For some reason phoenix doesn't respond to her . Phoenix has lost her train of thought and comes to her senses finally realizing that the nurse is talking to her and she then starts to answers the nurse's question about her grandson .The nurse then gives phoenix the medicine for her grandson who has a throat injury due from swallowing lye and explaining to the nurse that he is not dead . Phoenix might be old but she is a strong loving and heart filled grandmother who would do anything to make sure her grandson is safe and okay and taken care of
In the short story, “ A Worn Path “ written by Eudora Welty it can be interpreted that Phoenix Jackson is suffering from dementia or some other form of mental illness, and that her grandson that she so lovingly speaks of has been deceased for some time.
Next, Phoenix Jackson endures successive complications, each more difficult than the one before. Firstly, the sun is scorching, and she has to go through a very thorny bush. Further, ahead, she has to climb through a barbed wire fence, which could
Phoenix Jackson and The Young Man embarked on their journeys for different reasons. Phoenix’s journey was a necessary journey; her grandson needed the medicine in order to be healthy. She took the journey because of her sense of responsibility and love for her grandson. Like any grandmother,
Phoenix Jackson is an elderly, African American women who makes her way to town to pick up medicine for her grandson. Along the way, she encounters difficulties that she overcomes in order to reach her destination. Welty uses the south’s view of African Americans to inspire Jackson’s journey. She meets up with a young, white man who is hunting while walking through the woods. He condescends her because of her old age and the color of her skin. He even, at one point, aims his gun at her as a joke. She never falters, and even ends up stealing a nickel from him. Also, when she enters the clinic where she needs to pick up the medicine, the receptionist thinks she is merely lost and unintelligent. She talks to Jackson as if she is less than her until a nurse, who knows Jackson, steps in. These things are southern aspects that can only be so accurately depicted if the writer is a southerner
Not only is Phoenix selflessness she has endurance, in the article “A Worn Path” Analysis at Yahoo Inc. it explains that “she falls, gets back up and keeps on toward the goal of getting her grandson’ medicine”, even though she could have gotten killed she knew that her grandson needed her and she was the only one that could care for him. Nothing was going to stop her from getting to where she was going.
They both had a different financial status and family upbringing but there mental state is the same. In A Worn Path, Phoenix was faced with several problems but she still managed to get the medicine for her grandchild no matter problems she faced along the way.
Just like Phoenix Jackson, this story’s main character, most people find their way through challenges, time after time, because of their strong sense of determination.
Overall, Phoenix Jackson’s character adds to the story through her humble, maternal strength. Phoenix’s love for her grandchild brought her through many challenges, but year after year as she completes her trek, she keeps her grandson as her top priority. This overwhelming level of determination allows her to keep hold of her most valuable possession. Through her actions she reveals to the reader that her humble, caring, determined nature allows her to overcome the odds and provide for her family as well as maintain a simple Southern elegance.
“A Worn Path” is a short story written by Eudora Welty. It is based on an elderly African-American grandmother named Phoenix Jackson, who goes for a walk to the town of Natchez on a cold December morning to get some medicine for her ailing grandson. This story speaks of the obstacles Phoenix endured along the way and how she overcame them. The theme, central idea or message that the author wishes to convey to his or her readers, in “A Worn Path” is one of determination. Phoenix Jackson is determined to get to Natchez, in order to get medicine for her grandson; she does not let any obstacles get in her way. The theme of determination is shown in many ways throughout this short story.
The determination that Phoenix Jackson had to take care of her suffering grandson was unbearable. Phoenix also goes through many bushes and vines with thorns. She risked her own life under many circumstances to save her grandson’s life. He must the play a great role in her life. “‘We is the only two left in the world.
Phoenix went all that way to help her young grandson by getting him medicine so that he could get better. She goes all out and sacrifices to save
A worn path with Phoenix Jackson gives a reader many mind bobbles, but there is one mind bobble that my mind has been stuck on. Phoenix goes to town to get medicine for her grandson that we do not know is dead or alive. I think he is dead, only because there are strong hints that he is. The first hint is when the nurse ask Phoenix if the boy’s throat is getting better and she does not give a good response. Then the doctor gives her the medicine for free, probably because the boy is dead. She also gives a big hint when she says that he is wrapped up waiting on her with his mouth open. There is enough suspense given for me to believe the boy is dead.
As Old Phoenix started out as a person of power, she still continued to make an impact on others and the story on her journey. Old Phoenix’s grandson said
I think the trip to the city to get the medicine represents the mythological trip that the Phoenix takes to the sun to die. I say this because by going on this journey Phoenix is using the last of her energy and will probably die soon after it. On her way to the city Phoenix faces many obstacles. One obstacle she faces is old age “Seems like there is chains about my feet “ she says this because her old age has left her almost immobile. The first actual obstacle she comes across is the scarecrow who represents death or the grim reaper because he is described as wearing all black and is trying to get her to come with him. Another thing that links the scarecrow to death is the simple fact that he is in a field. The next obstacle is the white hunter who tells her to go back and represents evil forces ” Well, granny you must be a hundred years old and scared of nuthin I’d give you a dime if I had any money with me. But you take my advice and stay home, and nothing will happen to you”. He is lying about having no money so she steals a nickel from him, a trivial amount of money for him that won’t be missed so we the readers find ourselves justifying the theft.
Phoenix Jackson’s, in “A Worn Path,” physical limitations eluded to the difficulties she faces throughout her journey.
