This article, “Oceans of Pollution” is written by Dahr Jamail. He presents this article with many details to support his argument. Two main topics with support are used, which is how plastic is causing a great pollution affecting the fertility rates of the fish because fish can ingest tiny sizes of plastic therefore harming the creatures. As well, another topic in this article is the dead zone affecting the ocean, caused by natural environment, climate changing the temperature and human factors. This article mainly presents this article to the government to suggest for change and to humans, many who are biologists, who care about this huge problem. With the intensity of the ocean’s pollution, the article uses three rhetorical topics, pathos, …show more content…
For the audience or reader, what exerts emotions most is the pictures shown. The writer tries to bring the emotional side of readers to show how great of an issue plastics are, damaging the world and affecting humans. Not only do the pictures shown have to be useful, but the how the article writes the article as well. The quotes “Every tear you cry… ends up back in the ocean system…. Every second breath you take comes from the ocean produced by planktons” (para 5 of Intro) from Alanna Mitchell, and “The algae then die and sink to the bottom, where bacteria eat them and deplete the water of oxygen … so sea life suffocates and dies if it’s unable to swim away” (para 6 of Dead Zone) from Matt Rota, both show strong vivid description of the ocean and sea life. One way to improve the article is to change the tone, although many writings from the article are quotes from scientists and expertise, it uses supporting evidence only and from one point of view only, in a way to say it is human activity causing pollutions. However, pathos increases the quality greatly by adding emotional pictures for readers’ to know what is …show more content…
Ethos include how well the article is edited, who the author is and how the writer presents the article. Damhr Jamail is a journalist for this magazine Al Jazeera, which mainly reports news for the Middle East. Although this article does not include an editor’s name, however, the article is written well, and contains no grammatical errors. In the article, Jamail can improve his point of view easily by the uses of many quotes, sources and reference only to support his thoughts, he stands on one side but does not argue another side to the topic. As well, in many of the paragraphs, he include as the first sentence “The most obvious…” which is not professional enough for the article. The writer includes many quotes and references from professional scientist and researchers to strengthen credibility of the
Millions of tons of trash are dumped into the ocean each year (OI). Ocean pollution can be stopped! I am going to explain what people are doing to the ocean and how it can be stopped. First, two billion people within 30 mile of the coast create 100 million tons of trash every year (Doc. 1). This can be stopped if we reduce plastic in the waste stream, improve solid waste management, and increase, capture, and reuse more plastic (Doc. 1).
We all know that why oceans are important for us and why we need to take actions towards the preservation and keeping our oceans clean from plastic. In article “Our oceans are turning into plastic… are we?” Susan Casey has tried to inform the general audience about the problems caused by plastic in oceans. Susan Casey has strong credentials for writings this article because she already has wrote many works about the oceans and marine life such as The Devil's Teeth: A True Story of Obsession and Survival Among America's Great White Sharks. Furthermore she also worked in editorial tams of two movies Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm. So this shows that she is well experienced in writing works about oceans and marine life. Using her previous
In the article “Ocean of pollution,” the author, Dahr Jamail, makes a strong case for that fact that human activities drive oceans pollution in a terrible situation. He begins by briefly outlining how quickly plastic pollution in the oceans has increased in only few decades along with human behaviour. Dahr then continues on to describe the doubling “dead zones” appears unnaturally have impacts on sea life, even the food chain. The article concludes by stating the solution for the oceans pollution. Clearly, the audiences he spoken to are the North American public since it was originally published in the widely circulated Al Jazeera Magazine, but it also intended for the environmental organizations and governments (lots data from American government departments and list solution for EPA). In fact, for the most part with Dahr use of examples and pictures strengthens his logos. Also, he integrates pathos excellently due to appropriate images and tone. He utilizes Ethos well, for knowledgeable about the environment issues.
Imagine waking up with a brown fog in the air and your unnatural tasting drinking water is the only water you have. If ocean pollution continues, also known as marine pollution, continues this could become an everyday reality. This form of pollution is caused by dumping waste in the ocean, toxic chemicals, oil spills and a variety of other ways. Marine pollution is deadly for various reasons and has many negative affects, including its effect on human’s food supply, hurting our marine animals, and ruining our oceans quality. Every human, plant, and all living creatures depend on these bodies of water for air, water, food and many more. “The oceans are an important part of the
In the article “Oceans of Pollution,” published by Al Jazeera, Dahr Jamail discussed the impacts of pollution on the world’s oceans. He talked about the amount of plastic wastes produced by human and the increasing area of “dead zones.” He showed how seriously plastic debris and chemical fertilisers have affected the environment and how harmful they are to ecosystem. Jamail tried to warn general publics on the damages they have caused on the environment and hoped to gather people’s attention on pollution by writing this article. Jamail made a strong communication with the audience by using three rhetorical strategies, logos, pathos, and ethos, and his article clearly fulfilled his purpose.
The articles explained that ocean acidification has increased by 30% and could rise up to 70% if nothing is changed. Article 3 give examples of marine animals such as oysters that have shrunk from the acidic oceans and could no longer be cared for in the ocean, their home. Article 4 gave devastating statistics of 30 whales and 250,000 Pacific Salmon dying. With these appalling statistics and examples, people will feel some sympathy for the world that humans have been slowly destroying and will want to make a
Showing how ugly and cluttered it is and the animals that are affected by its look with that pollution on them. The pollution looks like waste dumps from the shore, and then into the deep once beautiful ocean it once was. The background music in the video gives an emotional vibe to it with the captions about pollution and how one can help with removing that pollution. Then also by adding to those watching not to add to the count of how much waste is put into the ocean. The video is emotional for those who care about the oceans problems and those marine mammals that live in it and what will happen to them if this
Everything on earth has a purpose. Like the ocean. The ocean provides more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere. It is also 97 percent of the Earth’s water. Everything that you wear, eat, and drink happened because of the water provided from the ocean. No matter what it’s hard to live without the ocean. Now what would happen if the ocean was polluted? The seafood that we eat would get infected so we will be eating infected fish, our water would be contaminated and our body can become infected , and we can possibly die from it.
Ocean pollution is one of the biggest global killers. 5,000 people die each day because of dirty water. This is due to heavy reliance on plastics. Ocean pollution is when harmful chemicals or objects get into the ocean and contaminates it. There’s many different types of ocean pollution. For example, there’s oil, dumping, sewage, air pollution, and agricultural run off. In this essay, we’re going to be focusing on sewage pollution. Sewage pollution is animal waste and human wastewater that is washed into the ocean.
The second article “When The Mermaids Cry: The Great Plastic Tide” was written by Claire Le Guern Lytle. To begin, the differences between the two types of pollution will be discussed.
About 75% of the Earth’s surface is water. The oceans are home to many animals like dolphins, sharks, jellyfish and much more. However, due to the pollution, the sea life is suffering. Ocean, marine, pollution is “the spreading of harmful substances such as oil, plastic, industrial and agricultural waste and chemical particles into the ocean” (Rinkesh 1). The pollution in our oceans is increasing every day; Therefore, it is important we take control and decrease the pollution in the water.
As the world develops and the human population grows there is more pollution being dumped into the oceans, causing major problems to marine life and ecosystems. Major causes of marine pollution involve non-point pollutants, marine garbage, toxic ocean pollutants and sewage disposal in oceans. From heavy metal poisoning including lead and mercury killing predators such as sharks and whales, to waste getting trapped in the digestive tracts of marine animals, this essay focuses on how human interference causes horrifying problems to the marine life, but also how to fix it. It will also explore the normal activities of people including farming and how this can cause an imbalance in an ecosystem. Everyday activities can cause massive nutrient
One of the most expansive and diverse places on the Earth is dying at the hands of humans. Fossil fuels, fertilizers, and energy plants are releasing chemicals into the environment harming oceans. The ocean's ecosystem can not handle the extensive impact of today’s agriculture. The acidity of the ocean continues to increase, making the ocean’s ecosystem unstable for marine life. In order to restore oceans back to their original state, the government needs to adopt policies to help oceans face today’s agriculture.
The ocean is an important part of the earth, and oceans account for 70% of the Earth’s surface area. However, the ocean pollution has some negative effects on our lives. For example, ocean pollution kills the marine organisms and even changes the weather. Ocean pollution affects many aspects, and this research paper will talk about the effects on economy. In general, the ocean pollution has the negative effects on tourism, fishery and human health.
One of our biggest environmental threats is water pollution. Not only does it affect our ecosystem, but it also harms us. Water pollution is a very vast topic with many components. One of the ways we are personally affected is by the fish, they eat bits of plastic thinking its food and then we eat the fish. This can be very harmful to us and it’s happening globally, “it was reported that plastic was found in a third of UK-caught fish.”(Smillie)Unfortunately we are the reason
