The 2011 Institute of Medicine (IMO) report regarding the Future of Nursing, recognized that the nursing profession has the ability to create change for patient outcomes and for the entire health care system. One of the core competencies of the Future of Nursing IOM report is for professional nurses to utilize evidence-based practice to incorporate clinical evidence at the point of care to improve outcomes for patients (Institute of Medicine, 2011). One way nurses can improve patient care is through the use of check lists or care bundles. Care bundles grouping together of clinically evident care to improve outcomes for patients. Many care bundles are nurse driven and have demonstrated through research, improve outcomes for patients (AACN,
The Impact of the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on the Future of Nursing in Education, Practice and Leadership
This organization was designed to secure the services of prominent members of appropriate professions in the examination of policy matters relating to the health of the public. “The Institute acts to be an adviser to the federal government and, upon its own initiative, to identify issues of medical care, research, and education” (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010, p. 5) In October 2010, The IOM (Institute of Medicine) released the report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. This report examines the changing roles of nursing in healthcare, changes in nursing education and
The authors recommend that the findings originating from this study can be used as a basis to initiate protocols for implementation of bedside nursing
In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or PPACA gave many Americans the opportunity to have health care coverage that previously may have not been available to them. The reform is primarily aimed at decreasing the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans. The landscape of health care is changing and nursing is evolving alongside it. This health care overhaul gives nurses a vital role in leading the reform revolution. With more than three million strong, nursing is the biggest sector of the nation’s health care labor
Patients, in any healthcare setting, deserve respect and care that is centered on their unique needs. Nurses and health care are required to assist them to achieve this goal. Changing the health care system will require us to reestablish our
This paper will discuss various aspect of the future of health care focusing on the future of how nursing will play an ever-important role in the reformation of health care. Presentation regarding, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the future of nursing, at the Institute of Medicine report entitled, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” will help set the stage for this paper. Discussion will be had regarding the relationship of the Institute of Medicine to that of the nursing profession and the foreseeable changes to practice based on the Institute of Medicines recommendations. Further discussion will be had no the
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) strives to address the imperative health care controversies in the United States of America. The foundation endeavors to make coalitions with interested parties of leading health organizations to attain measurable, viable, and appropriate transformations in the health sector. The authorities led to the establishment of the 911 emergency calls, which enhance the care of livelihoods (Malone, 2013).Besides, for over 40 decades, the foundation is conveying commitment, experience, and a stringent balanced approach to the conditions, which compromise the health of the nationals (Malone, 2013).The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is congregating a cabinet of experts to analyze the necessity of incorporating nurses, expanding the nursing care solutions, and promoting dependency, which emerge as crucial solutions to different health challenges.
NYP Weill Cornell puts a strong emphasis on patient satisfaction. The famous slogan, “We Put Patients First”, serves as a reminder for clinicians, including nurses, to review and stay current with their practices. The Professional nurse can recommend integration of evidence as Evidence- Based Nursing Practice (EBNP) in order to improve patient care outcomes. First, the nurse needs to identify a problem based on patient safety enhancement opportunity, new approach to care delivery, procedure, a clinical situation, quality data or issue or other areas of interest in nursing practice. In order to develop an EBNP project, the nurse has to formulate a question applying the standard PICO-TS format (Population,
According to the IOM report, the nursing profession is undergoing fundamental changes within the underlying operations of the field. A new regulatory environment coupled with increased scrutiny of the profession will dramatically impact the nursing profession. As the report indicates nurses, in the near future, will have job requirements that are business oriented. Nurses will need to have a better understanding of quality management methods in addition to overall concepts of management. As the health care system continues its rapid reform nurses must also be cognizant of the effects these changes will have on their overall roles and responsibilities. This involves a transformation of the roles and responsibilities of nurses as they enter the profession. As the health care landscape continues to change, so too must the nurses of the future. A dedication to continual learning is therefore needed to help diminish the influence of antiquated and obsolete knowledge regarding the profession.
By focusing on overall patient care and satisfaction many areas patients are surveyed on can be improved. Once a performance standard is selected staff must develop a plan for improvement. The first step would be to research as many sources as possible to find the best evidence based practices that would work for the specific facility. This can be divided into two the two categories of direct nursing care and indirect nursing care. Direct nursing care would include implementing hourly rounding, adequate nursing staff and SBAR communication. Indirect nursing care includes availability of technology such as wireless communication, real time locating, wireless monitoring, and electronic medical records. The second step would contain education of the staff on what is to be implemented and why. The why is important for nurses to overcome any barriers that might be encountered. While nursing practice has grown based on evidence Vanhook (2009) explains the greatest barriers to evidence based practice, such as difficulty interpreting findings, limited time, and misunderstanding of research itself, and how to overcome these barriers. With phase one and two completed facilities can move forward with implementation and evaluation.
As a provider of care, professional nurses depend on research, theories, and evidence based practice to guide the care they provide to patients. Nurses deliver care to their patients based on information they have learned through many years of school and training. Training for nurses and other providers of care is founded on theories, research, and evidence based practice in the healthcare field. Theories, research, and evidence based practice are all important for providing care to patients and each can be used in a different manner depending on the situation. Clinicians often use research based evidence to design and implement care that is high-quality and cost effective for patients. Evidence based practice can be used to provide care to patients in a steadily changing clinical environment. (PDF page 8-9). Nursing theories are frequently used as frameworks for establishing nursing care interventions and assessing
Over the years nurses have relied on utilizing nursing interventions founded only on tradition. By following this trend nurses aren’t giving the best care, but the most popular care to patients. By choosing to care for patients using evidence based practice, nurses are giving the interventions they use credibility.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on the “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health has emphasized on the importance of professional development of the Nurses. Out of the four key messages of the report, I like to discuss about the key message number 2. “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression”.
Itroduction: Evidence-based practice is an approach to medicine that uses scientific evidence to determine the best practice (Beyea & Slattery, 2006). As nurses perform their daily tasks they must continually ask themselves, “What is the evidence for this intervention?”. Nurses are well positioned to question current nursing practices and use evidence to make care more effective. In order to improve patients’ outcomes it is the responsibility of the nurse to transition evidence-based practice into the norm, through application of daily practice (Flynn Makic, Rauen, Watson & Will Poteet, 2014). Continual evaluation of current practice must be performed to ensure the use of evidence-based practice opposed to practice based upon tradition. The implementation of evidence-based practice standardizes healthcare practices and diminishes groundless variations within care. These variations lead to the production of uncertain health outcomes (Stevens, 2013).
Upon considering the past and future of nursing, many changes have already taken place, and even larger changes are expected. With the recent rate of technological development, the heath care system is certain to follow in its advances at nearly the same pace. Many predictions for the future of medicine are based on computerized technology. The use of telemonitoring, video and “smart houses” are already being used by some companies today, and will be utilized more frequently in the future. This will enable one nurse to care for many more patients than he/she is capable of safely caring for currently. This is very important due to the baby-boomer generation growing older and the
