary children, concluded that on average 75 percent of parents allowed their children to have bedroom TV’s, North American households keep their TV’s on for 50 percent of the day, and use 7.5 hours of technology entertainment per day (Rowan). Technology is becoming a problem throughout the United States, especially in elementary aged kids. Parents are introducing technology as early as infants so that they understand certain information at an early age. When parents introduce technology at such an early age they are giving their children the advantage to be addicted to the wonders of it. Young children are at a high risk of brain damage with the advancement of technology. The more adults introduce technology to younger children the higher the chances of problems it causes. Therefore, children with less physical contact tend to have trouble developing social skills. Needless to say, there are also various benefits of the use of technology if integrated appropriately into the early childhood curriculum design. However, the benefits usually tend to get easily overlooked by the negatives. This paper will examine the effects of technology on young children and how it supports their development in all domains including physical, cognitive, and social. As we all know, technology is changing and evolving every day; but it's almost as if the technology is taking over the minds of our future generation. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more all the time. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. These devices can come in handy and can be helpful, but they almost are consuming everyone's mind and minimizing critical thinking. Many of technology users are children or young adults. Although the use of technology in education can have some positive results, it has more negative effects that are affecting students.
With a flip of a switch or press of a button, Parents can have their child entertained for hours on end. Televisions and Tablets are the twenty-first century babysitters. The average child spends an astounding 7.5 hours per day on some form of technology (Rowan 2), when the recommend allotted amount of time should be no more than two hours (Kaneshiro 1). Technology is rapidly evolving, making limitless possibilities available for entertainment. This virtual “babysitter” enables the parents to devote all their time and effort into their work or engross in technology with limited amounts of distraction from the children. Although, the parents are able to have free time, excessive amounts of screen time is proven to be detrimental to their child’s health and overall well-being. Technology has changed children over the past ten years. Before technology children were playing outside, building forts, making up games, playing with real toys and not virtual. However, there was cable and internet, it worked very slow and there was no such thing as Google, Facebook, Youtube or Instagram. Today technology has changed children by having them become anti-social and disconnected from the world outside of them. Children today have learned to adapt to the technology around them, thus making it easier for them to be less active outdoors than before.
Technology has only been around for 20 years and has already inflicted pain on many. Especially those that are students and did not become used to the new style of teaching compared to the new style of teaching. Other time, parents use educational programs on the television to teach their children much quicker than having to sit down, and find way to explain to young children about certain things. The question to focus on is, does television good for the children? Millennial parents should know about how long hours of television viewing time will affect their children milestone development in a long run.
It is no secret that, in today’s society, everyone and everything is controlled electronically.
