The Memoir Spider Eaters by Rae Yang is her personal account of her life during the Maoist revolution. In addition, she reminisces about her trials and tribulations during her active participation in the culture revolution and the great North Wilderness. Her family also had various misfortunes due to these changing ideological beliefs spread by the revolution. This memoir illustrates in great detail what Yang experienced under communist rule. Spider Eaters opened up a door to a young girl and her families struggle to be good Samaritans under communist rule and their final disillusionment of the revolution they whole heartedly believed in. Yang and her family struggled with the vast ideological changes during the Maoist Revolution, in turn,
For example, Bailey does not want her to carry the cat to their journey. However, grandmother does not listen to him and she hides the cat inside the car in a basket and thus secretly brings the cat along with her. On their way, she also wants to go and visit the old plantation even though Bailey does not agree to this. In order to see that she gets what she wants, she talks to the children and convinces them to tell Bailey to do as she wishes. The author writes “There was a secret panel in this house…. and the story went that all the family silver was hidden in it when Sherman came through but it was never found . . .” (O’Connor 45). Grandmother says these words craftily in her attempts to convince Bailey to drive to the old plantations even though she knows that she is not telling the truth. Evidently, she leads the family into a dangerous tour drive. In this tour, the family ends up having an accident due to the Pitty Sing cat sneaking out of the car, leaping on Bailey who loses control of the car. She avoids responsibility by pretending to be hurt. Her actions put the family in dangerous situations.
Their “gift” was a beast, a creature that brought fear to the entire island. Something they have never dealt with before something of their nightmares something watching and waiting for them. Sam and Eric were the guards of the fire when the beast fell from the sky into a tangle of creepers and trees on the top of the mountain where they were. When Sam and Eric woke to get the fire going again they turned to see a horrifying beast. Their nightmares were alive and trying to get them!
In The witches Stacy Schiff starts off by giving accurate background information of what happened in Salem. Fourteen women and five men died in 1692 because of the witch trials. Then Schiff starts to get in to detail. In the village minister’s house, the two little girls crawled under the furniture it was a great hassle to get them out, they would make made silly noises, spread their arms out like wings and pretended they could fly. Betty Parris nine years old who was the parson’s daughter, and cousin Abigail Williams who was eleven years old. These actions were absurd hence they have always been exemplary children. Soon enough comments began to spread through Salem: The children had been bewitched. Then Clergymen started coming then the
Sethe and her daughter Denver live in a house 124 that just happens to be haunted by the ghost of Sethe's first child. She invites Paul D a man she hasn't seen in 18 years into her house to talk. Paul D always had liked Sethe. She was sent there to replace Baby Suggs whose son, Halle, Sethe's husband brought her freedom. When he began doing this the ghost of the house gets angry and begans to shake but eventually Paul D. scares the ghost away.
The story continues to have comical parts as the family continues traveling to Florida until the grandmother remembers of a time when she was young and decides she wants to visit an old home. She tells the children about a house and even lies to them and says that there are "secret panels" (324). They become very excited and Bailey decides to let them go see it and on the way there is when the tone and story line changes.
Once got back home from the hospital, she was trying to get used the idea of what had happened. She stayed at home for some time to recuperate. She started to sleep walk but it was right into the woods. Where she claims to have seen the creature of the night. The creature was so horrifying that when Lisa finally woke up from her mom shaking her, the creature’s image was vivid in her mind. Her mom was very worried for her because she had started to sleep walk and hallucinate during the day about a creature.
Marlee watched as the first visitor approached the door from the upstairs window. He was sitting upstairs cooking shrimp in a pot of oil. He was kind of confused to see a crazed person approach the abandon house at 9 p.m. This visitor looked old and weary. It was an old lady who was carrying a purse, while she was walking up to the house she took out a key like she lived there. Marlee was so scared he thought he was in the wrong house. He quickly called Max and told him to get over to the house right away! The old lady walked inside and started to walk up the stairs. She soon opens the creaky door who reveals frightened Marlee sitting in a boxy chair in the corner. Thats when she started screaming at the top of her lungs, her head was turning red like a cherry, it looked like her head was going to explode. Marlee took off running.
Meanwhile, Seth disobeys the rules and goes off into the woods. On his adventure, he spots an old shack covered in ivy and vines. He notices an old women that is gnawing on a rope that she is tied to. She asks Seth if he would come inside and share a cup of tea with her. Seth asks if she is a witch, then she becomes very furious and puts a curse on him. He sprints of like a cheetah and runs away from the “witch”. The next morning, their grandpa asks them “What do you suppose makes people so eager to break rules?’’ He keeps his eye on Seth. Seth explains to his grandpa that he was just very curious and that he met a creepy old lady. His grandpa nods and changes the subject. They are given some milk (the magical one) by Lena she said that it would give them the power to see “what is really out there.” Seth shows Kendra a hidden pond with gazebos, a boardwalk, and a boathouse. Grandpa explains that his yard is not a place for endangered animals, but for mystical creatures such as fairies, trolls, and imps. This land is known as Fablehaven and it is owned by lots of people, passed down every few centuries. He also explains that the old woman in the forest was actually a real witch. Her name is Muriel Taggert and the knots were her punishment for trying to put a curse on Fablehaven. After meeting
Day after day, we would pass the mansion building on our way to and from school. Branches of vines and clusters of moss crawled up the sides of the building. I could see the paint, tearing off the walls. People for years have said the mansion building is haunted, but I don’t believe it. They say people have been possessed and killed there. Olivia, of course, believes every detail anyone tells him. To teach him a lesson, we decided to plan to spend the night in the mansion building this Saturday.
Manuel Puig uses many recurring themes and motifs to convey his views and opinions on many highly political, and also controversial, matters, from his attitude towards Marxism, and his belief that people should be free to express themselves as well as being tolerant of others’ views, to his homosexuality being reflected in one of the two main characters.
While talking, the women find a fancy box belonging Mrs. Wright. Inside the box, is what they believe to be Mrs. Wright’s dead pet bird. They realize that “somebody – wrung – its – neck” (1172) Remembering a similar incident in her life, Mrs. Peters says, “When I was a girl – my kitten –there was a boy took a hatchet, and before my eyes, ..If they hadn’t held me back I would have hurt him.” (1172) They place the dead bird back in the box, and then, surprisingly, they hide the box. You can almost see what’s going on in the mind of these two women as they must be imagining poor Mrs. Wright, horrified that her awful husband killed her bird, then she must have snapped and strangled him to end her own suffering.
The family stops at a restaurant to get a bite to eat, and we find out that the two parents, Bailey and his wife, do not really care for the Grandmother. The Grandmother asks Bailey to dance, but he just declines and ignores her. Bailey’s wife does not seem to care either. They then continue on the road, and the Grandmother begins to tell the story of a house that she really enjoyed passing. She really wanted to go there, so she persuaded the children to want to go as well. After a long time of complaining, they finally convince their father to head back toward this house. They go down this road when all

On their walk they would pass one house and one house only which was in the heart of the woods. It was a dark brown house with white curtains. The house was very old and looked to be falling apart. They assumed it was abandoned and thought nothing of it. But every time Derek walked passed he would get a minor headache not even recognizing
