In Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s “Fantastic Four” issue one, the comic emphasizes the significance of working together in a team, regardless of whatever personal differences or opinions the members may have. They highlight the importance of uniting together to achieve a common goal and being reliable within the team. These moral characteristics were ranked highly among the children, with a significant correlation between the children’s own morals and of the Fantastic Four’s (Martin 246). Young boys tend to identify themselves with superheroes, who share their main values, which include doing what they think is right and to be counted on doing their part in a group (Martin 247): all values that the Fantastic Four demonstrates. A standard hero “embodies what we believe is best in ourselves. A hero is a standard to aspire to as well as an individual to be admired” (Miczo 4). The displays of these superheroes emerged as the characters underwent certain transformations, experiences of growth in empathy, and turned towards the good. They uphold and maintain the public sphere as they operate in complete freedom and for the benefit of others. In later parts of the Spider-Man series, Peter readiness to forgive and not be bound by his past mistakes but be conditioned by it are what the Fantastic Four also did in their first issue. They ensure a connection between their identities and facilitate the development in the community, often adding to it and learning from it. They provide memorable messages and have a significant influence on behavior (Miczo 91-92, 94). It is also good to note that Spider-Man’s origin differs from the Fantastic Four as it was only through the death of someone Peter cared for that becomes the catalyst needed for his transformation to set himself on the right path of a hero. His origin and trauma towards the guilt of the death of his uncle by the hands of a criminal he could have stopped (seen and revealed on also page 8 and 11 of “Amazing Fantasy”) at the time later conditioned him to be a responsible person (Miczo100-101). Therefore, these character traits illustrated by these superhero characters such as the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man only adds to the positive development of children as it nurtures and encourages the heroic narratives of justice and the benefits of
The creation of a new superhero would result in success, fame and money. In Marvel Comics it states, “In 1961, the Fantastic Four were the first characters to reach the public” (Coletta, Marvel Comics). It became a prosperous superhero, causing them to very appealing to many people. As Coletta states, “Reader were drawn to these heroes, who seemed to spend as much time bickering with one another as they did battling villains” (Coletta, Marvel Comics). Not only were they a single person with astounding superpowers, but were a group of everyday people who lived in New York City.
Peter Parker once said, “I believe there 's a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride, even though sometimes we have to be steady, and give up the thing we want the most. Even our dreams”. Peter Parker is an uncooperative teen who was handed the most daunting task of being a hero and protecting the lives of others. His personality quickly changed from this character who couldn’t care less for others, to putting all his worries into the safety of society. Not all heroes have to be bitten by a spider and given a costume. Some are normal everyday people who accept this challenge of protecting a belief. Louie Zamperini exceeds the limitations for the definition of a hero through perseverance and surviving as well as keeping others alive. In Hillenbrand’s novel Unbroken, syntax, tone, and imagery shows that Louie was proven to be an iconic hero.
In the movie, “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the director uses the archetypes, The Battle of Good vs Evil, The Hero, The Tyrant, The Warrior, Sidekicks, and The Forest. We as humans, will not find our confidence in ourselves for a long time because bravery is a hard thing to accomplish and is a difficult task to do by yourself. This theme is conveyed throughout the entire movie because people need to step up and face the evil that could await them if they don’t find the confidence from what makes the person the person. Spider-Man was shown to be a nerdy high schooler who doesn’t make many friends. He gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains powers that nobody would have ever imagined. Everything about him changed which made him fight evil
It seems that children seek to have an ideal of a perfect hero to whom they can admire. Superhero comics deserve their own part in the history of comics, since most comics are only about superheroes, and Captain America, is in fact a superhero. What are the roles of a hero in defining the values of a culture? A man on the street might tell you, a superhero is someone with extraordinary abilities and powers who saves the day. Superheroes could be characterized as having super strength, the ability to fly, or magical capabilities that utilizes the elements. Most would probably say superheroes are usually attractive white men, who have a super strength,
Many things are classified as “heroes” in modern day society, such as Spiderman; a fictional superhero, that teenagers around the world look at in awe of his web-slinging powers, and also relate to him as he tries to balance his crime-fighting with his teenage life. In a nutshell, old era heroes code of honor has dissipated, and a new covenant had been formed with modern day heroes. Modern society has lost their code of honor.
Lee was in the lowest point of his comic book career and was about to change careers. He decided to give it one last go by writing two different superhero stories: The Fantastic Four and The Amazing Spider-Man. These two stories defied the superhero graphic at the time with the Fantastic Four being a family turned superhero team and Spider-Man being the first teen superhero that was not a sidekick. Spider-Man put a grand effect on people as it put a realistic high school student struggling with the loss of his parental figure. The origin of Spider-Man is shown in Amazing Fantasy #15. Peter Parker was a “hard working honor student” constantly rejected being seen as a nerd. One day, however, Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider that somehow grants Peter the “proportionate speed, strength and agility of a spider” (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man). After finding these powers, Peter later exploits them for himself as a wrestler winning money nightly. One night, a thief is running from a cop with Peter in front of him. Instead of stopping the thief, Peter arrogantly lets the thief go and tells the cop, “Sorry, pal! That’s your job!... From now on I just look out for number one -- that means -- me!” (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man). Peter would later find out that the same thief he had let escape would kill his Uncle Ben. After he hands the thief to the police as Spider-Man, he tells himself, “If only I had stopped when I could have! But I didn’t -- and now -- Uncle Ben -- is dead” (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man). In the story, Parker is an intelligent, socially awkward, and often bullied young teenager who has parental figures in his life. This allowed him to be more relatable and more interesting to readers who were accustomed with characters like Superman who is an alien on Earth, Wonder Woman who is a goddess, and Batman who is a
Through my analyzation of these values, I have assessed the relevance of superheroes in cinema through the impact of American popular culture, the contrast of gender roles, and their impact on children. As a result, society should be gracious toward the immense popularity of superhero films, as they bolster American popular culture and positively impact children from a young age. Although the gender roles might be a bit skewed, many film companies are taking steps to include women in more empowering roles such as Wonder Woman in the DC cinematic universe. Therefore, superheroes in cinema tend to only create and preserve positive characteristics within society, which is glorious in the future of mankind. In closing, I end with the question, “Which superhero best depicts
The reason superpowers are important is because it allows them to save people and fight villains. Superpowers range from strength to immunity. Statistics prove that every superhero has at least one impeccable superpower; that contributes to there abilities to perform their task or goal. For example, Night Crawler, Animal Man, Wonder Woman, and Dream Girl. The Night Crawler has the ability to teleport; To move energy from one point to another without traversing the physical space between them.
But, they can also be influenced by good things. When a little boy looks up to a superhero all they want to do is ‘save the day’. These kids want to be like the superhero so they begin doing good things. This is a very important thing to notice because this shows how easily kids can be influenced. Also, when a child begins to do bad things, we tell them why what they did was bad so that next time they do the right thing.
The loneliest Marvel hero is Spiderman, who is arguably the most DC-like. But amazing as Spiderman is, he’s not an easy-going newspaper reporter (Clark Kent), a spoiled industrialist (Bruce Wayne), a forensics expert (Barry Allen), or the King of Atlantis (Aquaman). Peter Parker is a dorky freelance photographer. He stutters through ordinary conversations. He pines over a sweet girl Superman wouldn’t even notice, unless she had a cat stuck in a tree. Everybody treats Peter like dirt. He’s a normal orphaned nerd with conflicted feelings and a secret life. What could be more human than
In comic book origin stories, there is a common theme – a sort of call to action. Usually, the hero has lost something close to them that causes them to don their costume and protect the world from something like that happening again. For Superman, his planet was destroyed. For Batman, his parents were taken from him when a robbery went bad. For Spider-Man, a burglar killed his Uncle Ben. As a teenager, this could have led Peter Parker down a road of crime and sorrow, but instead, he chose to listen to his uncle’s last words, “with great power comes great responsibility.” And ever since his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, the web-slinger has had the responsibility of protecting New York City.
Superheroes are very popular in our society, most people in today’s world spend their time either watching superhero movies or reading superhero comic books. Although there are many reasons why superhero fans are so popular, the most important ones are, their movies are related to the current world issues, such as fight prejudice, stereotype, good team work, and they always inspire the young children. Superheroes having powers doesn’t mean that they’re not humans, They can save the world and fight criminals but they still have to deal with the fact of being a human being because they also face negative things like prejudice and stereotype. Superheroes fighting these will influence the children to do the same thing.
A superhero’s main characteristic is to be able to a unique individual which will separate them from being categorized with the typical other “heroes”. Coogan states that a “superhero” is an individual that exemplifies the three main characteristics mission, power and identity. A unique superhero must have a mission that involves the main motive to save civilians without there being any personal gain from this experience. Coogan states that without this personal mission that this “superhero” would just be a ordinary person that would be an extremely helpful in the event of a dilemma. A unique superhero must posses these extraordinary but mystical powers that reflect their human identity or personality. These powers have been greatly exaggerated
Adam Hogue, in his article “Why Do Americans Love Superheroes So Much?,” discusses the reasons behind the popularity of the superheroes. Hogue’s purpose is to instill the idea that superheroes are popular due to their static personalities. First, he illustrates his opinion with his anecdote about Captain America: “Sure, there were some slightly different nuances here and there, but for the most part, he was the same man…The superhero is someone we deeply trust” (para 9). Here the author describes how his personal attachment to Captain America was due to his unchanging personality and how the Captain “wasn’t going to be dead forever” (para 9). Not only this, Hogue demonstrates his ideas by using Spiderman as an example: “With
When you think of a superhero one normally thinks of Spiderman, Batman, or Superman, but there were superheroes long before these characters were created. First one must understand that the basis of this name is hero. What is a hero? A hero is a person who does something special or out of the ordinary in order to help others. It could also be someone who is admired for a characteristic about them, be it physical or mental. They are individuals that normal everyday people can look up to. This being the case, a superhero is nothing more then someone who is a hero, but not just that once and for that one person, but someone who helps many people, or leads them. As time went by the number of people who were true heroes diminished and just
