Technology And Its Influence On American Society

In 2014, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) did a study on bullying and the found that 19.4% of all the students interviewed had been bullied at school. This may not seem very surprising, bullying has been going on for decades. Generations of men and women have come to fear the people who walk the halls, stealing lunch money from those weaker than them. However, it is interesting to note that 14.8% of that 19.4% had reported being cyber bullied. Unlike the standard physical bullying, cyberbullying is a slightly more recent development, but it has evolved to become much more deadly. It gives bullies a better tool for creating more widespread pain. The awareness for cyber bullying needs to increase and ultimately, cyberbullying needs to be abolished completely due to its destructive capabilities.

From the stone tools of the early humans to today’s smartphones, technology has influenced history and helped shape the world to its current form. As we know that HIPAA complaints are increasing as the use of technology is increasing in United States. Mobile devices are helpful when it comes to work. However, it all depend who is going to use it and in which way. It can be used to help the patient by and it can also exploit the patient. For example, before administering a drug nurses can use smartphone to know about a drug side effects and indication which is new in the market. On the other hand, nurse can take picture of the patient and patient’s information which looks “cool” according to the nurse and exposed patient information for her/his personal interest. According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, the complaint of HIPAA violation has reached 12,915 in 2013. This number is dramatically increasing every year. Honda states that “everyone in America likely has a bullying story, whether as a victim, bully, or as a witness.” Cyberbullying has become a major epidemic in the modern day world because everyone has access to the internet in some way. By taking an in depth look at cyberbullying, one can see just how urgent it is to stop it, because not only can it strike anywhere at any time, cyberbullying can also lead to suicide and cause serious mental health issues.

Imagine going to an amazing concert. It’s something someone would want to remember right? So, this person may grab out their phone, take a few pictures, record some videos, and tweet or something. But, are they really witnessing the true excitement of that concert? I don’t think so. Everyone is so sucked up in technology that we don’t take the time to notice the significance of life around us. It’s a shame that someone could miss out on so much because they were so intrigued by a video of a cat that their friend tagged them in. Impacts of Technology on American Society The American current growth rate in technology is so high as a result of the advancement taking place each day. Taking the credit for this progress is the extensive research programs conducted by researchers at universities, business, and non-profit organizations (Lin and David 5). Currently, the human life and technology are inseparable, where the American society has a cyclical co-dependence on technology. Apparently, the technological advancement and expansion impact differently on the American society, where these impacts can either be positive or negative bringing about a platform for an argument.

First of all, Technology has affected people in the society by people being on there phone all the time. People’s eyes get messed up from looking at and being on the whole day. On the positive side of phone they do help with math and reflexes on the games kids play. Electronics can distant family members in a household. People in America’s society don’t talk face to face anymore. When people talk to each other they should put their phones down. 80% of America’s people think that it is a waste of time just to down face to face and talk to another person. A lot of people get frustrated when people pull out their phones as soon as they start talking.

Technological advances have certainly entered this era to facilitate people’s lives. There is no doubt that some new technology has been created to help operate or effectively manage time in a way that would be beneficial to humans. Technology significantly helps a number of people. A group that greatly benefits with the advances of technology is teenagers. Teens constantly use computers for schoolwork, networking, or knowing anything they want to know with a simple use of their fingertips. Furthermore, with the advances it is no longer needed to leave the household to run an errand such as going out to pay a bill or do some shopping. As technology advances and enters the life of mostly all humans many begin to question how healthy these technological advances truly are. A couple of decades ago kids spent their time outside playing with their friends by the same token with items that did not require the use of electricity. Kids and adolescents would dedicate at least a part of their day to reading books and gaining knowledge from there instead of social media. Distinctively today’s adolescents instead of reading books will go on the internet for a summary and inform themselves in less than 5 minutes, spent their time inside playing video games or on their cellphones allowing technology to be the only thing they know and rely on to have fun or be informed. While cyberbullying affects each child differently, there has been a clear correlation between victims and non-victims and their self-esteem. In one study, bullied victims had less self-esteem than those who were not bullied online. Additionally, it was reported that victims of cyberbullying were thirty percent more likely to think about committing suicide (Cyberbullying Research Center, 2012). With the lack of parent supervision, it was found that those who spent more than three hours per school day on social networks were 110% more at risk to be a cyberbully victim as compared those who do not spend as much time online (Gilkerson, 2012). What may be worse is the fact that majority of those bullied online do not tell their parents or an adult about what occurred. Despite the fact that most adolescents state that bullying occurs more offline then online, cyberbullying is still a real and large threat to the youth of America (Lenhart, 2007).

We use technology in almost every aspect of our daily lives; it is how we stay connected in this fast-paced world. Technology provides many benefits, but it has the potential to destroy many people. With technology use on the rise, bullying has taken a new, more destructive form. Cyberbullying, as defined by the Cyberbullying Research Center, is the willful and repeated harm inflicted through the medium of electronic text (qtd. in Chait). Cyberbullying is a serious problem and has serious consequences.
