Watkins claims that throughout “A Rose for Emily,” Faulkner purposely focuses on the conflicts between the past and present, the North and the South, and between traditional and modern values. He additionally mentions that Faulkner decided to divide the story into five different sections in order for the reader to understand the distinction between Emily and the townspeople. Watkins argues that in each section the author intensifies the invasions of Emily’s home and emphasizes the fact that her character changes throughout them. She gradually “withdrawals” from the town and isolates herself until she dies.
