In the short story “The Things They Carried,” Tim O’Brien writes about a group of soldiers during the Vietnam war. Tim O’Brien goes into detail on what the soldiers carry. Most of the items are necessary for war, such as weapons, ammo, and medicine. Other items that the soldiers carry are more for comfort, such as a loved one’s photo, a lucky pebble, or a rabbit's foot. However, most of what the soldiers carry are not physical objects but are emotional tolls that the soldiers must carry wherever they go.
I found it interesting when O’Brien stated that the soldiers “carried the land itself-- Vietnam, the place, the soil--- a powdery orange-red dust that covered their boots and fatigues and faces. They carried the sky. The whole atmosphere, they carried it.” The soldiers did not physically carry Vietnam, but the statement is more of a metaphor for the emotional things the soldiers carried. By describing how the dust of Vietnam covered the soldiers, the author shows how Vietnam is a part of the soldiers. It was what had brought them to war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams or glory of dishonor, just to avoid the blush of dishonor.” This is significant because it shows that the soldiers constantly carry the fear of dishonor. The soldiers could run away from the war or refuse to kill or fight, however, they know that by doing so they would be labeled as dishonorable. The quote surprised me because when I think of war, I always imagine brave men standing up for their country and doing what is honorable in order to serve their country. However, I never thought that some soldiers might fight and kill not to serve, but out of fear that they might be
