Symbolism in First They Killed My Father In different cultures around the world clothing plays an enormous part in people's everyday lives. In the book, First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung, Ung’s, childhood was ripped away from her when the Khmer Rouge marched into Cambodia and started killing people. Loung Ung’s family evacuated their city with only the things that they could carry. A major symbol that plays a role throughout the entire book is clothing. For example, in Loung Ung’s bag she carries a red dress that her mother made for the Cambodian New Year. This dress was special because that was the only day of the year that she got to wear a bright color, such as red, and this was her first year that she was going to wear red. Ung
