Survived: A Short Story

I managed to make very few promises in my lifetime. The majority of them were with my mother, her pleading eyes telling me to stray away from things that could "harm" me. Usually after the first week or so it was broken, and the guilt washed away in time, but when Ruby Ramirez made one with me I knew I would have to keep my word.

"If you could do anything," she started, grabbing my hand in the process and twisting in the dewy grass,"What would it be?"

I turned around to face her, really thinking about it. Well many things actually. I'd be myself for starters, and maybe even stand up to my family. I'd try to be a stronger person, and then my dad would possibly start talking to me again. But as desperate as I was to tell her everything, not one of those words ever escaped my mouth. She didn't do it to please others, or because she was pressured into doing so, but because she was actually happy. "There's a lot of things, some which are going to have to wait. For now though, I want to to thrive. Surviving is easy, and quite frankly very boring. Why give in when you have the option to conquer?"

"You have a really good point. But it's not always that easy. Once you hit the bottom it's difficult to get back up." I knew from personal experience.

Ruby sighed loudly and closed her eyes. I was so tempted to crawl away but as if she read my mind, she gripped my hand tighter. "You are absolutely right, which I hate you for right now, but let's not think about that. If we can't help other people, we can at least help ourselves."

"Selfish much?"

She responded with another award winning laugh. "No, we're taking advantage of self empowerment. But in all seriousness, can you promise me that if either of us are in a situation, we'll help each other
