In Sex and Violence:The Hard Core of Fairy Tales, a small section from the book The classic fairy tales, Maria Tatar delivers a very etail criticism of the Brothers Grimm. She states the reasons why she believes Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm chose to incorporate violence, but made the conscious decision to remove all sexual content in their versions of short stories. As a result, this is way that children tales are developed in today's’ society, which devoid sexual ideas that others believe are not appropriate for children. Tatar begins her argument by claiming that fairy tales were already violent before Wilhelm and Jacob edited them. She then goes in depth to talk about the fairy tales in Nursery and Household Tales, where she says that the brothers …show more content…

She gives examples of how stories were extremely violent before any alterations from the Grimms brothers. She talks about fairy and how “In "The Robber Bridegroom," a young woman watches in horror as her betrothed and his accomplices drag a girl into their headquarters, tear off her clothes, place her on a table, hack her body to pieces, and sprinkle them with salt. She says that in fairy tales almost every character is capable of cruel behavior, and this aligns with her argument that the portions of these tales were originally very violent and the readers were responsible of making sense of what happened during. However, the Gimms took away this aspect by removing and avoiding all sexual connotations dealing with premarital pregnancy and sex. Tatar goes on to explain that some of the reasons for the Grimms not implementing the sexually explicit ideas were because of financial problems.
