Bethany Hamilton was a world class surfer who won many surfing awards. She started surfing at age five, and was already in the most elite competitions by age 13. But, as she ran towards the ocean and shoved off from her board on Halloween 2003, her life would change forever. A tiger shark could ahold of her arm, and tugged with all his might. She had not felt any pain, but pressure. “With a strange calmness, Bethany stared at the stump on her shoulder where her arm used to be.” (Shark Attack Survivor).

Through George’s guidance, Steinbeck shows in reality that not all goals can be done with just hard work. A little luck can be helpful as well, but some goals are just doomed to fail. With an understanding of this theme, we can incorporate this reality into our own goals and helping us farther in our own
The SURFRIDER FOUNDATION is a non-profit organization that works to protect and preserve the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches. The site shows their dedication to bringing awareness to the problems our oceans are facing, cleaning up and taking care of the beaches that are both closed, and open throughout the world. Nationwide, in just about every state, some portion of the beach is public land, which means that all members of the public have the right to use that portion of the beach. Surfrider recognizes that access to public beaches is the public’s right of access to waterways. The foundation also realizes the safety hazards of having a polluted ocean. Polluted oceans can mean dangers for swimmers and for other sea creatures that are important to us and our well-being. This beach friendly foundation is working very hard to preserve and protect our oceans, waves, and beaches and is making progress in doing so.

Today, I am writing my college essay, an essay that has my very future on the precipice of success and mediocrity, on surfing. If someone had told me five days ago this would be my topic, I would have applied to the first dead end job that crossed my path. What did I know about surfing? Five days ago the answer was nothing, and, proudly, today that answer has changed. Since my first time touching a surfboard I have ridden my first wave and gotten my first mouthful of sand. The glorious part is that every time I touch that board I get the biggest, and goofiest, smile on my face even when there is sand seeping out of it.

This is where you stand up on a board, and use a paddle to steer and move. The sibling to surfing, is body boarding. This is when you ride a wave on a body board on your stomach, drop knee, or even standing!
