SWOT Analysis of Health Care Organizations Provide a brief summary of the location, services, and activities of your chosen health care organization.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital is located at One Barnes-Jewish Hospital Plaza in St. Louis Missouri. It is the largest hospital in the state and employs the most people of any other company in the surrounding area. Many patients’ lives have been saved and improved, due to the staff’s cutting edge innovative ideas for treatment. The rest of the services offered at Barnes-Jewish Hospital are all equally stunning in the quality of care provided to patients. Patrons can be sure to receive the most up-to-date care and will be attended by some of the best staff in the country. The hospital is dedicated in extending their outreach programs and providing services to the surrounding community (Barnes-Jewish Hospital, 1997-2012). Describe its service area in terms of current population, future population, competitors, and major environmental influences that will affect its operations 5 years from now. Barnes-Jewish Hospital services a mostly white population. Whites make up a massive 77.7% of the hospital’s service area with the minorities of African Americans at 18.4%, 3.5% for Asians, 2.3% Hispanic, and the remaining 1.6% is a mix of other races. A mere 5% of the patients who go to Barnes-Jewish require an interpreter. According to the 2010 Census, females make up 51.6% of St. Louis’ population compared to 50.7% in the United States overall and males make up 48.4% of St. Louis compared to the U.S. average of 49.3% (Stlrcga.org, 2012). Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBS) is considered the largest and most experienced insurance company in Illinois. BCBS was founded in order to provide healthcare to teachers at a reasonable cost. It services over 7 million people. Its mission is “To promote the health and wellness of members and communities through accessible, cost-effective, quality health care” (Blue Cross Blue Shield, 2012). Blue Cross Blue Shield provides its customers with affordable health care. The parent company is Blue Cross Blue Shield Association its signature tag is “Creating Healthier Communities,” BCBS does not have any investors and the customers are considered the investors of the company and essentially who BCBS answers to. This is an important factor because they do not have to keep investors interest in the forefront of decision making, but rather they have the interest of their client in mind. (Blue Cross Blue Shield, 2012) In 2013 the Chicago based company reported profits of 684.3 million dollars. The company employees over 17,000 people. “Blue Shield of Illinois fell well below the $1 billion mark for the first time since 2009, in part because the insurance giant is setting aside money to offset expected losses from the troubled rollout of Obamacare” (Wang, 2014). Despite this setback it continues to expand over various parts of the United States. BCBS
A vital part of the strategic planning process is the (SWOC) analysis. SWOC stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Challenges. This information can be used to create ideas for strategic interventions that can shape and guide organizational decisions and actions designed to create public value (Bryson, 2004, pg. 124). Strategic planning is used to solve important issues within organizations. It can help organizations build on strengths and take advantage of major opportunities while overcoming or minimizing weaknesses and serious challenges (Bryson, 2004, pg. 27). Stakeholders and employees can provide detailed information for an SWOC analysis.
The early years of the Walgreens organization focused on expanding the footprint of the operation. (Wagner & Orvis, 2013) To support this expansion Walgreens used a “command and control” strategy as a means of exercising leadership and communicating with employees. (Wagner & Orvis, 2013) As the competitive landscape began to change, Walgreens recognized that it too needed a makeover. (Wagner & Orvis, 2013) New competition entered the market such as mail order pharmacies, big box retailer pharmacies, and internet options such as Google and Amazon were selling the same products as Walgreens. SWOT analysis has been identified as a defective tool used in the strategic planning due to its unsystematic and its non-quantitative nature that which does not have a predictive power. The Meta-SWOT has been introduced as an alternative because it does not consider market as one of the major determinants of the environment, but gives an opportunity in the resources and the potential in establishing the competitive advantage. Wal-Mart is a company which has been active and successful for over 50 years now. Wal-Mart is a retail company which distributes goods and service through its stores and online as well. The company vision states that “To be the best retailer in the hearts and minds of consumers and employees” (Ahmadi et al. 2016). The Wal-Mart mission states that “Saving people money so they can live better” (Ahmadi et al. 2016). Despite its success to implement some of its goals and objectives, the company has some weakness which has been slowing down the productivity and expansion rate. The company has been using the functional and hierarchy leadership structures which have been contributing to the company’s problems.
Sam Walton opened the first Walmart in 1962. He was inspired by the success of his previous dime store business and was driven to bring more opportunity and value to his customers. Offering lower prices and exceptional service led to great success. The company went public in 1970. Walton attributed the rapid growth and success of Walmart to his associates who offered customers a shopping experience that kept them coming back. As the stores grew, Walton added new approaches, technologies, and new store formats (Sam's Club and the Walmart Supercenter). Walton’s desire to offer lower prices while increasing value to customers, set a standard for the company that lives on today (Walmart 1).

Beyond the hands of physicians, patients receive healing in the form of art, which is made possible by the hospital’s Holistic Healing Committee. The C.A.R.E. Channel and an artistry gift program, “Healing Through Art,” are two patient-focused initiatives at The Jewish Hospital.
