Morgan starts his journey with the first settlements in Virginia and continues until the start of the American Revolution. Morgan gives explanation of how ideals of freedom and English sense of superiority came to be a major stepping stone for independence and racism. Morgan’s question of how a country that proclaims liberty, equality and religious virtue can at the same time foster the opposing ideals of slavery and subjugation is the underlying question throughout the book. The book “American Slavery 1619-1877” is a book on slavery unlike anything I have ever read. Most books on slavery look at it through extremely common perspectives and have flooded the nonfiction genre. However, the author, Peter Kolchin, decides to show the reader that his studies on slavery are different from any previous study done. He brings up a lot of arguments that were actually thought to be unarguable, and shuts them down. It is miraculous to think that someone finally got to the very root of American slavery and can finally give Americans of today a real feel for the reasons behind slavery.

When Douglass was a slave, he had no knowledge that there was anything other than what he had. When he began to learn, he became aware of the inequality that he was living in. Slavery and Knowledge have an inverse relationship. A man is put into slavery by depriving him of the knowledge that there is anything more than what he has. Once a man has gained knowledge of an injustice, he can never be truly enslaved.

The time preceding the Civil War was a hard time in America for African American families and many authors, which are the base of how people portray their community, wrote about these struggles. They do this by creating feelings for their readers that become very persuasive. In the 1800s, stark reality was a very common type of writing. So much was actually happening that it made for good writing and realist definitely took advantage of this golden opportunity. During this time period, the huge problem that was surfacing was select groups of people were treated very indifferent. Women had to be an addition to their husband’s beliefs and African Americans were treated as if they were a piece of cleaning equipment. In My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin both of these issues are discussed and both use literary techniques that make the audience feel sympathetic to their writing. One technique that Douglass and Chopin use is the use pathos, or the emotional appeal. Another technique that Frederick Douglass uses is his Personal Anecdotes and experiences.
The first mention of slavery in the Bible is found in Noah's declaration, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers" (Gen. 9:25). He said this after waking up from a naked, drunken stupor and learning that his son Ham had mocked him. Although Ham was the guilty party, Noah's statement was directed at Ham's youngest son Canaan. So many people wanted slaves, especially in the South. They had more farms than they could handle on their own. Northern owners wanted them because they would have to do less work. Very few owners treated their slaves nicely and paid them to do work around the house. They would not be treated like family but would get treated a whole lot better than your “typical slave.” Those kinds of circumstances occurred more in the Northern states than the Southern states.
