Lyddie left her family behind with her brother Charlie. The both of them are out trying to help their family with money. Lyddie left her job to become a factory girl. Her friend Dina Goss is circulating a petition for better working conditions . Lyddie is confused about signing the petition or not. While some people believe that Lyddie should sign the petition for better working conditions, she shouldn't because she would make less money and she could lose a lot. If Lyddie were to sign the petition she would have multiple money problems. If Lyddie signed she could be blacklisted. ¨ No other corporation would hire you¨ (page 92). If she is blacklisted no one would want to hire her. With less hours comes less pay. ¨ But we'd be paid less¨ (page 91). Lyddie would be working less hours and she would make less product which she would have less pay. Lyddie could lose her home. ¨ We got to think about keeping this farm for when Papa comes back. We should take that money and bury it someplace, so when we get free we can come back …show more content…
Without a home where would she live. ¨They'd take July off, go back to the farm, the two of them, but it was a vain dream Lyddie knew there would be nothing to eat there¨ (page 140). If Lyddie signed she would have nothing to go back too. Without a job things can be pretty hard. ¨ I'm thinking of you. What will you do with no job? You'd be blacklisted¨ (92). ¨ No other corporation would hire you¨ (92). Singing the petition can lead to being blacklisted. Lyddie wouldn't have a job. Surviving is a big part in this too. ¨ There would be nothing to eat there. The cow was gone and no crops¨ (140). Lyddie couldn't survive without food and shelter. Lyddie can lose a lot if she signed the
Decisions are what direct a average person's life. Some decisions are easy some are hard. But that’s the way of life and how it works.
“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. I sat at a table where rich food and wine in abundance, an obsequious attendance, but sincerity and truth were not, and I went away hungry from the inhospitable board. The hospitality was as cold as the ices.
Lyddie has to make a decision but like other kinds decision hers is hard to make. In the book lyddie by Katherine paterson lyddie goes to find a job at the lowell mills and she met a girl Diane and Diane wants her to sign the petition. While there are reasons lyddie should sign the petition, there are more reasons why lyddie should not sign the petition. One reason lyddie should not sign the petition is that she could get blacklisted. The text states ¨We got to think About keeping the farm for When papa comes back.
Decisions are the hardest thing to do especially when they leave and effect on other people. The fictional novel Lyddie by Katherine Patterson is a story where this 13 year old girl named Lyddie was the boss of her house and her mom sent her away to the mill to help pay off the debts, she goes but at first she doesn't like it there , Lyddie meats a girl named Tripfiena and Lyddie she works there at the mill but she's not making enough money so she decided to move to lowl to be a factory girl she makes friends and the working conditions are bad and one of the supervisors makes her feel uncomfortable and now she is thinking about signing the petition about the working conditions and most of the time you will get fired if you sign it. While some people believe that Lyddie should not sign the petition because conditions and getting sick because of the machines and Mr.
Some decisions can be easy, some decisions can be tough. In the Novel Lyddie, by Katherine Patterson Lyddie has to make a decision to sign the petition or is she isn’t going to sign the petition. Lyddie is working at Lowell, Massachusetts trying to make money to pay off the debt for her house in Vermont. While there are reasons Lyddie should sign the petition , there are more reasons why she should not sign the petition. Lyddie should not sign the petition because she need money to pay off the debt. Also, she wants Rachel to go to school so if she to that to happen…
When you have a decision to make and there is consequent with both it can be hard to chooses. In the book Lyddie, by Katherine Paterson a girl named Lyddie moved from Vermont to work in a factory to make money for her family. When she is working in the factory good and bad things happen. So bad that she is thinking about signing a petition. While some people believe that she should sign the petition because she could get less hours of work at the factory.
Fewer hours would be good for Lyddie so the conditions of the environment won’t get her bad enough to make her sick again. In the text, it states, “Now that she thought of it, she could hardly breathe, the air was so laden with moisture and debris… she had to get air, but the window was nailed shut against the April morning. She leaned her forehead against it, even the glass seemed hot… She coughed trying to free her throat and lungs for breath.” This just shows how much pollution is in the air. Lyddie wasn’t even able to open the window to get a fresh breath of hair since it was nailed shut. Something needs to happen or the death count of factory workers will go higher. This environment is unsuitable at all for Lyddie, let alone the mill not being safe for the others. Lyddie’s environment is just terrible and it’s making everyone sick. Lyddie should sign the petition before bad things start happening. If this is going to be where Lyddie is going to work, they should at least make it safer. This is why we are going to talk about the other point, shortening amounts of hours Lyddie
Girls as young as 10 years old start working 13-14 hours a day for 6 days at the Lowell mill. The book “Lyddie” by Katherine Patterson conveys the struggles girls faced in the 1800s because of the working condition in the Lowell. The book revolves around the world of a 13 year old girl who is separated from her family so she can pay the debts and save their farm. Some people say Lyddie should not sign the petition because she needs to earn money for her family. Lyddie should sign the petition because the environment at the mill is not healthy nor is it safe and the corporation makes workers work hard for very less pay and wears them out.
At this point in the novel, Betsy gets sick from the filthy air in the boardinghouse and the amount of work she had to do in the mill. When Betsy was leaving, Lyddie thought, "She'll never be strong enough again to work in a mill thirteen, fourteen hours a day" (113). This shows that mill work takes strength and it's often dangerous for young girls to work 13 to 14 hours a day. Because of how tiring the work is, workers often get sick, like in this quote, Betsy gets sick and had to leave. If Lyddie signs the petition, and it becomes valid, then workers only have to work 10 hours a day. Therefore decreasing the possibility of them getting sick. All in all, Lyddie should sign the petition because 13-14 hours a day is too
Near the end of the 19th century, the United States went through a transformative period marked by the pursuit of “Manifest Destiny,” characterized by the United States ambition to become a global power. Not only with means of territorial expansion, but also to put themselves as the “saviors” of oppressed groups that searched for “enlightenment.” However, the truth was no more distant than what the United States promised. During this time, different voices were raised to challenge the idealized narrative of American pursuit of expansionism, unrevealing the dark reality of American expansionism. In document 1 “Tragedy of wounded knee” (1890), Red Cloud’s speech provides a critique of the treatment received by the US government toward the Native

make many decisions and if they choose wrong, it may cost them their lives or someone else’s in
There are a number of reasons how an issue of an individual’s capacity has an effect on them making an informed choice including: physical health, mental health, religion, social class, the law, financial support, family support. Even though the list is endless, it is dependent on the individual and their personal situation which will determine the choice they make. The issues which may occur for someone making a decision may influence how an individual makes an informed choice, a few examples are:
There is no doubt that in the majority of films directed by the renowned Alfred Hitchcock, women play a significant role. Many of Hitchcock’s films feature a blonde, rather than brunette, as the female lead because Hitchcock considered blondes “a symbol of the heroine” and “less suspicious than a brunette”. Hitchcock’s heroines are externally immaculate, but full of deceit and weakness. They have mother-like tendencies and are often portrayed as proper and obedient towards their male counterparts, as most women were expected to be in Hitchcock’s era. It is safe to presume that Hitchcock had severe mummy issues, which many of his films make apparent by severely punishing even the slightest of deceptions. The central dynamic in the majority of
In Lucy, Jamaica Kincaid explores the disillusionment faced by the eponymous character upon immigrating to the United States. The novel's style of narration allows Lucy’s thoughts and emotions to remain hidden. Despite this intense privacy, Lucy's disillusionment is clear. She had hoped that moving around the globe would solve her problems but she still struggles with homesickness and her relationship with her mother. Her move is disappointing. The erasure poem And Coldest also engages disillusionment. The poem suggests the speaker has become disillusioned by observing the world, and indicates their plan to be “shut tight.” The poem inspired me to consider the causes of Lucy’s disillusionment, and her failure to address her own emotions. As a recent immigrant, the causes of Lucy’s disillusionment are somewhat obvious. More enigmatic is her self-avoidant, “shut tight” attitude. In this paper, I argue that Lucy’s disillusionment causes her to avoid the discomfort that comes with self-reflection.
