We will be leading a support group for women residents of the Stearns County jail. We will have adult coloring books for the women, if they wish to color during our group time. Additionally, we hope to have conversations about self-esteem, healthy relationships, addictions, and any other topics that the women would like to discuss. Purpose The purpose of our group is to provide overall support for the women and boost the self-confidence of the women residents. We recognize that these women often have a low self-esteem; therefore, we hope our meetings will increase self-confidence in the women. We will conduct the group by first letting the residents know that there are boundaries and rules; no interrupting others, no judgement of others, …show more content…
Cloud, MN 56303. Due to Stearns County being a public entity, their financial resources come from the government and property taxes. Staffing at the Stearns County Jail consists of program directors, correctional officers, and volunteers. The demographics within the jail are always changing and it houses both males and females; however, our group will only be open to the female residents. Membership Women residents of the Stearns County Jail can be members of our group. This population was chosen because we both thought it would be a new learning experience to work within the jail system; in addition, our supervisor at the jail suggested that he needed an all-female group. Furthermore, we liked the idea of stepping outside of our comfort-zones. We also though this group would be a little more challenging, yet we have high hopes that this will be a great learning experience for the both of us. Recruitment We have created a poster that our supervisor will hang up in the jail. The poster will include our group name, the day and times we will meet as a group, and some topics we can discuss. We also made note that we will be supplying adult coloring books. There will be a signup sheet provided by the jail staff and women will sign up for our group prior to us meeting. The poster will hopefully interest the women residents and get them to attend. Composition Members must be female. Members also must be residents at the Stearns County Jail.
The women, who have all been sentenced to less than a year at Riker’s, attended biweekly lessons about parental discipline, communication skills and how to be positive role models in their children's lives. This was the first time the Osborne Association-run program, called FamilyWorks, has been open to female inmates at Riker’s. It's funded by the city Correction Department, the City Council and the federal government. For some, the voluntary course is an important step toward regaining custody of their children upon release from jail. For others, it's a chance to understand the impact their incarceration has had on their children.

She explains vividly about women life in prison and what she was going through as an inmate. The book also gives other stories about other female inmates. Orange is The New Black provides insight as to how a prison sentence can affect the relationships had before entering the prison culture as well as the effect that can be had on your significant others. The following essay will discuss the process that women may experience when entering and adjusting to the prison life,
Male prisoners also continue to make up the majority of the prison population. However, women prisoner rates have been on the rise and have exceeded that of male growth rates since 1995. In fact, due to the increase of the women prison population, various issues have arisen which require women to be treated differently from men. Such issues correctional facility’s face because of this increase include program delivery, housing conditions, medical care, staffing, and security (American Corrections, 2016). These problems are in part due to the different social and economic differences women are faced with in prison and while preparing for their release back to society.
The prison world is predominately male dominated. As the years go by, female incarceration levels have been rapidly increasing. The prisons in early days didn’t have to worry about dealing with two different types of inmates as there were not that many females incarcerated. While male and female inmates do have some similarities, they also have some distinct differences. The way they conduct themselves in prison are different; as are they way they interact with other inmates. Males typically are in prison for more violent crimes than women, making the maximum security prisons mainly male. Throughout this paper, these differences and a few similarities are discussed.
In prison, women are considered to be less violent than male inmate. This difference is not taken into account upon constructing prisons for female offenders. In fact, construction is based on the correctional model about men being violent. Each gender interacts within prisons differently as well. For instance, males form gangs within prisons. They act territorially and fight to maintain power. In addition, men are more likely to congregate by race. On the other hand, females look to form small families that are not racially specific. Women will fight due to jealousy. However, they are more likely to vent their hostility upon themselves through self mutilation. The way the prison is set up also creates a difference. Prisons for males dived prisoners via classification based on the dangerousness of the crime. In contrast women’s prisons generally allow incarcerated women to mix freely (Stuart von Wormer & Bartollas, 2011).
For countless years now, women have been struggling for equal rights in society. I chose to write my essay on the topic of women in prison because they need support but often overlooked by society. These women go through many obstacles like mental health, sexual harassment, and inequality. The number of females in prison is currently rising every day, in spite of the fact that men still the leading numbers in jail. Women are in prison due to different causes many are incarcerated for nonviolent crimes. Simply because they need to survive in a society that is very sexist and racist. It's hard to find a stable job that's why some females support their families by becoming a prostitute, steal or sell drugs. Once incarcerated, women not only have limited access to job coaching programs, education and several other services they are also sexually abused. Basically, inside prison females go through the same discrimination and abuse they go through outside.

In this society, depending on the crime many people may view women in prison as people who should be kept off the streets, such as thugs, gang members, and women who are drug addicts. A big misunderstanding that people have is that they see them as a lost cause. However, through each of these stories you get to know each person and their life stories
Purpose of the group counseling varies from group to group. It can be therapeutic, educational, or helping people to make fundamental changes in their way of thinking, feeling and behaving (Corey, 2004, p. 7). Group counseling/therapy has the advantage of being more effective than individual therapy because, it more closely stimulates social interactions and interpersonal communication patterns than does individual counseling (Kottler, 2004, p. 260). The techniques and strategies use in group counseling are to help resolve members’ interpersonal conflict, promote greater self-awareness and insight, and help them work to eliminate their self-defeating
Furthermore, female inmates are another challenge for correctional administrators. For example, an important and alarming issue such as overwhelming pregnancy and abortion related health care factors can become expensive. These inmates need special clear, intensive monitoring and observation. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, “200,000 women are living behind prison or jail walls and thousands of these women are pregnant and dependent on the correctional administrators for health care.” (para. 1). Even though correctional administrators are legally obligated to meet their needs, there are guidelines that they must follow. These guidelines are put in place to further assist correctional administrators so that they are not violating the rights and well-being of female inmates who are already pregnant or considering on having a child while incarcerated.
However poor the stereotype may be, there has been research to prove that one it isn’t as frequent and has a magnitude and could provide an integral emotional function in the prison system. Tramwells narrative study shows that sexual relationship in the prison setting can be used to facilitate the need to create pseudo-family. The former illustrates how important interpersonal relationships are between women. It is important for emotional wellness and the process of integrating back into society as a mentally healthy person to establish healthy relationships (Tramwell, 2013). Cecil who has done research on media representation on women in prison shares how detrimental these negatives stereotypes like OITNB can be on community involvement in prison related programs.
Research carried out by Jennings (1950) studied 400 girls in an American correctional facility. He found that the most popular girls were the ones who helped others by protecting, supporting and encouraging them (Cardwell, Clarke, & Meldrum, 2002).
The War on Drugs has led to an increase in the mass incarceration of people of color and minorities, which is a problem in the United States. In the past thirty years, the number of females jailed across the country, many of whom are poor with mental health and drug problems. The increase in the incarceration of females has had a devastating impact on their children, families and communities. This paper will describe the authors of Upper Bunkies Unit and Orange Is the New Black who wrote their respective books about the same prison, the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, a low-security female prison. Both books contain many themes, such as broken families, limited services available and substance abuse treatment. This paper will also explore many factors influencing the success or failure of incarcerated females in reintegrating after their release from prison. Literature will be used to provide insight into the lives of females behind bars by focusing on their well-being and resources available. In addition, the current trend in treatment, such as substance abuse and mental health treatments will be discussed. Lastly, collateral consequences will be explored.
More and more women-mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, and sisters are doing hard prison time all across the United States. Many of them are facing the prospect of years, decades, even lifetimes behind bars. Oddly, there’s been little public discussion about the dramatic increase of women in the prison system. What exactly is happening here, and why?
