Taking a Look at the Ku Klux Klan

The most famous white supremacy group in American history is the Ku Klux Klan (a.k.a. The KKK) and aimed to “cleanse” the American population of black people and was used to launch attacks on black people and the people that advocated and supported their rights. The group was founded in 1865 in Tennessee by 6 members of the Confederate army and gained an immense amount of followers over the next 80 years. At its peak, the group reached around 6 million members on a global scale, extending the racism and hate worldwide. The activities of the hate-group became extremely violent as they started cross burnings, executions and mass parades to advocate their anti-civil rights movement. Eventually, they also started targeting other minorities in America, such as Jewish people, who have also faced a large struggle for rights and freedoms throughout history. Eventually, the people started to fight back against the KKK and although it still continues today as a group with an extremely small amount of members, numbers were drastically reduced, their hate crimes subsided and the black people of America once again started to regain their rights and

As a result, in 1867, Klan’s from all over the South gathered in Tennessee and gave former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest full control of the Klan (The History Channel, 2005). Later interviewed by a Charleston newspaper, Forrest boasted that the member count exceeded 40,000 men in Tennessee alone and over 550,000 in all the Southern states (The Charleston, 1868). Never achieving organization, local chapters continued to go about their business, settling things in a way they deemed fit, this, in turn, would be one of the reasons for the decline of the Klan.

Life for African Americans in the United States has never been easy. First they were enslaved and later became free. Lastly they just needed the same rights as everyone else. The Klu Klux Klan wasn’t going to let that happen. The Klan wanted to stop all political and economical equality for African Americans. They were violent and terrorized all African Americans and anyone who tried to help them acquire equality. The Klu Klux Klan is a harsh and is extremely racist. They had a part in economic and social problems in the United States in the late 1860s (History.com Staff).

One of the Ku Klux Klan’s mains purposes was to protect the way they live from African Americans, Jews, and Catholics. They had the biggest impact on African Americans. The discrimination and the violence of the group was well known through different communities. The Klan was also known for crucial beatings and murders against the black population. They tried to emphasize that the blacks were a subpar race.

The KKK was originally founded as a social club for past Confederate soldiers. In 1865, the KKK grew into a terrorist association. The KKK had racist activity in the form of riots in the South aiming directly at the blacks but also targeted the Republicans. The KKK killed 46 people, wounded 70 and a large quantity of churches and schools were burned.

They are a group that terrorizes many, such as gays, minorities, Catholics, and Jews. Due to their opposing opinion on the Civil Rights Movement for African Americans, they have used major acts of violence. Some of the things they have done consisted of rape, bombings, arson, and lynching. All in all, the KKK has been a group known to intimidate and use fear mongers to influence the public and try to achieve their goal of being in control. The Klan had tried to get into the minds of activists and African Americans, and made them feel inferior by any means necessary.

Frustrated confederate soldiers made their way back home after losing the war that they had been fighting for four years. These men formed vigilante groups, attacking black people. While soldiers did this, wealthier men who had avoided fighting in the war formed agricultural and police clubs for the same purpose; both groups soon took shape and evolved into one large group, known as the Ku Klux Klan and Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest became the first leader, known as the Grand Wizard. The name Ku Klux Klan is derived from the Greek word, Kyklos, meaning circle. The Ku Klux Klan, often shortened to the KKK, was founded in Tennessee in 1866 and grew to be one of the most feared terrorist groups in the United States, before dying off in 1869, but later being revived in 1915 (History.com Staff). The Ku Klux Klan negatively impacted the Reconstruction period through terror, intimidating Republican voters, and killing Republican officials.

The Ku Klux Klan roots its beliefs in that they are supreme. The Klan believes that “blacks are subhuman, do not have souls, and therefore do not deserve equality before the law, much less American citizenship.”

The Ku Klux Klan was a politically and racially motivated group that discouraged and frustrated attempts at racial equality (Bowles 2011). They were against all equality for anyone who supported a Union or was black. They were in control of the Southern states and they ran amuck abusing and murdering anyone they felt would threaten their way of life and the local and state governments sat back and supported their efforts to keep the blacks enslaved at all costs.
