Symbols In The Shawshank Redemption

The stone has been addressed in the story multiple times whether it was to symbolize peace or vandalism. The stone shows both aspects of Reef’s life, and both sides have been different, but were involved with the stone. In the novel the fundamental aspects of Reef’s life revolved around his vigorous actions or the emotional states he has went through associating with his grandma. “ He liked what Reef could do, liked thinking of himself as living rock, liked pretending that it was possible to protect those you loved.” (Aker, pg.35)

"The First Part Last" has many authoritative symbols. All people, no matter who they are, have symbols that represent them and how they have changed throughout their lifetime. Throughout Angela Johnson's book, the main character Bobby had many moments that alternated the way he thought, saw, and reacted to things, and these each moment had a symbol that represented it.

The primary image, which is a rock hammer, represents the motifs of friendship and hope that is displayed throughout the film. The rock hammer is the first item that Andy, the protagonist, obtains from Red, who is also an inmate. This exchange between Red and Andy is the spark of their strong friendship. This friendship proved to be beneficial to Andy not only because he was able to obtain the resources, that he needed for his escape, from Red but he also had a partner to keep him from going insane, in a brutal place such as Shawshank. Based on the novel “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank” by Stephen King; Shawshank Redemption is about two prison inmates that form a friendship and their experience in the prison for 19 years. There was a heartwarming scene where Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding finally made it out of parole and is finally viewing life as a second chance of hope, with the help of his partner Andy Dufresne. In the speech, Red finally got out of jail and took a bus to Texas to cross over the border to Mexico. There are ethos, pathos and logos towards Red’s new view in hope and reconnects to what Andy has told him, “Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying.”

In the novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the reader follows the life of Andy Dufresne, who was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and a golf pro. Author Stephen King, who is known for his simpler, conversation esque writing, describes Andy’s experiences and attempt to escape from Shawshank Prison where he is being held. Red, Andy’s most valuable friend while in prison, is also in prison for killing his wife, but in contrast to Andy, he actually did it. Andy is constantly denied his freedom for parole or when evidence arises proving his innocence because of his role running the illegal money laundering scheme for Warden Norton. Throughout the novella, both characters display moments of similar, but also at times vastly different, levels of hope. King uses the way characters, such as Red and Andy, view hope as either a means of escape or simply futile in the novella to show how the circumstances surrounding a tragedy or difficult situation change a character’s mindset on hope and in turn dictates the actions they use to cope.

Award-winning and movie-prone novels incorporate many literary devices, and these methods empower the story to a new level. In this case, one of these devices is symbolism, and The Book Thief is an extraordinary example that contains symbolism. There are three overlapping symbols in The Book Thief, and these symbols are bread, an accordion, and books. The theme of hope is both displayed in the book and film when Red talks about Andy’s demeanor while in prison. Red states how prison has not changed Andy and how he wears his freedom “like an invisible coat”......“He never developed the walk that men get when their day is over and they are going back to their cells for another endless night,” (King 72). Symbols serve many purposes in this story. Poe uses symbols all throughout the story to represent death. Poe’s use of the seven rooms, the clock, and the stranger helps to teach the reader that nothing can escape death. By using these symbols, Poe portray the idea that death can’t be escaped.

Symbolism is a necessary literary tool that allows a reader to view a novel through symbols that often have deeper and significant meaning. The author Ray Bradbury of Fahrenheit 451 exemplifies symbolism throughout the novel to help reinforce the major themes of the book. For example, the titles of the chapters are all representations of how symbols are used throughout the novel, such as “The Hearth and The Salamander”, “The Sieve and The Sand”, and “The Burning Bright.” The symbols of fire, childhood memories and rebirth help the reader understand the author’s intentions and significance through literature. The first part of the novel, “The Hearth and The Salamander” uses a combination of symbols that refer to the title of the chapter.

Directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption tells the Story of Andy Dufrane, a man who has been wrongly convicted of murder and must endure life inside the harsh and corrupt Shawshank prison, but despite this he never loses hope of finding freedom. Foreshadowing is used heavily within Shawshank redemption. Foreshadowing of death, foreshadowing of escape, foreshadowing of release. Andy Dufresne escaped prison. If you watch very closely and you pay attention you can figure this out before it happens. There are many clues throughout the movie that are relatively unnoticeable. Such as Andy’s rock hammer.

The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally, symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden’s salvation and Andy’s escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. This book is filled with symbolism from the beginning to the end. Every object referenced in the book was significantly symbolic. In the beginning, the scene is set at a giant tree outside of a church, which clearly symbolizes the religious and personal growth that will occur to Santiago. Later, Santiago works at crystal shop trying to make money to go home. His job in the beginning was to clean all the crystal objects. Crystals symbolize clarity and he cleaning the crystal objects in order to make them clean, therefore, if this is connected to his personal journey, he is bringing clarity of the situation to himself and in the and decides to continue the journey rather than give up. One of the more debatable symbols in this book is the desert. To some it may symbolize the hardship and tragedy due to its climate, but to others it may be a journey with rewards at the end. In the film, “The Shawshank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont, symbolism was used to highlight the main idea of holding onto hope. Darabont has effectively used different symbols throughout the film to convey the themes of hope and freedom in Shawshank. “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” This quote said by Andy Dufresne in a letter to Red shows that Shawshank was portrayed as a place of hopelessness at the start.
