From the ancient world to modern civilization, Greek civilization has left its impact on our world throughout history. From Greece’s rise and fall, its social, political, and cultural contributions, without the Greeks we would not be as advanced as we are today. The western world was highly influenced by the Greeks, gaining ideas about art, architecture, philosophy, and science.

The strong and unconquerable army in both cultures ensured phenomenal military conquests and the protection of the state. In the Greek culture, the army is very important. For example, in Sparta from the age of seven boys leave their family and live in barracks with soldiers in order to prepare for the military life. In Macedonia, army is also very important. For instance, boys are trained to endure harsher things in order to be ready for war. The military techniques of the respective armies in those two cultures demonstrate that nothing is worth more than military success. In fact, the special technic used by Spartans (the phalanx), usually ensured their victory for example against Persians. Macedonia army also have a particular technique

What is a peninsula in Europe featuring over 2,000 islands? This is no other than Greece. It has been geographically shaped by tectonic plates as well as grabens occurring previously in its age. Consequently, the land is rugged and hilly. In addition to geography, the Greeks have contributed immensely to our world’s culture. In Greece, you can find sculptures, such as the intricately designed Discobolus. Arts and mathematics have also bloomed there due to people such as Archimedes, Aristotle, and Euclid. Throughout this essay, Greece’s location, shape, size, surrounding countries, enclosing bodies of water, landforms, climate, vegetation, as well as government, will be portrayed.

The civilians of Ancient Greece had to be resourceful. Most civilizations had rivers to channel, irrigate, and predict. Ancient Greece is a series of islands. This means that the people of Ancient Greece had to learn to live on the ocean. They had to deal with being more vulnerable to land attacks as they were used to battling with ships. And they also had to deal with huge ocean storms. These storms could destroy a new society with no notice. (Acrobatic, 2014)

     Conformity, on a daily basis we conform to the social norms set forth before us by our friends, family and past experiences. Group cohesiveness (the desire to which one has to be in and is attracted to the group) greatly increases conformity. Enter Greek life.      

For this report, I will write a reflection concerning society in ancient Greece. I will include information pertaining to the lives of those who lived in ancient Greece and what their daily lives consisted of. Social issues and political philosophy will also be discussed along with other material that is considered significant to ancient Greek society. This concludes my introduction. When did Ancient Greece exactly flourish and how?

In 490 BC, Greece defeated the Persian invaders at the famous Marathon. And in 480, Persian warriors suffered heavy losses in the Salamis. These battles have confirmed the mighty military power of Greece. Under the reign of King Alexander the Great of Macedonia, the Greeks had extensive expansions to Egypt, Persia and India. His conquests led to the settlement and dominance of the Greeks in many remote and influential Greek cultures that were more widespread than ever. This period is called the Greek Period. Later, when the Roman Empire was established and became mighty, Greece became a Roman province but the cultural influences of ancient Greece were maintained and developed.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity of taking part in a program called Greek Summer, run by the American Farm School in Thessaloniki, Greece. This program takes its participants on a vast physical and personal journey throughout Greece, including hands-on lessons on agriculture, a home stay in a rural Greek village, and a tour around the most important archeological sites of the country. It was on odyssey of personal examination and growth, as well as a unique social experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best of ways.

Greece was a beautiful country of the arts. Ancient Greece’s time was around 2000 to 30 B.C.E. Ancient Greece’s people had to deal with mountainous lands, making it hard to live there. Though these causes were against them, they survived and had beautiful and dramatic plays, arts, and architecture. Greece had many wonderful and terrible leaders, and took over much of the ancient world.. Greece had a very rich religion, counting up thousands of gods. Greece also was known for their arts, from pottery to dramatic plays.

Though there were numerous factors involved in the fall of tyranny, the main cause for the Greek’s tyrannic end was the actions made by the Aristocrats. Tyrants desired to take away control from the Aristocrat’s and gain their power. They were able to come into a place of absolute rule by gaining favor from the Greeks. The majority of the Greeks were poor, so tyrants catered to the poverty-stricken in order to be supported (“What is Tyranny?”). Tyrants provided for their people by building structures like aqueducts that could be used to greatly benefit the poor by supplying a vital source needed for survival -clean water (“Tyranny”).

There were many different forms of government in the ancient world. From direct democracy, to republicanism, empires and dynasties, there was a lot of variety. Still, there was no one form of government in the ancient world that was better than the rest. One of the forms of government in the ancient world was dynasties.

There are many contributions the ancient Greeks have made that the modern world is currently using. The Greeks were exceedingly influential towards various societies and social standards, as well as education. The ancient Greeks were an unusually superstitious civilization; they told stories and believed in different gods and monsters to explain or try to comprehend how the world works. They relied heavily on these myths until some began questioning these stories/beliefs, which is one of the reasons or causes in the development of philosophy, a main contribution the Greeks made. Besides philosophy, they also shaped democracy, science, and theatre, which are the most commonly used in our society today. Of course there are much more influences

Following the Second World War, Greece was plunged into decades of strife and political turmoil. The Kingdom of Greece falls somewhere in the middle of the superpower confrontation during the Cold War. Originally, Stalin and Churchill had agreed to let Britain run a non-communist Greece, yet the nation struggled between the Western and Eastern blocs and their respective superpowers’ influence [1]. This struggle originates from the German and Italian occupation of the Kingdom of Greece during the Second World War. During this occupation, many resistance groups of different ideologies began to emerge. Following the war, while the Greek government was still taking refuge in Egypt, the occupational government dissolved, leaving

one essential conviction, expressed in the word democracy itself: that power should be in the hands of the people. Although democracy today has been slightly inefficient in this idea, with the wealthy, elite class challenging this right, “it nevertheless claims for itself a fundamental validity that no other kind of society shares….” To completely understand the structure of democracy, one must return to the roots of the practice itself, and examine the origins in ancient Greece, the expansion in the Roman Empire, and how these practices combined make what we recognize as today’s democratic government.
