The Earth’s biosphere is considered to be the most inclusive layer on the planet; simply put, the biosphere is where life happens. What makes the biosphere so exceptional is the fact that there is no record of life existing anywhere else in space. All of the organisms that inhibit the biosphere impact it in some way. However, humans have the largest impact on the biosphere through the means of industrialization, reproduction, and consumption. As with all of the other organisms inhibiting the biosphere, humans have basic needs in order to thrive. We need habitats, protection, reproductive success, and sustenance. However, unlike other organisms, we have proclivities that span beyond the essential tools needed to survive. We have the unique gift of insight, and with it, the ability to innovate beyond the parameters of any other species on the planet. From the use of fire to the invention of the smartphone, there is a continuum of technological advances.
In today’s industrialized societies, these technological conveniences have become vital in order for one to compete for resources. With this dependency, comes a cost, and it threatens the very system that supports life on earth. In North America, 700,000 tons of air pollution is released into the atmosphere every day (Biology). This stems from the use of fuel-burning transportation, product manufacturing, and mining. There are two main classes of air pollution, particles and gases. The discharge of elements into the
“March of Dimes” charity was in news in November ’15, because of an alleged fraud committed by one of its employees named Ms. Karima Manji. Karima Manji has been working with MOD since 2005. She has been handling the portfolio of property manager and used to look after MOD’s non-profit residences. She is alleged to have used “various means” to siphon funds from the charity, including forging invoices and expense claims, and funnelling money into a false March of Dimes bank account. She has been charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by a crime over $5,000 and presenting a forged document. She also served as the executive director of Kingsmere retirement living in Alliston and has been placed on administrative leave after being charged by Toronto police of allegedly defrauding MOD of $0.8 Mn. Officials at MOD has confirmed of ongoing investigation into the incident and those of Kingsmere retirement living have stated that “Manji’s employment is not linked to her involvement with MOD’s”.
I read the book Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. This book is about being strong through rough times and trusting yourself. In the beginning of the book Kira’s Mom passed away. This was not her first loss, because when she was a tyke her Dad had been killed by beasts.
Throughout the 20th and 21st century race relations have been a substantial issue. Some issues have went through trial, and others have not. Even today in society, race related matters are still continuing. One is being targeted for the color of their skin, the traditional clothes they wear, and the principals they believe in. Many trials have been brought to court but there are an abundance of other situations that have not been brought to the eyes of others.
Although thought to be “not a big problem” and “under control” by most people, pollution is making its way in being a serious and an unforgiving threat to society. Pollution a topic everyone hears and knows exists. What they don’t know is how serious of a problem it is already becoming. Many health issues are being reported now that are linked to air pollution and even the most severe weather places have encountered are linked to air pollution also. By society, not fully being aware of the true threat that pollution is making, it will only become a growing threat that they will be encountering.
From the birth of the first single celled organism, to the first dated appearance of the neanderthal, life has been constantly evolving to achieve a greater sense of survival and adaptation. We as human beings have become a prime example of the evolutionary process surpassing the predators which once preyed upon us to becoming the top of the food change. Although our evolution is an amazing feat we have used the knowledge of billions of years of evolution to create something in which blows our evolutionary process into shambles, that something being technology. As our brains developed to the adapt to our surroundings, we became more intelligent and more creative. This gave leeway to our instincts to create. Since the
Humans, like all other species, exploit their surroundings for the resources they need to survive. Our current exploitation of the world, however, is greater than those of most species. There are many reasons for this exploitation but we will focus on one and that is our technology, which is used for various
When the air is contaminated by different types of harmful gases & particles ,then it is called air pollution .The addition of harmful chemicals to the atmosphere may be defined as the presence of one or more contaminants such as dust, fumes, gas, mist, odor, smoke or vapor in the atmosphere which may prove to be injurious to plant, animals and human life (Perkins, 1974).. The most serious air pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels, especially in internal-combustion engines(The American Heritage,2002).It means air is a transparent matter consisting of nitrogen & oxygen. may be defined as the presence of one or more contaminants such as dust, fumes, gas, mist, odor, smoke or vapor in the atmosphere which may prove to be injurious to plant, animals and human life (Perkins, 1974). In 2009, Johan Rockström (Stockholm Resilience Center) and a group of researchers from Europe, the U.S. and Australia, tried to identify the Earth-system processes and associated thresholds which, if crossed, could generate unacceptable environmental change . They found nine such processes for which they believe it is necessary to define planetary boundaries. Their analysis suggested that three of the Earth-system processes — rate of biodiversity loss, climate change, interference with the nitrogen cycle have already transgressed their boundaries (Rockström J, Steffen W, Noone K, Persson Å, Chapin FS, 2009).So, we have to reduce these kind of pollution at any case . in a
An average human consumes about 11,000 liters of air in a day. Not only are we breathing in natural gases such as oxygen and nitrogen, but we are also inhaling other matters that are potentially dangerous to our health. These air pollutants that we breathe in are divided into two separate categories: primary and secondary pollutants. Primary pollutants are emitted in the form in which they were produced. This includes: smoke, inorganic gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and greenhouse gases. Secondary pollutants are primary pollutants interact with another pollutant in the air. This includes ozone, smog, and acid rain. All of these that were listed are the forms of air pollution that humans are continually exposed to every single day. Air pollution not only affects our natural environment and economy, but also our health whether we realize it or not. There is however, a big difference in levels of air pollution around the world. The first world country of United States has a much better air quality than other countries such as the third world country of Pakistan. This paper will be explaining what air pollution is, explain the significant impact of air pollution on our respiratory system, comparing and contrasting between the two countries of the United States and Pakistan, and discuss ways to prevent or alleviate the problem.
The terrestrial biosphere has an important role in the carbon cycle (Schimel, 1995); the one third of the total CO2 that comes from human activity in the atmosphere is absorbed by the terrestrial carbon sink (IPCC, 2013). The Kyoto Protocol included the last years the terrestrial carbon sources and sinks into emissions reduction because is that part of the global C cycle which can most directly be managed (IGBP Terrestrial Carbon Working Group, 1998).
Unfortunately, the air has been polluted through various activities including emissions from industrial and manufacturing activities, burning fossil fuels, household and farming chemicals, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide among others. Although there have been many attempts across the world to solve the problem of air pollution, it is evidently clear that these measures including the state and federal laws are not enough to end this problem without everyone’s involvement. At present, many nations appear to strive towards ensuring that the air is clean. However, because of continuous industrialization and necessary urban development, the atmosphere progressively experiences increase in air pollution. Nations as well as the entire world will be able to reduce pollution levels if not eliminated to reduce the burden of disease such as stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic and acute respiratory sicknesses including asthma if they are aware and educated about the causes and the health effects of air pollution.
The complexity of Earth and the fine-tuned factors that make it up not only creates an environment that supports life - but intelligent life. This lends you (the intelligent person) the ability to think about the age-old question: How exactly did we get here?
The purpose of this paper is to find the correlation between air pollution and society’s responsibility to promote a cleaner safer environment for its citizens. My research question is: How can society help keep the air we breathe safe? There are so many chemicals and other vapors that are emitted into the air that it becomes a chore for people with respiratory problems, i.e., asthma, to breathe without some assistance and in some cases of older individuals, carry an oxygen tank daily. Can some of these health issues be prevented if we managed our air pollution better?
Pollution has been a growing problem since the rapid evolution of technology after the Industrial Revolution, which contaminated Earth with its byproducts of harmful chemicals and an ever growing pile of trash. From harmful chemicals in the air to plastic floating in the ocean, pollution has contaminated the very world we have been living in, slowly creating a bleak future for the new generations to come. I was a young child, unaware of the danger of just breathing the air and how dirty the world has become over the last few hundred years. Eventually, a life-threatening event changed that view forever and urged me to take a stance on the topic of pollution, changing my views and having a huge impact on my future. Before long, I had become an advocate of preventing the pollution of our wonderful home, Earth.
The concentration of pollution on Earth is rising at alarming rates as the burning of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase from human activities. Fossil fuels are burned to heat homes, power cars, provide electricity and in manufacturing. The high dependency on fossil fuels is increasing the rate of climate change “the industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 400 parts per million in the last 150 years” (NASA). Human interaction and industrial manufacturing has almost doubled the amount of carbon molecules and toxins in the air. Fuel emissions and pollution in the environment are negatively effecting the health of those exposed to it, because the gas emissions contain a large amount of toxic
Air pollution is the largest killer in the developing world, taking the lives of over 7 million people annually. While air pollution does take place in America daily, we are not exposed to the high levels of PM 2.5, PM10, and other pollutants that developing countries are. It is very much real, and a global challenge that affects us, as a world as whole, causing global warming, and emission of greenhouse gases. In America we have air regulations in effect, along with other developed countries like Canada, and France, in an attempt to regulate the amount of air pollution released in the air. While we are not a perfect nation, or the most Earth friendly country, we, the population, do not consider the long term effects of air pollution. Many people living in developing countries are basically forced to live in these harsh conditions because of how poor they and their country are; the lack of enforcement on air regulations contributes strongly to the problem. This results in smog filled cities, poor living conditions, millions of premature deaths, and many affected by the heavy amount of air pollution that is shamelessly forced into the air.
