Many parents tend to have big culturally influenced goals for their children and most of the time the child has different goal or dream. Just like how culture had a big influence in Amy Tan’s short story “Two Kinds”. Tans write on the experience of a young Chinese girl and her mother’s expectations for her. In this this paper I will explain how this story was heavily influenced by Tan’s cultural background, by using textual evidence and making connections with Tan’s cultural background to grasp a better understanding of the story. “The American Dream” is what many people desire and even travel from across the globe for. All seeking an equal opportunity to achieve success and wealth through hard work. Just like in “Two Kinds” the mother came all the way from china to achieve the American dream. In my understanding Tan wrote this story from her cultural experiences and for the many other people who experience this with their parents. Most people have had an argument with their parents but what makes their argument significant is the fact that her mother had plans for her, but she had different plans. Tan points out how many people might even go along with it to keep their parents proud as she states “In fact, in the beginning I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so. I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, and I tried each one on for size.” (641). This all shows how she grew older and matured and realized this isn’t what she wants. This very tough moment for the young girl because she knows her mother won’t be happy about it. For instance, during an argument the mother even states “Only two kinds of daughters, she shouted in Chinese. Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind!” (645). This is a very important part of the story because it shows how much respect the mother
