Why does Holden continuously judge people based on their physical appearance? Could this be a projection of his insecurities or a reflection of his mental health?

Chapter 20 of Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ often expresses the common phrase “you should never judge a book by it’s cover”, or in this case, “you should never judge a person by the color of their skin.” In this chapter, Tom Robinson’s trial continues and draws to an end. One of the main sections that occurs in this chapter is when Atticus begs the jury to ‘do their duty’. While he delivers his final statement, he uses a foreshadowing technique. In simpler terms, he tells the jury a line of events that he believes is true.
Holden is in a cab on his way to Ernie’s and after he asks the driver with Holden. When Holden asks why he is “sore” about it, the cab driver denies being upset. Holden seems to constantly anger people throughout the story due to his blunt way of addressing topics and his inability to see the positive side of things. The cab driver on the other hand, is clearly upset, but is instead choosing to be passive aggressive by denying his anger. I do not like when people are passive aggressive. I would much rather someone talk to me directly and maturely if they are upset.
There is hardly anyone that hasn’t had to grow up. Growth is central to every character in a story, but “Through the Tunnel” and To Kill a Mockingbird amplify this; the loss of innocence and coming of age is central to the entire story. Both “Through the Tunnel” and To Kill a Mockingbird’s main conflict test the characters (Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird and Jerry in “Through the Tunnel”) as they grow up in the face of adversity.
Lord of the Flies Reader’s Response #1 In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there are many instances of civilization and savagery. Most predominantly, an intense moment where “a thing crawlies out of the forest… and already its blood was staining the sand,” savagery is portrayed (152). Although flashes of savagery are illustrated before this point in the novel, this is the most intense and shocking moment yet. Simon is killed.
Before the events of Simon’s talk with the lord of the flies, Jack and Ralph had gone separate ways from each other. Jack had left frustrated after Ralph was still accepted as chief of the boys. Jack with his followers found and killed a swine in the forest. They speared the head of the pig and left it as an offering for the beast that the hunters worshiped. Golding had special plans for the head of the pig and Simon. In this passage from Lord of the Flies, Golding shows that savagery will overtake civilization when fear and anger is spreading among the people of civilization.
Lord of the Flies Passage Commentary The passage beginning with “Piggy handed Ralph his glasses…”, which is written in the novel Lord of the Flies, portrays the progression of the novel’s story line. At first, the children are struggling to start a fire; they become desperate to light a fire for warmth and safety. However, eventually by some miraculous way, the wood lights on fire, causing a relieved tone in the children. Golding incorporates sensory image and repetition of an action to show how the children are struggling.
