Colors can be used to set the mood of something. Different colors have different meanings that represent different things. L. Frank Baum, used colors to set the mood in such things like the setting, in his novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of OZ”. He used colors such as blue, grey, green, white, and etc. These colors have very deep meanings that can mean very different things.
The color grey is used in the beginning of the novel. It can represent an abundance of things such as dark, steamy, old or etc. In the beginning of the novel, the main character Dorothy, shows us how the color grey is used to set a dark and gloomy mood. Unlike blue, this city is covered with the color green. Green usually represents money and green, which is why the city is called emerald, which is a bright green beautiful stone. The lines, “They walked over a pavement of the same green marble, and where the blocks were joined together were rows of emeralds, set closely, and glittering in the brightness of the sun. The window panes were of green glass; even the sky above the City had a green tint, and the rays of the sun were green.” and “Many shops stood in the street, and Dorothy saw that everything in them was green. Green candy and green pop corn were offered for sale, as well as green shoes, green hats, and green clothes of all sorts. At one place a man was selling green lemonade, and when the children bought it Dorothy could see that they paid for it with green pennies.”, shows how much green means to them. As I said before, the color green refers to greed, so when Dorothy and her friends present the wizard with their wishes, he says he will only pursue them dreams if they kill a horrible witch from another country.
