The students have learned about the surgical supplies and instruments, and also about surgical asepsis and assisting with surgical procedures. Medical assistant’s duties are preparing the patients and the sterile field, assisting the physician as needed, taking care of the patient after the procedure, and properly disinfect the area that was used. Also, the medical assistant should document as needed. In surgical solution the solutions are sterile water and sterile saline. These solution is used in minor surgery. Students were taught to know the types of instruments to use in surgery, how they are used and how they are cleaned after usage. Asepsis is the freedom from infection or infectious material. Medical asepsis destruction of organisms
A circulator is either a registered nurse or a healthcare assistant who runs around in the theatres making sure that the scrub nurse gets any additional equipment’s they ask for. A scrub nurse role is to assist the surgeon with instruments during the procedure but usually a scrub nurse can also a play a role of being a surgical first assistant. Dual role is not to be undertaken by anyone who has not received proper training or education. There are adjusted roles which are arranged or changed roles to match or function in a certain way and augmented roles are already developed or well underway. The First Surgical Assistant works within a clinical governance framework during the intra-operative phase of the patient’s care, working as part of the operating room team.
In order for physicians to get clinical surgery privileges to perform certain procedures in the realm of their practices, they have to obtain adequate abilities and experiences. There must be a combination of knowledge in theory and experience earned during practical situations. Without a clear confirmation of such combination of theory and practical knowledge, physicians are not in a safe position to perform any procedures. In the hospital setting, physicians must receive the clinical surgery privileges from hospital to perform any procedure there. It is incumbent to hospital to make sure all due diligence is followed by the physician. The hospital must check and cross
Upon observation of the circulating nurse, I noticed that she was very interactive and involved in the surgery. One of the responsibilities of the circulating nurse is to retrieve any surgical supplies that are not available in the operating room and to make or receive any calls for the surgeon. During the surgery, I noticed the nurse call for an x-ray for the surgeon, the laboratory for biopsy samples, and the operating room floor front desk to inform them that the surgery would be later than expected. This is her responsibility as the surgeon cannot break sterility by touching the phone and it is easier for him to communicate through her and not leave the surgical site. Also in the operating room, I observed the scrub nurses’ roles. Before the operation, the scrub nurse opened all of the sterile packages, arranged them on the sterile field, and took count of what was there along with the circulating nurse. The scrub nurse did this because she is sterile during the entire procedure, and once the sterile packs are opened, the contents can only be handled by sterile personnel. The scrub nurse also was ready and waiting at the sterile field at all times to get the surgeon any equipment needed from the sterile field. This is helpful to the surgeon because it enables the surgeon to stay at the surgical site and convenient for when
The Joint Commission Accreditation Body assesses health care organization’s compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. The goal of the Joint Commission Body is to focus on critical aspects and patient safety issues in health care organizations, which can vary according to the setting of the health care being performed (Chassin, 2008). Infections occurring in surgical sites of patients account for 15% of all infections that transpire in a hospital setting, and the risk of death doubles in patients who develop infections. The dangers of surgical site infections include superficial, deep, and organ or space infections. The different infections include cellulitis, gangrene, MRSA, and wound sinus, which can lead to amputation, organ
Surgical Technologists have an important role in the operation room (OR). There are different positions within the Surgical Technology field, including Scrub Surgical Technologist, Circulating Surgical Technologist, and Second Assisting Technologist. Scrub Surgical Technologists have a number of tasks, including prepping the patient for surgery, sterilizing the OR, gown and glove surgeons and assistants, and assists the surgeon and other surgical team members in a number of ways, such as passing instruments and dressing wounds. Circulating Surgical Technologists have a number of tasks as well, including checking patient’s charts, identifying patient and verifying the surgery that will be performed with consent forms, assisting anesthesia
The purpose of this paper is to look at how this specialty is pertinent to the physician assistant profession by looking at the duties of an orthopedic surgery PA, observe how to become
VASNHS Surgical Specialty Outpatient department has a designated pre-operative management unit that oversees the patients undergoing surgery. The predicaments stem from various guidelines or protocol originating from numerous surgeons and clinics. At present, the pre-operative nurses abide simple pre-op instructions (NPO protocol, medications, what to bring, during the surgery, transportation, cancellation instructions) for the entire Surgical Specialty Outpatient department. Surgical procedures are being canceled due to lack of communications and cancelations of patients prior to surgery date.
Medical assistant’s have many responsibilities such as making appointments, assisting the physician, collecting specimens, and welcoming patients just to name a few. One of the most important, in my opinion, is that we are instrumental in helping patients feel comfortable in the office and
A. Thesis/Summary: I hope you have a better understanding of what the surgery staff members do to keep patients safe from a retained foreign body.
Assistant: Markus Leroy Johnson PAC (Surgical assistant was used for soft tissue protection and retraction and also for maintaining reduction during temporary and permanent fixation use of surgical assistant was medically necessary, and to prove the safety and efficacy of the procedure.)
Starry Night is notoriously famous and is probably Vincent Van Gogh’s most well-known piece of art, but that is all for a reason. Van Gogh very unique curving lines throughout the work and they create a flow to the painting that is very somber and fascinating. The line quality of the work seems whimsical in ways yet intentional, the lines are not pressed in very hard on the painting, you can tell because there are color differences within the lines meaning Van Gogh made casual strokes to create the lines, yet at the same time they are definitely intentional as Van Gogh uses the color variations to combine with one another creating a very colorful arrangement on the canvas. All of the colors may be mellow and cool, but they are all very unique and different in their own ways. Van Gogh uses the actual stars in Starry Night to create a stark contrast to the rest of the scene. The stars shine bright yellow and orange in the night sky, drawing the viewers gaze and attention. Yet at the same time there is an ominous black object in the foreground of the painting, the object is said to be a cypress tree but it is no less interpreted for its possible deeper meanings. The painting uses these stars as the acting natural light for the painting and this is why the rest of the painting uses colors that are so cool, this is because Van Gogh wants clear contrasting values between the stars and dimly lit town. Van Gogh uses irregular shapes throughout the skyline and hills in the background
Puritans dominated New England and considered themselves Americans. These early Americans believed and valued many different things from the Americans today. These puritans did things differently and lived a different life compared to how Americans do things and live today. They lived differently, they did things differently and they even believed in different things than from what us Americans believe in today, how we live, and how we do things. The Puritans had their own bible and believed that it was an ideal plan, they were very religious people. They believed in many different things and they also believed that God played a major role in everything.
The OR is naturally a high risk environment, surgery naturally exposes staff to patient blood and body fluids, involves the handling of sharp instruments, and the close interactions of the surgical team within a limited amount of space (Jagger et al., 2011). Operations involve the types of sharps; trocars, some surgical instruments, saws, drills, reamers, and some suture needles and scalpel blades that may not easily be replaced with Safety Engineered Devices (SED’s) (Guest, Kable, & McLeod, 2010). The majority of sharps injuries within the OR result from handling sharps, such as needles, blades and sharp instruments hand-to-hand (Jagger et al., 2011).
Surgical site infections are considered preventable. Because such infections are considered preventable, there are legal consequences directly connected to such a condition. In this paper, I will discuss what an SSI is and the reasons on why it is considered to be preventable. I will also discuss the role of disclosure and legal implications that are related to SSIs, accreditation expectations, and continuous quality monitoring as it relates to SSIs.
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the leading type of infections among hospitalized patients. There are so many reasons why people go for surgery; it can be an emergency reasons or elective. According to Beaver, (2008) a primary concern in healthcare today is the prevention of infections. Careful handling of the surgical equipment reduces the chances of surgical site infections, for instance equipment sterilization and careful hand hygiene of surgical equipment.
