Sustainability Final Draft Daniel Ha
When I first moved to Canada from South Korea, one of the first things I noticed was how slow and stagnant everything seemed in Canada compared to South Korea. I used to have to run to catch my subway competing with the crowd just to get to school, while here I can take my time and slowly get ready for school. It seems like everyone and everything is always being rushed and changing. Last year I went back to Korea and I couldn’t even recognize most of the buildings in my hometown, because all of them were taken down and replaced with brand new homes. While I think that most Canadians are patient and want to keep things the way they are, even the mere idea of sustainability seems to not even exist in Korea, since everything is changing and progressing constantly. Then I realized that there are still traditional holidays where most Koreans wear traditional clothing and follow the various traditional rules. I thought to myself, “how come these people, who are in constant rush

But since it is that important to us, many countries around the world still celebrate traditional things such as clothing or certain rules. The reason we sustain all this is because it is significant to us. At first, I thought sustainability wasn’t something that could be applied to anyone. It seemed impossible that South Koreans could have even the slightest relation to sustainability, as they were always shifting and changing. However, I came to a conclusion that sustainability for me is something that can be applied to anyone, since every single in this world has at least something that is important to them that they want to preserve. Whether it be the environment, economy or even something as small a cool-looking rock, we all have something that we find
One of the largest contributors to a high ecological footprint is related to personal transportation and the construction, maintenance and operations of buildings3. When more people are living in an area, the amount of energy and transportation needed decreases and so does the area’s ecological footprint3. This occurs because as walking increases, the amount of personal driving decreases. Another way Vancouver is working to reduce its ecological footprint is by protecting land in the “Green Zone”7.
Sustainability means having a forest that benefits as many people as possible right now, but will also be there to use in the future (cite). Sustainability is very important in B.C. as such a large portion of the province is covered in forests. This also makes the forest industry very important economically. These factors make sustainability of such a large forested land base very important for British Columbia in the present and the future. The BC government has made impressive bounds towards making its forests sustainable. With the efforts that BC’s government is making, it has made management of its forests sustainable. This paper will look at the forests of BC and the effective policies put in place that make the forests of the province
In order to compete effectively in the current global economy, modern companies need to successfully address three competitive challenges: technological, global and sustainability. Human resource management practices play an important role in supporting companies to address these competitive challenges. The focus of this paper is to analyze the current sustainability of Pratt & Whitney Canada, and to determine which human resource management practices enhance their competitive advantage both presently and in the future.
Canada is one of the developed nations in the world and with that comes a certain type of lifestyle that its citizens are accustomed to and often expect. This lifestyle is definitely not conscious of the environment at most times, however is trying to improve or at least find some kind of alternative to environmental problems that we can’t actually fix because they’ve become an important part of our everyday life. For that, our lifestyle has been measured by way of an ecological footprint and the results obviously haven’t been something to be proud of. Although there are many reasons why the ecological footprint of Canada is so high, one of the reasons is because of our excessive fossil fuel emissions from our cars, trucks, busses and planes.
Canadians do not need to rethink how they are currently treating our environment, as they have previously done that. Citizens have already made significant changes in how they live their lives, and Canada has seen an overall improvement in our environment situation. After the government began to certify certain merchandise as environmentally-friendly, Canadians have become more aware of the fact that Canada needs to be a more green country. They started buying these products, contributing to bettering Canada’s environment. Yet it may seem unrealistic that by buying more eco-friendly items, one is positively contributing to the environment, it is very true. The only people who are in charge of the environmental standards are the consumers. And
The reason this question has to be answered is simple, Canada sits at a very important junction in its evolution; does it continue to push forward to become an energy superpower or does it let the environmental conversation win, pushing forward instead with a clean energy agenda? This essay will hopefully drive this conversation forward.
Canada, with an increasing population, vehicles, government budget, and GDP shows a high standard of living. With a high standard of living, water, environment and food are of good quality. However, this does not mean it will not damage the environment. With the cost of a high standard of living, Canada seems to be damaging the environment for other costs. Conversely, a high GDP illustrates a the emergence of environmental science or technology reducing environmental problems in the near future.. Following the data based throughout several provinces, Canada contains a growing GDP, and an increasing environmental budget that helps the environment, which illustrates a prosperous economy that is investing into the environment. The growing amount
Despite its well-known Economic Action Plan and its continued emphasis on the need for more jobs and growth, it is still quite disturbing that the Canadian government gave a cold shoulder to environmental concerns in its 2014 budget. However, what has become clear in the last few years is that Canada is not committed to fighting climate change. In truth, it is not Canada that is uncommitted to the climate change cause. It is its Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, who is blocking all efforts to put Canada at the forefront of climate change efforts . And Canada should be leading climate change initiatives because it is one of the largest emitters in the world, and it is also a rich
"Transitioning to a Cleaner Future, a Greener Economy" is exceptionally very much tended to by NDP in their platform by expressing that "Canada can no longer afford to stand on the sidelines when it comes to tackling catastrophic climate change and transitioning to a cleaner, greener economy “ .Accordingly, they guaranteed a key ventures $1.5 billion to handle environmental change, decreasing water contamination, enhancing vitality security etcetera. In their stage they have expressed sustainable development as the main right decision for Canada to guarantee long haul success as a country in an
One of the most vigorously debated topics is the issue of sustainability. These include climate change, overpopulation, pollution, and ignorance to the damage being done to the environment. The climate that all living things have come to rely upon is changing because of global warming. Today, sustainability has become a focal point and a significant part of life. Sustainability is defined as the ability to meet current environmental, ecological, economics, social and cultural needs without risking the ability of future generations to meet those same needs. What does the Best American Science Wtg. 2014 teach us about sustainability, and what makes the paradigm shift to a sustainable planet? These different authors explain with example how sustainability can be achieved and also the different points of views that exist. “TV as birth control,” by Fred Pearce, “Why the brain prefers paper,” by Ferris Jabrs, “Bringing them back to life,” by Carl Zimmer and “A race to save the orange by altering its DNA”, by Amy Harmon’s – reveals that cultural sustainability involves efforts to preserve the actual and evasive cultural elements of sociality such as heritage, educational opportunities and public policies, in way that promote environmental, economic and social sustainability.

Climate change has become the most serious global environmental threat with sides of people who do not believe it exists and people who are actually aware. The release of greenhouse gases such as carbon and methane into the atmosphere has been known to be one of the major causes of climate change. Scientists explain that these emissions must drastically reduce to avoid a 2°C rise in average global temperature. Therefore different countries have made policies and ways to reduce the production of these gases and Canada is one of them. Canada ranks 15th out of 17 countries for greenhouse gas emissions per capita.Canada’s per capita decreased by nearly 5% between 1990 and 2010 while the total GHG emissions in Canada grew by 17%. The
This engagement process was facilitated by the City of Edmonton’s Office of Environment and was in partnership with Alberta Climate Change Dialogue (ABCD) and the Centre for Public Involvement (CPI) (Citizens’ Panel on Edmonton’s Energy and Climate Changes, 2013, pg. 1). The goals of the panel, the function and the process were clearly outlined in the Participants Handbook 2012 given to all the panel participants (Citizens’ Panel on Edmonton’s Energy and Climate changes Participant Handbook, 2012, pgs. 1-84). The goals of the project were to explore Edmontonians views on the importance of reducing its carbon footprint for future policy and direction. Final recommendations included that “the City of Edmonton take the measures needed to become a low Carbon City by 2050 and six goals (Citizens’ Panel on Edmonton’s Energy and Climate changes, 2013, pg. 1) were determined by this engagement process.
Canada is a role model for all countries hoping to reduce the human influence on climate change and preserve Earth’s natural beauty. Canada’s mission launched into action by raw fact doggedly continues to make a difference. Going forward, let us remember that we live on the same planet that our posterity will and let us strive to make our posterities’ planet better than
Coming into this class I believed sustainability needed to be taught as a mandatory way of life, relying on personal change in order to lessen our environmental footprint. Although my knowledge of sustainability has grown, this new information has only reaffirmed my initial beliefs of what sustainability is. Sustainability is a necessary practice that will only become more important as the population rises. With an increasing population, we face a growing strain on our natural resources. The major point that has changed since my first position paper, was my exclusion of the government and corporate role in the struggle for sustainability and global equality. Immoral corporate control of natural resources, such as water, is a vital factor
