To start off my paper, I want to make something clear. There are two types of herpes viruses. HSV-1 is the type that usually causes cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth. HSV-2 is the type that commonly causes genital herpes. The virus spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact. HSV-2 is very common and highly contagious, whether or not you have an open sore (Aurelius, p. 3).
Genital Herpes is more commonly caused by HSV-2 but is known to be caused by HSV-1. Oral Herpes is known to be caused by both variations of the virus but most commonly by HSV-1. This sexually transmitted disease is more likely to go from men to women, than women to men. Having multiple sexual partners are raise the risk factors as well. Each sexual partner that is engaged with raises your risk for being exposed to any sexually transmitted disease.
Modes of Transmission
HSV-1 is usually passed from person to person by kissing, or having contact with and infected persons sore. HSV-1 can also spread from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex (fellatio, cunnilingus, analingus). If this happens, the strain can change and become a case of genital herpes. HSV-2 is most often passed by vaginal sex and anal sex. Although, just as HSV-1 can infect the genitals and cause genital herpes, HSV-2 can pass from one person 's genitals to another person 's mouth, resulting in oral herpes (Barnabas, para 3).
HSV-2 cannot survive long on a non-living surface, so there is no real risk of getting it from a surface. Herpes is most commonly spread by direct skin to skin contact. Unlike a flu virus that you can get through the air, herpes spreads by direct contact, that is, directly from the site of infection to the site of contact. For example, if you have a cold sore and kiss someone, you can transfer the virus to their mouth.
