“Sweatshops still make your clothes” is an article written by Jake Blumgart.
Blumgart’s article speaks about how the owners of sweatshops treat their workers. The article suggests that workers in sweatshops are treated as if they’re slaves with little pay and long hours. It also shows how many people buy their clothes without knowing where it came from. He explained how defeated it made a reporter named Charles Kernaghan feel who exposed the cruelty of this issue to the public on live television in an interview with Kathie Lee Gifford sixteen years ago. Kathie was a female television host who owned a clothing line sold in Walmart’s and who did not how her clothes were produced just like the rest of the public. However, Walmart and Hanes were not fazed by the matter and continued to do their business with Sweatshops as 75% of their apparel was still coming from such places. Based on the article, there have been fierce campaigns throughout the 1990’s to change the tune of these companies but today although now they admit to their responsibilities they do little to fulfill it. Improvements up till today have not been adequate because they say there aren’t laws in place to enforce them. Also, the International Labor Organization’s attempts to regulate fair labor and child labor practices have been difficult because there are no international laws in place to enforce them. The U.S is known for showing interest in enforcing its own remarkably weak labor laws. The student anti-sweatshop movement has helped a lot of university apparel to be made in ethically operated factories around the world such as Alta Gracia, Argentina. According to experts however, this is still ineffective without a larger organizing drive to focus change efforts.

Furthermore, from Jake Blumgart’s perspective, the issue on sweatshops still making our clothes is still a problem around the world. The student anti-sweatshop movement and campaigns that have been done throughout the years to try and help improve the world is a good thing. They hope to make sweatshops go out of business but the efforts just aren’t enough to make an effective change in the world. Until we can get the governments to help by making laws where the workers can’t be treated horribly and will be payed fairly there will not be any change in the
