Poe vs Jacobs Suspense The authors Poe and Jacobs both use suspense in their own ways in the stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Monkey’s Paw”. People like there suspense because they use it in their own unique way. A story needs suspense to keep the reader hooked and interested in the situation. Suspense helps a story to show emotion in the character or even the reader. Suspense can be maintained but the authors Poe and Jacobs do it in their own way in the stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Monkey’s Paw”. The first technique the authors use to create suspense is point of view. Poe uses this point of view to show that the caretaker is talking to the audience. Showing this, “True, nervous-very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am!”. This quote shows that he is agreeing with the audience with what they think of him. Also the author Jacobs uses suspense through point of view. Jacobs does this through the start of something long and possibly dangerous. Poe uses setting as the reader is about to get scared or attacked. In the text, “And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it- oh, so gently!”. This shows he is watching the man and waiting for the right moment to strike. In Addition, Jacobs also uses setting for suspense. Jacobs does this through a more familiarizing setting or one that is pleasant. From the author, “without, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlor of laburnum villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly.”. This quote shows that the area was wet but the more pleasant, warm fire comforted them along with the privateness with the blinds closed.
